Cosmic Creations: Hokusai's Masterpiece The Great Wave

This week's theme is art history. My entry for this week is inspired by the great artist Hokusai. He is known for his masterpiece The Great Wave off Kanagawa. I always see this painting especially in Japanese-themed places, also in clothing stores like Uniqlo, but never took the time or interest to know who is behind this great art. All I know is it has a distinct way of art style, somewhere from the old era of Japan.

Art Process

• I tried to copy exactly the wave on the painting and put Jijisaur on the frame. This idea is inspired by another art with Godzilla in it. I find it cool and funny at the same time. 😆 I manually drew those little waves as if fringes for the wave.

I got more interested in Hokusai when @jude.villarta insisted on watching the movie. I told her that I might waste their time if they rewatch with me. Hehehe. And then, I wonder if that movie is so great that watching it twice is worth the time. The movie is called Miss Hokusai. It centers on the story of Hokusai's daughter, Katsushika Oei. Though the movie is heavily fictionalized, it depicts Hokusai's art and the Edo era.

• There are some available color palettes already in hex code on the internet so it is easy for me to do the coloring. The main color is blue and I feel like this color is very refreshing to the eye, of course, in combination with the wave and Mount Fuji. I did not realize that Mt. Fuji was there until I watched the movie. I thought it was part of the wave, haha. 😆 I think the sky is a tainted paper (???), so I colored it like an off-beige color similar to the painting. And then, applied the color palette for Jijisaur.

Final Art

• Here, I added the froths on the tip of the wave's fringes. I used a glitter brush and customized the size and opacity. For the clouds, I used an airbrush with a lighter shade of brown.

Though art history is my least favorite form of art, I am slowly learning about it. 😆 Probably got traumatized with my high school history class, haha! I had fun doing this art, too much fun surprisingly finished it in one sitting because I like the artist who made this masterpiece. 😁
