(ESP-ENG) The Penguin | A real masterpiece - Miniserie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Danny DeVito from back in 1992 in “Batman Return” or Robin Lord Taylor from the series “Gotham” are some of the penguins I have seen on television or film, each with its essence and at different stages of the character but what we are seeing with Colin Farrell goes beyond. It's not only the adoption of the gestures, the speaking, the laughter, the personality but everything about the physicality, the deep transformation that comes with getting into the skin, literally, of this character is one of the most top and level things I've seen in cinema. When he appeared in Matt Reeves' Batman movie I was very surprised and when it was known that he was going to be a miniseries, from day one I knew it was going to be a great success.
I've always been much more of a fan of DC Comics characters, especially the villains, I feel they have much more depth and background than Marvel characters. But if we talk about the Batman universe the truth is that it is the pinnacle of stories. This penguin or as he is really called, Oswald Cobblepot, is a guy deeply dependent and attached to his mother, in this series he is portrayed as such, a guy who does everything for her, who has her on a pedestal but often is not equally reciprocated. This miniseries shows us the most mature stage of the character, where he concentrates more power, one that lies thanks to the Falcone and Maroni families, the great surnames that control Gotham.
Here we will see him do whatever it takes to rise in power, a power he seeks for self-improvement, to prove to himself that he is not a loser but most importantly, to let his mother know so that she will finally be proud of him. Their relationship is an important side of the story, in fact part of the ending has a lot to do with that. There is also another side to this series and that is Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), the daughter of the all-powerful Carmine Falcone. Her story is really fascinating, her passage through Arkham, her rise, the turbulent relationship with her father (clearly a constant in the plot), her own relationship with the penguin; it is an explosive mix of crime with trauma.
The miniseries itself is impressive, the level of quality is supreme, the stories are told in a very detailed way that add a lot of depth to the characters, knowing how they were in the past and what they lived helps us understand why they act the way they do in the present. This makes that there is an innate violence in the environment, the plot is raw, there is a lot of evil but not the one to go killing everyone for no reason, it is a more cold and calculated, which for me is the most dangerous. At times it can be graphic, yes there is a lot of shooting, fights, explosions but it is not the whole story even though the conflicts are over drugs, territory, gang control and money. It is a theme of pride.
This is one of the few series where I have absolutely nothing to say about the acting of the characters. Each and every one of them did an elite job as far as acting is concerned. If Colin Farrell doesn't sweep the next awards season it's because something terrible is going on in that industry. He injects a lot of class into the character, by far the best penguin I've seen. I also liked Cristin a lot, Sofia is a very dark character although she doesn't appear to be, she has suffered a lot in an unjustified way so that affects her mind a lot.
A great miniseries, a resounding 10. The set designs, photography, costumes, the plot and the way everything is told, the angles given to the stories, the cast chosen, overall performances; everything is accomplished. This is 8 chapters long and it's on Max. Not to be missed, whether you are a fan of the franchise or not, I highly recommend it.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
