La comunidad de humanitas quiere a través de sus iniciativas y propuestas promover el pensamiento y el compartir de ideas y opiniones sobre la humanidad, desde diversas perspectivas y según los diferentes enfoques que puedan existir. Por eso, la iniciativa más reciente de la misma es sumamente interesante, ya que se nos invita a que compartamos nuestras reflexiones sobre el valor de la diversidad cultural, para lo cual parto de la convicción de que se trata de una gran riqueza, pues, es en las diferencias, no en la uniformidad donde está la belleza de las cosas. Por ello, puede causar mayor regocijo un jardín con diversas clases de flores que uno que solo albergue una sola.

De allí que podemos resaltar algunas de las formas en las cuales creemos que la diversidad cultural puede ayudar al desarrollo de nuestro ser personal. Recuerdo, por ejemplo cuando viajé a Brasil y pude experimentar por primera vez lo que significa interactuar con otra clase de cultura donde incluso algo tan esencial para la comunicación, como el idioma, es diferente. No obstante esta diferencia y otras más, también puedo dar testimonio que son más las cosas que nos unen que las que nos separan: la hospitalidad de los que nos recibieron puede ser un hecho a traer a colación.

De allí que pienso que una de las cosas más valiosas que de la diversidad aprendemos es que dentro del respeto de nuestras diferencias podamos tener la empatía de reconocer aún en sus propias expresiones culturales cosas que nos unen. Esto tiene muchísima aplicación al nivel de nuestro desarrollo personal, ya que en nuestras relaciones de unos con otros nos falta resaltar más aquello que puede ser puente de una mejor convivencia, nos quedamos más en lo negativo, en lo que diferimos, y no prestamos atención a aquellos detalles que nos pueden unir.

Uno de mis sueños es poder viajar a ciertos países solo por el placer de experimentar otro tipo de culturas, ya que considero que tenemos mucho que aprender los unos de los otros, y cuando esos otros son un conjunto social grande el aprendizaje se potencia. Cada cultura tiene cierta manera de ver las cosas, una cosmovisión particular, una manera de entender la vida, jerarquía de valores, prioridades diversas, pues bien, el aprender sobre estas cosas enriquece mucho al ser humano, abre su perspectiva del mundo y otorga herramientas para desenvolverse mejor en la vida personal y social.

Pongamos el ejemplo general del encuentro del mundo intelectual oriental y occidental, el primero más dado a la contemplación, mientras el segundo enfocado más en las cosas prácticas. ¿Cuál es mejor? Ninguno, ya que cada uno tiene sus propias características que más que contradecirse unas con otras, se complementan, lo cual creo que al final es al clave del encuentro entre diversas culturas, en efecto, es esto lo que en realidad ha llevado a la transformación positiva de las sociedades.

The humanitas community wants through its initiatives and proposals to promote thinking and the sharing of ideas and opinions about humanity, from different perspectives and according to the different approaches that may exist. For this reason, the most recent initiative of the same is extremely interesting, since we are invited to share our reflections on the value of cultural diversity, for which I start from the conviction that it is a great wealth, because it is in the differences, not in the uniformity where the beauty of things is. For this reason, a garden with different kinds of flowers can cause greater joy than a garden with only one kind of flower.

Hence, we can highlight some of the ways in which we believe that cultural diversity can help the development of our personal being. I remember, for example, when I traveled to Brazil and was able to experience for the first time what it means to interact with another kind of culture where even something as essential to communication as language is different. Notwithstanding this difference and others, I can also testify that there are more things that unite us than those that separate us: the hospitality of those who received us can be a fact to bring up.

Hence I think that one of the most valuable things we learn from diversity is that while respecting our differences we can have the empathy to recognize even in their own cultural expressions things that unite us. This has a lot of application at the level of our personal development, since in our relationships with each other we lack to highlight more what can be a bridge to a better coexistence, we stay more in the negative, in what we differ, and we do not pay attention to those details that can unite us.

One of my dreams is to be able to travel to certain countries just for the pleasure of experiencing other cultures, because I believe that we have a lot to learn from each other, and when those others are a large social group, learning is enhanced. Each culture has a certain way of seeing things, a particular worldview, a way of understanding life, a hierarchy of values, different priorities, well, learning about these things enriches the human being, opens his perspective of the world and provides tools to perform better in personal and social life.

Let us take the general example of the meeting of the Eastern and Western intellectual world, the former more given to contemplation, while the latter is more focused on practical things. Which is better? Neither, since each has its own characteristics that rather than contradicting each other, complement each other, which I believe in the end is the key to the encounter between different cultures, in fact, this is what has actually led to the positive transformation of societies.
