(ESP-ENG) Woman of the Hour - Movie Review! [Spooky Season]
Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
The horror genre goes beyond slasher or supernatural plots (ghosts or demons), something that generates anxiety and uneasiness in people can be considered as something terrifying, which is why today's film is about something that can sincerely paralyze a person or a group of them: a serial killer. True crime always attracts attention because it is to enter the mind of a murderer and see how it is or was his modus operandi, depending on the actor, it can be really uncomfortable and even distressing. This story is based on true events, this guy is said to have murdered more than 130 people; what could be more macabre than this?.
As I already mentioned, this is the story of Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto), a serial killer who used the fact that he was a photographer (something that generated a lot of noise because he is also a photographer) to get close to his victims and abuse them and eventually murder them. The thing is that in those years the impunity was quite big, the police did little, I'm talking about the late 70's, so Rodney always moved very easily. On the other hand we have Cheryl Bradshaw (Anna Kendrick), an aspiring actress who was looking for roles and opportunities so her agent gets her a spot on a well-known national TV blind date show “The Dating Date”.

The point here is that the show was based on a bachelorette and three hopefuls, one of them being our killer Rodney. This man had a very “charming” personality, he always knew what to say so approaching women was easy for him, hence he got a good first impression from Cheryl. Soon she will realize everything and will live moments of great tension. It's a film where tension and uncertainty reigns to know what will be the next move of this guy, it's more what we don't see than what is shown on screen. Personally, it always kept me watching, you don't get bored or lose interest, true crime stories have a hook that makes people get really hooked.
The plot is presented to us by making several jumps in time to give us context of who this guy really is. Each jump is a victim and the film shows us how he went about gaining their trust and then doing what we all know. Despite the constant jumping around you don't get lost, far from it, what it does is make Rodney a bigger monster. It's never going to be the victims fault but, overconfidence towards a stranger can't be dangerous? - There are situations where one wonders how this woman can make a certain decision with a new acquaintance. Be that as it may, the story gradually sheds light on Rodney's true personality and yes, it is interesting to see how in a matter of minutes his look changed and he became a different person.
The director of this film is Anna Kendrick herself, making her debut in this role. As an actress here she does well, she is already very good at what she does so with this role there is not much to say. The only scene where a bit of drama and terror is required of her, she tackles it very well. The real star here is Daniel Zovatto. He has appeared in movies out there, no wonder the face looked familiar; the performance of this actor for me was very convincing, playing a person who existed and more if it was a serial killer must be complicated so even more so we must recognize the work he did. It is not for an Oscar obviously but it generates in the viewer what I'm sure he was asked for.
There is no blood or big scenes. Everything is very careful in the sense that they give you the brushstrokes so you can imagine what happens next, you will not see the complete and explicit violence towards the victims but just a little bit so that your imagination flies, I think this is very effective for this kind of stories. So well, it's a pretty good movie, I was surprised, I didn't have many expectations honestly. Psychopathy, trauma and evil at its finest is what this exudes. It's short, hour and a half only and it's on Netflix. I give it a 7.5/10, I think it's a good option to watch so I recommend it. I leave the trailer here.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
