There is no bigger picture, than the one faced in Threads (1984), a single film that blows up sky-high whatever expectations you had on it because it is really about something that no one is, a nuclear post-apocalypse. This film made me shiver in terror, coward in pain, and feel the lack of humanity that humans can do just to survive, all of this while still being just a drama film that is focused on a couple of newly-weds and their struggle to have their unborn child in the recently nuked Sheffield, ravaged in madness and pain, keep reading if you want to know why you should see it because it tells a tale of survival and the primal instinct of Love.

When we talk about nuclear apocalypse, we always see the same Madmax'ish scenario, a bunch of crazy wackos in an era where the order is non-existent and that is it, there are no in-betweens, everyone is either full cannibalistic crazy or the main character's future best friend that somehow is still human, and most of those keep the same line of "an adventure to win redemption of the main character", Threads do NOT do that, and that it is what it makes it so good.

Threads it's about being realistic, there is no grand leader, no big rebuilder of civilization, and not one single man or woman can truly influence a city enough to put it back together after a bloody nuke. For the real world, and one of Threads those acts are just foolish attempts at the hand of what is left of the ruling government after such a calamity, and take the most likely approach on how that would happen while playing its strings like no movie I have ever watched.

I just gotta love how things are shown to us, a fake documentary of a future that dint happened, yet is still likely to happen in this current time, if NATO and Russia keep playing the game they have going now in the current Ukrainian war, there are some possibilities of nuclear armageddon and that danger frightens me deeply.

But at the same time, it shows us something unique, the true heart of humanity, parenthood, and shows us bits and pieces of how far a mother would go just to provide a living to a daughter, and this is the real strength in this film, her mission of having her child and give her all the best she can is what drives her to survival, and is not the only one.

There are several parent/child relationships in this film, and all of them are deeply touching, some might be a bit stereotypical for both is time and ours, but they are still solid in performance because it is not about how a family should look in this film, but about how far are you as a survivor willing to go for your family, because a parent love is forever they keep it going non-stop, even if it means death to them. That is the true magic of this film, we see tender moments In harsh lives, and devastation non-stop, but we can see how much love there is with ease, from the couple hiding in damaged cars to the endless walk to find food.

Most of the violence in the said film is guttural, bloody, and painfully inhuman. This is where the film chills my bones and makes my blood icy, because it scares me to see how much people would go full insane in months for non-irradiated food, yet it also shows how would a headless government go back to existence and make order by flexing their biceps with force and bullets.

Those bullets are the thing that scares me the most because at the start they would be pointed at criminals and those that are too irradiated and will die anyway, in this case, is just to give them an easier death than one from radiation, but later on, it would be pointed at command and ready to go and end life on whoever the cop deemed "suspicious enough" and that approach is something I could see that happening in the hands of governments in countries like the USA, Germany, Russia, England, and China, all of them already have done so before, and with amazing ease to boot.

That is why I find the cover art I choose for this article both disturbing and beautifully ironic, the guy is holding an assault rifle, yet he is a transit warden, he just ain't qualified or trained to handle that said weapon. Yet he is the one alive and has to give the orders, create some sort of order, and he is getting by radio from "an authority" tips of what to do and how to help the people, those radio officers are also deeply unqualified to its job and unprepared to the disaster that now is the world they live in.

This said, the "skeletal government" that is working through radio, is just a backup plan of the "old government" of England, which is long dead, without a single survivor, meaning they are all that will ever be there for the people because there is no chain of command left, and therefore no one could issue order and peace across the country, just in small surviving regions like Sheffield.

Soon we find a major exodus of people going to the more warmed places of the country, running from the irradiated ones and trying to make a living as farmers, as most of the food left after the blast is damaged, while the law is upheld at gunpoint and all mistakes are deemed with a bullet, but what is left of the family, of the parents, sisters of the cute newly-weds?

Those members sometimes got lucky, other times not so much, but not all of the country was originally destroyed, because no government would strike everything, they just destroyed industrial areas and strategic resources, meaning that it was easy to see some still going cities that at the start received the wounded and cared from their radiation and wounds, allowing them to die (Radiation poisoning) or work at peace for their share of food.

We see with ease how they find a way to live among what is left of the world, their destroyed homes, and the ruins of modern civilization, and that is weird because we can see how new children are born, how sometimes they are healthy sometimes they aren't, radiation is something serious that should not be played with, not even on war, it must be avoided as much as possible.

