South Africa One Hour Bird Watching

Amazing Nature Contest: Thematic Challenge - #2/1/22

Challenge with a twist, I have selected the hot day on 9th January 2022 to prepare photography of birds seen here in Southern Hemisphere.

Being only one hour in challenge we have Weaver birds and Ring-necked doves as frequent visitors daily, however the Pin-tailed whydah is here again this year chasing everyone from the bird feeder to ensure his ladies get preferential treatment, by order of this Cheeky small bird!

Doves-Weaver.png

Above: Cape Turtle-Dove (Streptopelia capicola) not a big dove with gray-brown "ringneck", pale belly with white tips or side of tails in flight, abundant species always around. Next is Southern Masked-Weaver (Ploceus velatus) red-eyed masked weaver another species regularly living around the home, daily sightings at the bird feeder, normally?.

One Hour Challenge

Starting at 09h45 I noticed the Lesser Striped Swallow (Cecropis abyssinica) sitting on the telephone lines, already too hot in the morning, Mums must have instructed them to rest here while going off finding food for the newly fledged little ones.

5181--SwallowsFeeding.JPG

Captured her arriving to feed, at one time five on the line waiting patiently for Mum's to arrive catching on wing and bringing directly in a matter of seconds the food is transferred.

At 09h50 White Eared Barbet (Stactolaema leucotis) visited to take in the sizzling views, a chocolate brown to brown medium sized bird with creamy white under parts, white flash behind the eye. Sitting on high to look for insects or fruits available to feed on.

5161-White-earedBarbet.JPG

Now 10h07 my trusty friends arrived Brown-hooded Kingfisher (Halcyon albiventris) a family frequently in the garden, I often see two to three at a time, Mum and little one waiting on a branch for food to arrive in the shade. Medium sized woodland dwelling kingfisher with distinct call when in a chatty mode.

To end off the day Cheeky over the rooftop still persistently chasing females at 17h00, he will only stop when the sun goes down, very active crazy little guy! Not part of the challenge, just a smile to watch his antics.... always a busy guy!

5211-Pint=tailedWhydah.JPG

At 17h05 he landed in front of us demanding 'his feeder' is for his females, yes he stands his ground. Pin-tailed whydah (Vidua macroura)

Love birdwatching with you. As strange as it sounds to have a hot January day, the birds are just as exotic for me. Especially the extreme tail on that one!

Challenge succeeded I would say!

Happy Saturday Joan!

Inch and a half of bird, with such big attitude he starts up in around September growing that tail which will give him bragging rights to the three or more in his harem till end of March or April.

Thanks for visiting and kind comment, so glad you enjoyed a little sizzling heat.

Warm regards and happy Saturday Zeke.

Such a pleasure to join in, hopefully I will learn to be on time more often 😉

Ironically I remember to support voting for contests then forget to join in!

The first bird is really nice. Especially its tail looks very nice. Its tail looks a lot like a fish's tail.

Lesser-striped swallow is a pretty little bird, not often one sees them sit like this! Heat has been strenuous even on our little feathered friends.

Spectacular images. Wow. Glad to see content from South Africa - aren’t our birds magnificent?
I’ve got an entire tribe of birds, which I’ve rescued from my cats. Pigeon (1), Mynas (2), parrot (1) and I had a “mossie” for 12 years (unfortunately my beauty passed, late last year)
I’ve also got a family of swallows living on my porch, under the eaves.
LOVE THE BIRDS
❤️💕❤️💕💕❤️❤️

Had some fun watching Pin-tail for past two years, have seen more variety arrive than we have had previously, yes they are all gorgeous!

My rescue mossie I hand reared, Raggity-Anne left and came back months later with her family following flew around the lounge and out again, so I think her descendants still live in our neck of the woods 😁

Now have a Hadada who teases the dog, fly hither and tither to get a little chase game going, it's a totally wild bird who just appears to get a kick out of teasing the dog.

Have an amazing weekend, Durban has been sweltering but then I believe the Cape and Jo'burg have too!

That does sound crazy. Haha 😆❤️
Actually, it’s been very cold all Summer in Joburg. Very strange weather!
Enjoy the ☀️ sun. ❤️💕❤️❤️

My sister up in Joburg mentioned some days the heat was extreme, but then we do feel the heat.

When the sun comes our I hide away 😌

That’s odd, wherever they are I want to go there. 😂 😝 LoL
If you look at this averaging website you’ll see that average temp is 19 degrees, with a max of 24
Many lows of 14 degrees, 22 rainy days in the month (Dec - Jan). In my book, that’s 🥶 cold. Brrrrr

Think it's the rain making slightly more humid up there, the heat affects her almost immediately with blistering hands, so she knows when it moves up a degree or two 😁.

Your Swallows look so much better than ours which are only dark gray and white, but most I love the Kingfisher in your post. This bird is lovely and looks so sweet to you - nice 🤩

Wishing you a nice and hopefully not too hot Sunday 🤗

Sunday was kind to us, were able to stretch the legs on the beach once again.

My little swallows are very pretty also make a soft cheeping when in flight, the kingfisher is part of the family checking on me daily 😆

Oh yes, you have said it in your post that the kingfisher is visiting you often :) Here they are very shy and I have seen only 2 or three in my entire life.

Nice, you have been on the beach again 🏖️ If you would have said it was too hot I might have sent a cool-down image like this one ;)

Oh that little one looks like a Willow tree at midday waiting for the sun to shine, snow is sending shivers down it's spine.

Snow always looks amazing especially if fresh with no footprints.

The sun was still behind the hill. I would have had to wait for about half an hour for it to shine, but I wanted to go home and I have no idea what tree it is 😀

Some places are less visited and this is private farmland. This cold be the reason why I never have seen any footprints there.

Looks good in front of all the spruce trees, almost standing guard protecting the little one from bad weather off the hill.

Set away from being trampled, a nice spot to enjoy sitting quietly before heading on home.

Have a wonderful Monday and new week ahead.

Good morning Joan,

yep, it's just like the baby of the family and the big brothers stand behind it 😀

It's a quiet area and there's not much traffic up there. I drive quite often over that pass, as you also can see in my Season Hunt post 😎

Wishing you also a wonderful Monday and week 🌞

Season hunt is always out of season here, snow on houses I think is your next one!

I will pretend to be on quiet spot sharing the cool snow with the baby tree, just big enough for me to sit under and no one will find me there....

Oh yes, snowy buildings are next and there's a crooked shed to the right of this little tree. You can move there if the weather is too bad 😉

Some days the garden is full with many coming to visit, after rains we normally see some different little ones emerge, live to keep a watch out for who comes and goes.
