We live in the age of the self, where narcissism and lack of empathy are at an all-time high. Whether it's the myriad alternatives to a conversation, insecurity or the disproportionate attention some people receive on social networks, the problems of others don't tend to resonate with us.
However, this doesn't have to be a bad thing, quite the contrary. If everyone is immersed in their own world, developing a personality that is willing to listen to others can be the difference between a mediocre speaker and a charismatic person.
You see, I used to be a reserved and shy person (I'm still shy at times) who didn't dare to talk to other people, putting them on a pedestal. Then, when I went to college, I was forced to interact with others. How did I do it?
Well, I just applied two things:
- I started asking questions and letting others do the talking.
- I was sincerely interested in what they said.
In this way, I was able to make friends easily and in the course, venture to experiment with other social techniques.
I hope this post can open your eyes to the importance of listening to other people, something that will not only give you a better connection with the world, but also allow you to hear really interesting stories.
