My Son's Chicken Pox Scare
According to several people, chicken pox affects an individual once in a lifetime. However, I am not sure if this is true. Some people can experience a second outbreak of chicken pox.
My niece, nephew, and son also contracted chicken pox. It began with my sister's child, but we failed to notice it in time, and when we finally did, it had gotten so bad that my nephew became so ill. It was a good thing it happened during the holidays.
A parent at church brought her child infected with chicken pox, and it turned out that the virus quickly spread and infected all children in the children's department. All the children got infected. The church quickly closed the children's department. Everyone was advised to stay home and self-quarantine until the chicken pox virus could be contained. The church also provided support to the affected families.
First, I thought my son was immune and wouldn't get infected, but I was wrong. He became ill after the first day of resumption.
Since I didn't see any signs of chicken pox on his skin, I at first thought it was simply malaria. However, I went to a pharmacy to get him some drugs because his temperature was high.
When I got to the pharmacy, I explained to the pharmacist and asked my son to explain how he was feeling as well. After observing him, she prescribed an antibiotic and a malaria drug, and he started the dose that night.
Initially, I planned to still prepare my son for school the next day but had to change my mind due to what I experienced that night. At midnight, my son burned so hot that I had to get out of bed, get a towel, and place it on his forehead so that the temperature would be normal again.
The high temperature made me decide to let him rest at home so I could observe him while he took his drugs.
The next day, I saw that several chicken pox had appeared on his skin. I was worried and called the doctor. She gave me some medicine and told me to watch him closely. Thankfully, after my son finished the prescription of the medications, the chicken pox went away after a few days.
I still had to keep observing him until after that week had passed. The following week, he resumed school and felt much better. The malaria had been treated and the chicken pox had disappeared, but the scars were still there.
As I reflect on this, I am glad the chicken pox did not reach such a bad point that it disfigured his body. They only affected his head, and now they're almost gone. He's back to his normal self, and I'm relieved. It was a difficult time for everyone, but I'm glad we made it through. But my sister is still dealing with it, and I hope she gets better soon.
Interestingly, my neighbor's children who don't step out of their apartment also got infected, which caused me to think that the virus could be airborne. One needs to take extra precautions when they are outside.