With ease, I could say that this film is utterly devastating at an emotional level, but after a few days of aging, I understood the underlying struggle, the primal struggle for survival is the main character in the film, but you could see with ease how it evolved in my memory to a struggle of love over death, just as touching as movies like Grave of the Fireflies (1988) and When the Wind Blows (1986), but I find Threads to touch me in another level than none of those could, I cried with all of them but the only one that was a reminder of this possibility and imprinted a deep fear upon me, something that the others dint, I still shiver when I think of this film, is a deep horror that shows us the Threads that make us human, and hold down our communities and society.

I hope you loved this piece enough to see the film, it is harsh, strong but hopefully, the film allows us to save our hope of survival for mankind in these scenarios where most media tell us that all is lost, but it ain't true, humanity is not lost, the newlyweds are evidence of it, and that is the strong message behind the film, the struggle of love is real and that is what keeps this masterpiece together. Now if I may ask of you, how far would you go for the survival of your child?

No hay panorama más grande, que el que se afronta en Threads (1984), una película única que hace saltar por los aires cualquier expectativa que tuvieras sobre ella porque realmente trata de algo que nadie es, un post-apocalipsis nuclear. Esta película me hizo temblar de terror, acobardarme de dolor y sentir la falta de humanidad que puede hacer el ser humano sólo para sobrevivir, todo esto sin dejar de ser sólo una película de drama que se centra en una pareja de recién casados y su lucha por tener a su hijo no nacido en la recién nuclearizada Sheffield, asolada en la locura y el dolor, sigue leyendo si quieres saber por qué deberías verla porque cuenta una historia de supervivencia y del instinto primario del Amor.

Cuando hablamos de apocalipsis nucleares, siempre vemos el mismo escenario tipo Madmax, un grupo de locos en una época en la que el orden es inexistente y ya está, no hay intermedios, todo el mundo es o un loco caníbal o el futuro mejor amigo del protagonista que de alguna manera sigue siendo humano, y la mayoría de esas mantienen la misma línea de "una aventura para conseguir la redención del protagonista", Threads NO hace eso, y eso es lo que la hace tan buena.

En Threads se trata de ser realista, no hay un gran líder, no hay un gran reconstructor de la civilización, y no hay un solo hombre o mujer que pueda realmente influir en una ciudad lo suficiente como para recomponerla después de una maldita bomba nuclear. Para el mundo real, y uno de Hilos esos actos son sólo intentos tontos de la mano de lo que queda del gobierno después de tal calamidad, y toman el enfoque más probable sobre cómo sucedería mientras jalan sus hilos como ninguna película que haya visto.

Me encanta como se nos muestran las cosas, un falso documental de un futuro que no ha sucedido, pero que aún es probable que suceda en este tiempo actual, si la OTAN y Rusia siguen jugando el juego que tienen ahora en la actual guerra de Ucrania, hay algunas posibilidades de armagedón nuclear y ese peligro me asusta profundamente.

Pero al mismo tiempo, nos muestra algo único, el verdadero corazón de la humanidad, la paternidad, y nos muestra trozos de lo lejos que llegaría una madre sólo para proporcionar un sustento a una hija, y ésta es la verdadera fuerza en esta película, su misión de tener a su hija y darle todo lo mejor que pueda es lo que la impulsa a sobrevivir, y no es la única.

Hay varias relaciones entre padres e hijos en esta película, y todas ellas son profundamente conmovedoras, algunas pueden ser un poco estereotipadas para su época y la nuestra, pero siguen siendo sólidas en su interpretación porque no se trata de cómo debe ser una familia en esta película, sino de hasta dónde estás dispuesto a llegar como superviviente por tu familia, porque el amor de un padre es para siempre y lo mantienen sin parar, incluso si significa la muerte para ellos. Esa es la verdadera magia de esta película, vemos momentos tiernos en vidas duras, y devastación sin parar, pero podemos ver cuánto amor hay con facilidad, desde la pareja que se esconde en coches dañados hasta la interminable caminata para encontrar comida.

La mayor parte de la violencia en dicha película es gutural, sangrienta y dolorosamente inhumana. Aquí es donde la película me hiela los huesos y me hiela la sangre, porque me asusta ver hasta qué punto la gente se volvería completamente loca en meses por alimentos no irradiados, aunque también muestra cómo un gobierno sin cabeza volvería a existir y a poner orden flexionando sus bíceps con la fuerza y las balas.

