(ESP-ENG) Cuckoo | A classic horror - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
The style of classic horror films, that which evokes the 80's, early 90's, for obvious reasons is being lost, we see less and less original films and more remakes, sequels or prequels trying to revive old glories and when they do not succeed, they have no choice but to make a horror/suspense based on AI. That's the scenario. Yesterday I sat down to watch Cuckoo, an unknown film, at least it was the first time I heard of it, but it conveyed, at least in style and appearance, to be one of those films loaded with clichés of those years. Was I wrong? - I would say no.
We have Gretchen (Hunter Schafer) who is on a trip with her father, stepmother and little sister; they decided to spend a few days in the German Alps since they got a job there. Upon arriving at the site they are greeted by a guest that the first impression that gives is of strangeness and absolute discomfort, is the owner of a hotel and some villas in the place. After a short time in that place Gretchen begins to realize that something is not right, there is a strange vibe in the atmosphere and in some of the people who live in that area of the mountains. It seems that in nature itself there is something dark and sinister lurking.
As the plot progresses little by little the picture begins to become clearer, Herr Konig (Dan Stevens), the owner of the resort, is not who he says he is; Gretchen's younger sister begins to suffer thanks to the influence of the place and Gretchen herself seems that something or someone is chasing her and will not rest until they catch her. The film is one of those films that are quite weird and bizarre which makes you curious and uncertain for some strange reason and you want to finish and get to the bottom of whatever it is that is going on. It's like a guilty pleasure, you know it's probably not as good a movie as you imagined but you still want to finish watching it.
Being a horror film I'm always going to measure horror, suspense, gore, etc. I think that by having such a weird vibe it meets the minimum dose of suspense, it's not scary by any means but it does keep you expectant in front of the screen. The real issue is that people have an aversion to the unknown, to what they don't see, so that's where the “appeal” of the film lies. The plot is not boring but it does have a lot of inconsistencies, script decisions that are obviously poorly made but still decide to go down that road just to feed the context of the scenes. This is very common in horror, sometimes it works out well, sometimes not so well.
Surprisingly it has its good scenes of terror and anguish, there are few but I consider that they comply. It is not clear the time but as I said at the beginning it has an aura of a classic horror film, both in cinematography, colors, setting and the general context of what the film is and what lies behind everything, that background that is the raison d'être of the plot is no longer so much in style today. There is not much gore or blood, the necessary. Maybe they could have taken a little more out of it, so sometimes it was a little short for me.
Hunter Schafer, this actress known for the series Euphoria, as well as almost all the actresses that came out of that series, are very good actresses. I don't think I had ever seen her in a horror role and I tell you she tackled it perfectly, the drama she injects along with the horror made me really enjoy watching her perform. Good performance. The rest are characters that accompany her, the real weight of the film is carried by Hunter on her shoulders. Maybe Dan Stevens deserves a mention, his character is very uncomfortable and enigmatic. He fulfills the objective of being hated, which I'm sure was his role.
One more movie in the pile, although I expected less. Weird, inexplicable things for me, a mix of fiction with body horror and that leaves many questions in the air but I think it's everyone's job to give it the answers they want. I give it a 5.5/10. There is good suspense and for a Sunday afternoon it is ideal. Here is the trailer. It lasts a little over an hour and a half.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.

I've never heard of it but it sounds like exactly the sort of thing that I would consider to be a guilty pleasure. I might not have known about this if not for you so I thank you for that.
