Tuesday, March 8 is International Women's Day. This is a day where all women are celebrated. Is there any woman in your life whom you admire or feel impacted you; or any woman in general you feel contributed to the advancement of women? Give us two reasons why. The contribution to women can be either local or worldwide.

There are many women throughout history who have fought for our rights and thanks to them we enjoy much more freedom today. Although even today we must continue to teach that both men and women deserve equal treatment. But my total admiration is not for a woman who only thought about our rights, but also about the rights of other species. I am referring to the American zoologist "Dian Fossey".

As a child she suffered the injustices of life, her stepfather psychologically abused her and with a totally absent mother she moved on. He decided to go to Africa where he began to study mountain gorillas. Thanks to her, it was possible to demystify the violent behavior of the gorillas that was believed in those years and of course recover the population of these giants.

Well I know she did nothing according to many for the advancement of women in particular. But for me feminism is not only about creating awareness and words around women. It is also about living as a fighter and possessing a strong temperament to withstand life's onslaughts. Fossey faced a society that forced her to be someone she didn't want to be. She made many enemies protecting the gorillas, including poachers, western tourists and the Rwandan government itself.

What contribution did she make? / ¿Qué contribución hizo?
She is known throughout the world as one of the three pioneering scientists in the study of great apes. Only Fossey was placed in a more hostile habitat. So friends, imagine being a woman in the middle of the jungle trying to raise awareness about animals, when not even human life was worth in those places. So much commotion was created around her figure that she was murdered in 1985 with a machete. She was never intimidated, so the cowards had to silence her. It was also never known who really killed her, but it is believed to have been hunters with the support of the Rwandan government. Just thinking that she suffered so much from misunderstanding hurts me deeply, after her death it was exactly the same. He couldn't even do what he wanted with his money since he specified in his will that everything would go to the foundation. Therefore, the money would be used to finance patrols against hunting. But his mother, with whom he never had a good relationship in life, challenged the will and kept the money. An injustice to the memory of this great woman who lived to fight for the voiceless.

Perhaps you consider that this is not a valid publication for International Women's Day. But for me it is, and with it I give my eternal admiration to the brave woman who was Dian Fossey. But sadly, if she were still alive today, she would be very sad because all her work vanished. Today mountain gorillas are once again in danger of extinction.

This is an embroidery work created by my sister in memory of Dian and Digit.
He was her favorite gorilla, which created an emotional bond with the scientist. So much so that she allowed him to play with the babies in the group.
He was killed by the hunters in a gruesome way.
If only there was a place where their souls could be reunited.

Hello @jcchelme. You have an interesting article about an extraordinary woman. Yes, animal protection is important. Her studies could have been extremely valuable had it not been destroyed. Why it happened and in what manner is still, to this day, under scrutiny.

I wanted to bring something to your attention:

  1. When writing a research article, always include the direct source of the information. If you retrieved information and facts from National Geographic, including the author and any other information about the research, at the end of your article or in your footer.

  2. As pointed out in the contest post, the correct way to source images and other information is to provide a direct link. You indicate the source of your images as google. Check out the contest post for the correct way to source.

Thanks so much for highlighting Dian Fossey and her important work with the gorillas. She suffered greatly trying to accomplish that which she loved.

Take care.

Hello, the truth is that what I wrote is part of my own knowledge. Since I like her work since I was a child, I always read and watched documentaries about her. I didn't do any research other than remember everything I learned from years ago. But I focus on the most emotional part and how I see her.

About the link to the photos if I'm wrong and I apologize. I have already put the actual source as it should be, hopefully I can enter the contest.

I think she is a wonderful choice! It is too bad that all of her efforts have so carelessly been destroyed.

Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day!