Esas balas son lo que más me asusta porque al principio estarían apuntando a los criminales y a los que están demasiado irradiados y morirán de todas formas, en este caso, es sólo para darles una muerte más fácil que una por radiación, pero más adelante, estaría apuntando al mando y listo para ir a acabar con la vida de quien el policía considere "lo suficientemente sospechoso" y ese enfoque es algo que podría ver que ocurre en manos de los gobiernos de países como Estados Unidos, Alemania, Rusia, Inglaterra y China, todos ellos ya lo han hecho antes, y con una facilidad asombrosa además.

Es por eso que encuentro el arte de la portada que elegí para este artículo a la vez inquietante y hermosamente irónico, el tipo está sosteniendo un rifle de asalto, sin embargo es un guardia de tránsito, simplemente no está calificado o entrenado para manejar dicha arma. Sin embargo, él es el que está vivo y tiene que dar las órdenes, crear algún tipo de orden, y está recibiendo por radio de "una autoridad" consejos de qué hacer y cómo ayudar a la gente, esos oficiales de radio son también profundamente no calificados para su trabajo y sin preparación para el desastre que ahora es el mundo en que viven.

Dicho esto, el "gobierno esquelético" que está trabajando a través de la radio, es sólo un plan de respaldo del "viejo gobierno" de Inglaterra, que está muerto desde hace mucho tiempo, sin un solo sobreviviente, lo que significa que son todo lo que siempre estará allí para la gente porque no hay ninguna cadena de mando a la izquierda, y por lo tanto nadie podría emitir el orden y la paz en todo el país, sólo en pequeñas regiones sobrevivientes como Sheffield.

Pronto nos encontramos con un gran éxodo de personas que se dirigen a los lugares más cálidos del país, huyendo de los irradiados y tratando de ganarse la vida como agricultores, ya que la mayoría de los alimentos que quedan tras la explosión están dañados, mientras la ley se mantiene a punta de pistola y todos los errores se juzgan con una bala, pero ¿Qué queda de la familia, de los padres, hermanas de los lindos recién casados?

Esos miembros a veces tuvieron suerte, otras veces no tanta, pero no todo el país fue destruido en un principio, porque ningún gobierno iba a golpear todo, solo destruyeron zonas industriales y recursos estratégicos, por lo que era fácil ver algunas ciudades aún en marcha que al principio recibían a los heridos y cuidaban de sus radiaciones y heridas, permitiéndoles morir (Envenenamiento por radiación) o trabajar en paz por su cuota de comida.

Vemos con facilidad como encuentran una forma de vivir entre lo que queda del mundo, sus casas destruidas y las ruinas de la civilización moderna, y eso es raro porque podemos ver como nacen nuevos niños, como a veces están sanos a veces no, la radiación es algo serio con lo que no se debe jugar, ni siquiera en la guerra, hay que evitarla al máximo.

Con facilidad, podría decir que esta película es totalmente devastadora a nivel emocional, pero después de unos días de envejecimiento, entendí la lucha subyacente, la lucha primigenia por la supervivencia es el personaje principal de la película, pero podría ver con facilidad cómo evolucionó en mi memoria a una lucha de amor sobre la muerte, tan conmovedora como La tumba de las luciérnagas (1988) y Cuando el viento sopla (1986), pero encuentro que Threads me tocó en otro nivel que ninguna de esas pudo, lloré con todas pero fue la única que mas que un recordatorio de esta posibilidad, me imprimió un profundo miedo y esto es algo que las otras no, todavía me estremezco cuando pienso en esta película, es un profundo horror que nos muestra los Hilos que nos hacen humanos, y que sostienen nuestras comunidades y sociedad.

Espero que les haya gustado esta pieza lo suficiente como para ver la película, es dura, fuerte pero con suerte, la película nos permite salvar nuestra esperanza de supervivencia para la humanidad en estos escenarios donde la mayoría de los medios de comunicación nos dicen que todo está perdido, pero no es cierto, la humanidad no está perdida, los recién casados son prueba de ello, y ese es el fuerte mensaje detrás de la película, la lucha del amor es real y eso es lo que mantiene esta obra maestra.
