Witnessing pineapple harvest on Sunday
September 04, 2022
A work can be done easily when a team is in unity.
It's Sunday! A family day, a rest day. This is the day where most employees have their rest day, but this morning when I opened the door, I was surprised to see workers in the pineapple field. It wasn't common to see workers in the field on Sundays.
When I saw them, they are still preparing for work, having their breakfast first and then wear their harvesting outfit.
When they started harvesting, I decided to bring my son nearer to them because he is so curious about it. He keep on asking how people harvest it and want to saw a lot of pineapples.
Our house is facing the pineapple field where it is around 15-20 meters away only. So, we just walk towards it and witnessed how the harvester harvested pineapples.
Look how they harvested it. They just pick pineapples, put it in one place temporarily and then they will pass usually two pineapples at a time until it will reach to the one side of the pineapple block.
I was amazed looking at them because they are good in throwing and catching pineapples.
They wear hats and jackets to protect them from the heat of the sun. They also wear thick pants or wear that white thick plastic pants to protect them from thorns of pineapple leaves. They also wear cotton and rubber gloves to protect their hands and easy grip of the pineapple.
Have you noticed someone who is ahead of them? As we walk along the block roads looking at them, I noticed one employee who is working alone. I told her, "Te, why you are alone?" She then said, I have to harvest pineapples in the first 2 or 3 rows before the team will put their harvested pineapples in these row. I then understand why is that so. In that particular row, the pineapples are being put for another worker to remove crowns of the pineapple.
Here are the harvested pineapples with crowns. Then, two members of the team were removing crowns. (I don't have a picture of them because they were shy and I have to respect them.)
These are pineapples without crown. They are in different sizes and colors because they are harvested for operation and processing for pineapple juices.
I saw a woman standing along the block road monitoring the workers. I went to her and asked if she is the team leader and she nodded.
I asked her why they are still working even on Sunday. She then said that the operation and processing needs more fruits for tomorrow. I also asked her that is it okay with them that they don't have rest day. She then said that they dont have work yesterday and it serves as their rest day.
I also found some defect in the fruits. That one in the picture above shows sunburn. Yes, even fruits are suffering from sunburn and its peel becomes brown and dry.
This is something unique because it has multiple crowns and some have more crowns than this but we can find few of them.
Wow! the fruit looks so sweet. This is a ripe pineapple.
This one is a giant pineapple bigger than the Mt. Matutum, oh I am just kidding.
This a pineapple field with Mt. Matutum as a background. The Matutum is so clear this time showing us its amazing beauty, an amazing nature.
This is a pineapple block road where the boom harvester and the bin truck can passed through. It's almost a week that the harvesting activity is going on here making grasses on this block road almost died.
Since we are here, we also had a walking exercise on the block road but my son loves to run as fast as he can leaving me in a distance.
After lunch, the bin truck came and they started carrying pineapples to the bin. Some were in the bin catching pineapples and one is receiving a big basket filled with pineapples. There are harvester below to throw pineapples to the catcher and others are putting pineapples in the basket and two of them are bringing it up to the bin alternately.
I was amazed how they work in unity. Each of them have different task and assignment to do and they are working through it accordingly. They have a specific goal or quota to reach which is to make a full load of the bin truck. Sometimes they can't reach the quota if the fruits are few and small. But there are also times that they could harvest more than of their goal. They were paid in daily rate basis.
That was a hand pick way of harvesting pineapples. The other way is to use boom truck where the harvester don't need to throw and catch pineapples because the boom truck have a part to carry pineapples up to the bin truck.
All photos are mine.

Yes, it works like that, I know it because in call centers also we used to have alternate off day and have to work on Sundays sometimes, depending on the rotation and schedule.
Thanks for dropping by to read my blog @rosecane. Yes it will depend in the situation what day is the rest day of an employee.

