(ESP-ENG) Una victoria "In Extremis" - [Opinión]
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
On Tuesday our national team won a match in which it had to get 3 points, no matter the way or the form, it was imperative to win against Peru in order to finish in the playoffs. Everything went “well” since Bolivia only drew with Uruguay, it would have been better to lose but it is well known that playing in El Alto is almost the same as cheating, it should be illegal to play matches there but that is another matter. La Vinotinto came with a catastrophic record, 9 matches, 9 defeats, the last one against Ecuador in a match to forget with a C team, because I don't even consider that lineup as a B team. Of course, this had a reason to be and that was to think about the Peruvians, to think and underestimate.
Something that is reproached to coach Batista is the lack of self-criticism in the face of the poor level of the national team, I think that in other circumstances and if it were another national team he would not be in charge but it is also true that leaving him at this point does not make sense, at least for me. The reality is that if Bocha is still in charge it is because of the complacent and benevolent nature of this playoff format that despite having 9 defeats we still have a mathematical chance of finishing in the playoffs. In fact, from now on, finishing in seventh place depends solely and exclusively on us, on no one else. So yes, with 4 dates left, 4 finals, the destiny of being closer to the World Cup is in our court.
But let's talk about Tuesday's match. The lineup presented by La Vinotinto was the gala one, there was no better one, the 11 top players were on the field, perhaps with Telasco Segovia as number 12. The country was sold the idea that this match was a “piece of cake” because we were playing at home, in Maturin, a stadium that has become a real fortress and amulet for the national team and because Peru's current situation is not the best (they have not scored any goals as visitors). There was talk that we could win with a difference of 2 to 3 goals. That was not the case. The first half of the team led by El Bocha I think was decent and good, they came out determined to get the result, I was surprised that he lined up with two strikers (Salomón and Josef) but that speaks of the urgency and need for the result.
That pressure from the national team led to the famous penalty kick to Martinez thanks to a great pass from Alexander Gonzalez. With the 1-0 scored by Salomón Rondón, the door was opened to that long-awaited victory. In the second half things changed a little. I don't know what happens with this team but almost always in the 45 minutes of the second half they lower their guard and performance. Segovia had to come in to give more mobility to the team, which was seen at times. The thing is that in general terms I give the team a 6/10. I highlight the work of the central defenders, they were very well positioned and compact and were the architects of Peru only kicking at goal once. The full backs, Aramburu and Alexander Gonzalez, also performed well. The defensive saga was the highlight.
Now, is this victory a reason for the euphoria we are experiencing? - I don't think so. It is true that the work was done, winning at home is mandatory, but the overall balance for me is still very poor. Venezuela has tons of things to improve and understand that it is urgent and necessary to beat Bolivia in June and Colombia in September. That match against the Bolivians will be the most important match in the recent history of the Vinotinto, considering that they are our direct rivals for that playoff spot. I am very pleased with the victory because it was necessary, but we have to keep our feet nailed to the ground and keep in mind that we have not won anything; it is time for humility.

Saludos!!
