Hace un par de días mi ciudad estuvo en su aniversario número 471, y como parte de su celebración quisiera darme la oportunidad de reflexionar con la comunidad uno de los temas que me parecen más importante para el ser humano, como lo es la cultura y su relación con el individuo.

El punto a compartir es hasta qué punto uno debe aferrarse a la cultura que le vio nacer? Dónde y cuándo debemos comenzar un proceso de apertura a otras realidades culturales? Imponemos lo autóctono o simplemente lo proponemos?

Todos estos planteamientos me nacen de una reciente consideración sobre las diferencias existentes entre nacionalismo y patriotismo, pues mientras el primero a veces adquiere rasgos de violencia el segundo es más condescendiente con la realidad y avanza en la evangelización de lo autóctono de forma más apacible.

La solución de esto, como en todo, está en el equilibrio o justo medio, como dirían los sabios filósofos. Por ello, desde la realidad de la cultura de mi ciudad creo que lo que hay que considerar son a rasgos generales, un par de cosas:

Orgullo por lo nuestro

Barquisimeto es conocida a nivel nacional entre tantas cosas por el talento artístico-musical que ha aportado a la sociedad, es llamada de hecho la ciudad musical, donde resaltan géneros propios, como el tamunangue, aunque no solo este. Los crepúsculos son un fenómeno de la naturaleza que llaman mucho la atención y es también un signo característico de este lugar.

Imponentes construcciones, como el Obelisco, la Catedral, la flor de Venezuela, el manto de María, engalanan los espacios y embellecen de manera particular los rincones y diversos ambientes de nuestra localidad. Las personas en general son bastante agradables, nuestros modismos y entonación al hablar (Na'guara, va sie, etc.) no causan rechazo, sino todo lo contrario atraen a otros, tanto así que entre nosotros tenemos barquisimetanos y "barquisimetidos", esta es una manera que tenemos de decirles a los que sin pertenecer de manera autóctona a la ciudad, le han tomado un aprecio particular.

Esto y muchas otras cosas más son aspectos que nos deben hacer sentir orgullo por haber nacido y crecido en un espacio determinado del globo terráqueo, pues aunque existan cosas que no son buenas y otras que evidentemente pueden mejorar, muchas de las que hoy tenemos la conservamos con amor y pasión, llevándola a cualquier otro lugar donde vayamos como un signo que también caracteriza nuestro ser, pues la cultura en la cual nos hemos criado tiene influencia en la forma y manera que nos desenvolvemos y comprendemos la vida en general.

Apertura a la diversidad

El amor y orgullo por lo nuestro no debe llevarnos a despreciar lo de los demás. En nuestro país (Venezuela), por ejemplo, hay diversidad de culturas según las distintas ciudades, como buen ciudadano, compartimos en armonía con todas ellas, allí está la apertura de un auténtico patriotismo: hacemos resaltar lo propio, pero no nos cerramos a las bondades que podemos encontrar en otros senderos, más bien la asumimos y le damos nuestro sello.

Hace poco escuchaba un testimonio de una persona de Maracaibo que decía que nuestro Na'guara aunque está presente en otras partes del país, el de nosotros es inconfundible e inimitable. Interesante punto de vista para alguien que no es de nuestra ciudad, que me ayuda precisamente a ilustrar lo que en este punto quiero resaltar y es que el amor y orgullo por lo propio que nos lleva a pregonar las bondades de lo que es nuestro, no quiere decir que no reconozcamos lo que las otras culturas también tienen y pueden aportar, allí está la apertura.

A couple of days ago my city celebrated its 471st anniversary, and as part of its celebration I would like to take the opportunity to reflect with the community on one of the topics that I think is most important for the human being, such as culture and its relationship with the individual.

The point to share is up to what point should one cling to the culture that gave birth to him? Where and when should we begin a process of openness to other cultural realities? Do we impose the autochthonous or simply propose it?

All these questions arise from a recent consideration of the differences between nationalism and patriotism, because while the former sometimes acquires traits of violence, the latter is more condescending with reality and advances in the evangelization of the autochthonous in a more peaceful way.

The solution to this, as in everything else, lies in the balance or the right middle ground, as the wise philosophers would say. Therefore, from the reality of the culture of my city, I believe that what must be considered are, in general terms, a couple of things:

Pride for what is ours

Barquisimeto is known nationally among many things for the artistic-musical talent that has contributed to society, is called in fact the musical city, which highlights its own genres, such as tamunangue, but not only this. The twilight is a natural phenomenon that attracts a lot of attention and is also a characteristic sign of this place.

Imposing constructions, such as the Obelisk, the Cathedral, the flower of Venezuela, the mantle of Mary, adorn the spaces and embellish in a particular way the corners and diverse environments of our locality. People in general are quite nice, our idioms and intonation when speaking (Na'guara, va sie, etc.) do not cause rejection, but on the contrary attract others, so much so that among us we have barquisimetanos and "barquisimetidos", this is a way we have of saying to those who without belonging in an autochthonous way to the city, have taken a particular appreciation for it.

This and many other things more are aspects that should make us feel proud to have been born and raised in a certain space of the globe, because although there are things that are not good and others that obviously can be improved, many of what we have today we keep with love and passion, taking it to any other place where we go as a sign that also characterizes our being, because the culture in which we have grown up influences the way and manner in which we develop and understand life in general.

Openness to diversity

The love and pride for what is ours should not lead us to despise what belongs to others. In our country (Venezuela), for example, there is a diversity of cultures according to the different cities, as a good citizen, we share in harmony with all of them, there is the opening of an authentic patriotism: we highlight our own, but we do not close ourselves to the goodness that we can find in other paths, rather we assume it and give it our stamp.

Recently I was listening to a testimony of a person from Maracaibo who said that although our Na'guara is present in other parts of the country, ours is unmistakable and inimitable. Interesting point of view for someone who is not from our city, which helps me precisely to illustrate what I want to emphasize at this point and that is that the love and pride for what is ours that leads us to proclaim the benefits of what is ours, does not mean that we do not recognize what other cultures also have and can contribute, there is the opening.