It's huge and amazing, I have never seen such a huge pineapple plantation.
The pineapples not only looking delicious but also beautiful too.
Thanks for the well comment @nightbird01. One of the biggest pineapple company is located here in our Municipality so a lot of pineapple field can be seen around.
That's great.
So I can say that you gets lots of fresh and juicy pineapple to enjoy.
I’m craving! Huhu I also want to try picking those juicy pineapples!😍
Just imagine you're eating pineapples this time. Thanks for dropping by @missellimac
The multiple crowns surely is a unique one! I wonder if they have bruises as they harvest these pineapples as the fruit has a lot of sharp edges.
Yes @cthings they are unique. Harvester don't have bruises because they wear plastic pants or thick pants and jacket to protect themselves from thorns of pineapple leaves.
I see. They're also experienced with what they do that's why I think they seldom get bruises. From a city girl's point of view, this one's new to me.
Hopefully i can share more about countryside life even our place is almost same as the city because it is already populated.
I suddenly miss eating pineapples. My father planted pineapples at the farm when we were kids for our consumption only. Now, I can only eat when I would buy from the market.
Really sis @murakaamiiii? Galing naman ng papa mo. Kami dati nagtry magtanim peru di namunga hehehe.. Pumayat lang ng pumayat hehehe
Ginagmay rapid sis oy. Para amo ra na consumption. Di pareha ana na lawd lawd jod
I love pinapples! 🍍🍍🍍 Thank you for including us in your walk, Ate. I never have been in a pineapple farm before but we have a lot of pineapples planted at home.
At least you have pineapples in your home kami kasi katabi na ng bahay ang pineapple field. Welcome and thanks for dropping by @ayane-chan
Wow, this is a very big pineapple farm.
I really like pineapple especially the one called Queen pineapple because they are sweet. The others taste sour in my mouth.
It was really a bountiful harvest
Yes some pineapples are sweet others are sour it will depend on their variety. Here in our area there are two common variety. They were called MG2 and F200 pineapples.
wow!! interesting, this is the first time I am witnessing something like this, its nice of you to have share something like this with us.
I am happy to share it with you @negro-girl and to all hivers who will happen to open and read this humble blog of mine. Hopefully many can see this pineapple harvest through this writing. Thanks for reading.
I absolutely love pineapples but would imagine you'd have to wear gloves when harvesting pineapples or you'll get shredded by the little thorns. I love tinned pineapple pieces but love it fresh too, it's great in salads and on pizza.
Yes that's right @emma-h. We used to mix slices of pineapples in cucumber and apple as salad.
It's seems so hard wearing those stuff for me but the harvester are used to it and they really need it.
Dami pla pinya sa inyo sis.. Pahingi haha..
Dami talaga sis peru di naman amin hahaha. While walking in there may lumapit nanghingi sa harvester, pinasa sa guard and the guard answered, we are not authorized to give mam hehehe so u turn na lang ang naghingi and the guard told me, mahirap mapicturan mam kawawa ang guard.
Haha..pero mas mura jan db?
Yes medyo mura compared sa ibang lugar specially sa Manila..
Wowww. Ang sarap nmn nyan sis
Yes sis nakatry kana ng pineapple from DOLE? Some of them dito galing.
Glad you brought this on our table...I haven't seen pineapple 🍍 plantation before 😂

I am happy that many of you becomes happy with this blog. It was a plenty harvest because its time to harvest those pineapples and it will take two to three weeks before this area will be done on harvest. Thanks for dropping by @nkemakonam89
This is fascinating ♥️ I always thought that they grew on trees!

Thanks for the support @wrestlingdesires.
Really? you thought pineapples came from a tree? Every one pineapple plant have only one pineapple fruit too. If we have planted 10 pineapples we can expect 10 fruits too and no more than that.
If someone will pick its fruits before the harvest time for sure you will have a lesser harvest.
Oh, then it's like a field of corn. I'm not sure why I was thinking trees 🤣

Looks great!
I never harvesting any fruits @jenthoughts
Me too. I have a new respect for pineapple harvesters after reading your wonderful post and seeing photographs of the hard work the workers do @jenthoughts
From harvesting to crown cutting, to forming a human assembly line and manually toss the pineapples from the ground to the final destination in the bin truck is no small feat...

Thank you for that realization @ninahaskin. As I looked at them, I was thinking and hoping that their family would spend the money earned by their parents wisely. They must know how tiring the work of their parents under the scorching heat of the sun and sometimes rain.
