(ESP-ENG) Hablemos del 2024!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
With less than a week to go before the year 2024 is over, I think it would be a good idea to make a sort of compilation of those events that graced these 12 months. For me it was a great sporting year because we experienced many things, we had two international soccer tournaments, the Olympics, the retirement of sports legends of their respective disciplines, many movements in Formula 1, new records in the MLB, both sporting and monetary, etc., etc.. The year 2025 will be much calmer in terms of major competitions, but I have no doubt that we will continue to have great news to talk about. Let's see if I don't forget some of the things I had in mind and let's do the review.
In soccer, we saw how Argentina won the Copa America after beating Colombia 1-0, an event that left us with a postcard of Messi crying with joy on the bench waiting for the match to end. A Cup that also represented a “good” performance of the Vinotinto in American lands. In Europe, the Euro Cup was won by Spain with a 2-1 victory over England. Spain showed great dominance throughout the tournament and the consecration of Lamine Yamal as a young player and Rodri as the great mastermind of this team. And to stay on the soccer wave, Real Madrid won the fifteenth Champions League by defeating Borussia 2-0 with a goal by Vinicius, who was the star player.
We also saw some great retirements in sports, but personally I would like to highlight two in particular because they are the ones that will be most noticeable. Toni Kroos and Rafael Nadal hung up their boots and rackets respectively to put an end to more than successful careers. The first was a world champion, six times champion of the Champions League, champion in Spain and Germany; a guy who won everything but above all left a mark on the field that very few will be able to cover. And the second left with 22 Grand Slams, 14 of which are Roland Garros. One of the most competitive and toughest players I have ever seen in tennis, undoubtedly one of the best in history for everything he did on the court and for what he will continue to do off the court.
We lived a very particular Olympics in Paris with new sports that beyond leaving a good impression what they did was to be objects of endless memes. I think 19 world records were broken, at the level of spectacle if we must say that it was one of the best in a long time, the French both with the opening and the closing did quite well. I'll keep some moments. Djokovic's gold medal, a prize he was missing to consolidate himself as the best in history; the gold medal of surfer Gabriel Medina who made a performance almost 10 (9.9) and well, the breakdance of Rachael Gunn whose performance will remain for posterity.
I am not a diehard MLB follower even though I like baseball a lot but there were a couple of news that did reach me and I consider them very top. The first one is Shohei Ohtani's 50-50 mark, this Japanese who seems not to be from this planet achieved what nobody had ever achieved in history, 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. If we add to that that the Dodgers won the World Series against the Yankees, we must say that both his season as a player and as a team was really crazy. And finally to talk about a recent news and it is the astronomical contract, the largest ever given to a player in MLB in history, Juan Soto signed with the Mets for 15 years and a sum of 765 million dollars, coincidentally surpassing Ohtani's $700 MM last year for 10 years. A figure that will undoubtedly set a precedent in baseball, is it really worth it? - If they paid it, it is because they did.
And finally to talk a bit about F1, we saw Verstappen win his fourth consecutive title after a season of ups and downs, we witnessed the farewell of Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes after 11 years of marriage to move to Ferrari, his maximum “enemy” so to speak, and we saw other interesting moves such as the return of an Argentinean to the grid with Franco Colapinto for the end of the season. Surely things happened in basketball with the NBA but I hope you will excuse me, I don't like the sport so I don't handle it much either. If something is missing from the list, don't hesitate to let me know.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos leemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡Hugs to all, see you next time!
