Cuando decidimos ver una película, del género que sea, por lo general nos enfocamos en las más mainstream, en los grandes títulos con los grandes nombres de actores y eso está bien y es completamente válido pero a veces es bueno darse un paseo por algunos títulos que no tienen ni un 5% de la publicidad que deberían y que terminan siendo unos films bastante buenos y decente. Azrael es una de esas coincidencias que me conseguí justamente buscando algo que ver. Un film de raíces estonias, completamente mudo y que tiene sobre sus hombros un terror, violencia y un gore bastante alto, mucho más del que me esperaba cosa que me sorprendió para bien.
When we decide to watch a movie, whatever genre it is, we usually focus on the mainstream ones, on the big titles with the big name actors and that's fine and completely valid but sometimes it's nice to take a walk through some titles that don't get 5% of the hype they should and end up being pretty good and decent films. Azrael is one of those coincidences that I came across just looking for something to watch. A film with Estonian roots, completely silent and with a lot of horror, violence and gore on its shoulders, much more than I expected, which surprised me for the better.
Nos ubicamos en las profundidades de un bosque de quien sabe donde pero que por el origen del film vamos a decir que de Estonia. Una joven logra escapar de una comunidad la cual la tenía recluida o en cautiverio, este grupo de personas es lo más parecido a un culto ya que todo parece indicar que le rinden plegarias a un mal antiguo, un demonio el cual tiene muchos años en dichas tierras. El objetivo que tenían con esta mujer era sacrificarla para así saciar un poco la sed de este ente (un demonio que no pida un sacrificio no es demonio) pero ella cansada de todo aquello decide huir y ahora está sola en la inmensidad de dicho bosque.
We are located in the depths of a forest of who knows where but by the origin of the film we will say that Estonia. A young woman manages to escape from a community which had her imprisoned or in captivity, this group of people is the closest thing to a cult as everything seems to indicate that they pray to an ancient evil, a demon which has many years in these lands. The goal they had with this woman was to sacrifice her to quench the thirst of this entity (a demon that does not ask for a sacrifice is not a demon) but she tired of all that decides to flee and is now alone in the vastness of the forest.
Lo interesante es que ella cree que está sola pero no, en los alrededores hay unas criaturas las cuales no me quedan claro que son pero pareciera una especie de demonios humanizados y que para variar están quemados que se alimentan de la sangre humana. Ellos controlan ese bosque por lo que nuestra Azrael tendrá que defenderse de ellos y de los miembros de esta comunidad que la están buscando para recapturarla. Esto es toda la película, una persecución constante, un juego de las escondidas que al final termina en una confrontación directa. Ahora, todo lo que pasa en el medio está lleno de una tensión muy afiliada, hay momentos en esa sensación traspasa la pantalla.
The interesting thing is that she thinks she is alone but no, in the surroundings there are some creatures which are not clear to me what they are but it seems a kind of humanized demons and for a change they are burned and feed on human blood. They control the forest so our Azrael will have to defend herself against them and the members of this community who are looking for her to recapture her. This is the whole movie, a constant chase, a game of hide and seek that in the end ends in a direct confrontation. Now, everything that happens in the middle is full of a very affiliated tension, there are moments when that feeling goes beyond the screen.
Como dije en el principio esto es una película en donde no se emite ni una sola palabra, esto es porque para esta gente la palabra es un pecado por lo que parece que no tienen lenguas o cuerdas vocales. Esto hace que la vibra sea un poco más desesperante, tener la capacidad de expresar y transmitir emociones solo con gestos y expresiones faciales es muy complicado y hace que la experiencia sea más angustiante. A pesar de esto la trama siempre está en movimiento, al no haber diálogos no hay tanta cabida para las pérdidas de tiempo. Personalmente nunca me aburrí, es un film muy completo en lo que a formas de morir se refiere, creo que buscaron compensar y así atraer más a las personas a que les llame la atención.
As I said in the beginning this is a movie where not a single word is uttered, this is because for these people speech is a sin so it seems they have no tongues or vocal cords. This makes the vibe a little more desperate, having the ability to express and convey emotions only with gestures and facial expressions is very complicated and makes the experience more distressing. Despite this the plot is always moving, as there is no dialogue there is not so much room for time wasting. Personally I never got bored, it is a very complete film as far as ways to die is concerned, I think they sought to compensate and thus attract more people to call their attention.
Visualmente está muy bien lograda, vuelvo a repetir, el gore es espectacular, las cantidades de sangre que se manejan son grandes, hay disparos, peleas y golpes, decapitaciones, desmembramientos y ver como estas criaturas devoran la carne directamente del cuerpo de las personas es un plus a considerar. Me gustaron algunas escenas, planos y aunque la locación siempre es la misma esos bosques para este tipo de films son perfectos, llenan de misterio e intriga a la historia. En el fondo hay una violencia enquistada que hace que estas personas actúen así, creo que la fe ciega y la devoción sin límites pueden ser muy peligrosas.
Visually it is very well done, I repeat, the gore is spectacular, the amounts of blood that are handled are great, there are shots, fights and blows, decapitations, dismemberments and see how these creatures devour the flesh directly from the body of people is a plus to consider. I liked some scenes, shots and although the location is always the same, those forests are perfect for this kind of films, they fill the story with mystery and intrigue. In the background there is an entrenched violence that makes these people act like this, I think blind faith and devotion without limits can be very dangerous.
En cuanto a los personajes pues hablar de la protagonista, Samara Weaving quien no es una novata en esto, ha aparecido en otras películas de terror y en varios títulos más. Para mi estuvo perfecta, el nivel de miedo, desesperación, venganza y resiliencia que le inyectó al personaje son épicos al punto que no hizo falta que dijera una palabra para entender por lo que estaba pasando y sintiendo. Los demás personajes son secundarios pero todos en la misma sintonía, siendo muy expresivos acorde a su papel en la trama.
As for the characters, let's talk about the main character, Samara Weaving who is not a rookie in this, she has appeared in other horror movies and in several other titles. For me she was perfect, the level of fear, desperation, revenge and resilience that she injected to the character are epic to the point that she didn't need to say a word to understand what she was going through and feeling. The other characters are secondary but all in the same tune, being very expressive according to their role in the plot.
Un film que sin ser muy conocido me sorprendió mucho, para mi una muy buena película de terror, con todos los elementos necesarios para que sea entretenida y digna de ver. Si te gusta el género y disfrutas que todo sea tan gráfico y explícito pues es para ti. Otra cosa buena es que dura menos de hora y media, 1:20 aproximadamente. Le doy un 7.5/10. A film that without being well known surprised me a lot, for me a very good horror film, with all the necessary elements to make it entertaining and worth seeing. If you like the genre and enjoy that everything is so graphic and explicit then it is for you. Another good thing is that it lasts less than an hour and a half, about 1:20. I give it a 7.5/10.
