(ESP-ENG) Los esteroides - Hall of Shame [Opinión]
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
A few days ago and in the framework of the end of the Olympic Games I decided to talk about a topic which became very sensitive for the world sport as it was the doping of Russian athletes in several Olympics and winter games. I found it very interesting to the point that today I bring a complement but this time focused on the United States and great athletes who are known by most of us here. The use of steroids until just over 20 years ago was surprisingly normalized, that is to say, since there were not so many controls, it was easier for the athletes in question to decide to leave honesty behind.
This time we will focus on BALCO, a kind of laboratory, which was not, that was in charge of supplying substances and anabolic supplements to certain high performance athletes. Its creator Victor Conte was, or well is, the mastermind of everything, he was the guy who pulled the strings, who acted as a doctor, as an agent of the athletes, a swindler with all his letters. This story by the way is in a documentary on Netflix called: “Untold: Hall of Shame”. The really amazing thing about this are the athletes who were immersed in this scandal, we are talking about Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery and of course, the king of home runs, Barry Bonds.
Before this happened, there was already a precedent and that was Ben Johnson, that Canadian who was really a bullet on the track and who in Seoul 1988 had won gold in the 100 meters. His doping was discovered and he was stripped of his medal. Despite all this, these athletes decided to go ahead, the thing is that Conte had a substance that was untraceable (The Clear) and that combined with other substances was impossible to come out in urine tests. In addition to a body cream that had testosterone that what it did was to level the amounts in the body to make it even more complicated to discover. The truth is that what these people put together was an outrage.
Marion Jones was stripped of 5 Olympic medals and was imprisoned for a few months, and Tim Montgomery, also a very good sprinter, was stripped of all his marks, including a world record in the 100 meters, the mark had been 9.75. I was surprised by the testimony of the latter, words more words less, he said that he did not like to lose, he hated that people told him in his face that he had won and that he had a complex since his childhood because he was called “little Tim”. It is unbelievable that even the slightest trauma can trigger these attitudes of wanting to win no matter what, no matter the cost. Ethics do not exist for these people, in fact many of them do not regret what they did and even deny, today, having consumed any substance.
Barry Bonds' case was even more blatant because it was proven, there was evidence of that, that he had indeed tested positive several times and even today he denies it categorically. Those years when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa completely broke baseball marked him because he wanted to be better than them or prove that he could do it and he did it, 73 home runs in a season is something unheard of. In itself Bonds was a very complete athlete, to fall into substances just for wanting to be above others besides being disloyal is something that shows little respect for the sport. This documentary is very top because it helps to demystify these athletes, for me, beyond what they did before falling into this world, they will always be tainted, there can be no glory towards or for them.
I feel that this can be cause for debate, in fact the homerun mark was not taken away from him so I think the punishment for him is that he has not entered the Hall of Fame when he has all the numbers to do so. It must also be said that in those times few things and substances were regulated as they are today, hence all this remains as in a limbo that what it does is that the doubt is still there, in the documentary they explain it very well. Finally, I believe that beyond the substances, the real disgraces for the sport are the athletes who decide to tarnish everything for a little bit of fame; athletes, coaches, doctors, etc. No one can be exempt from blame when banned substances appear.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos leemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
