(ESP-ENG) Monza, una decepción que se pudo prevenir // Monza, a disappointment that could have been avoided!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Weekend corresponding to the Italian Grand Prix at the Monza circuit, one of the most anticipated for all the history behind it and also because it was celebrating its anniversary, 75 years hosting great races in Formula One. So yes, it was a weekend of celebration so we were all anxious for the race because Monza, among other things, is one of the fastest circuits on the calendar so we were sure we were going to have action and if we consider how the points race is going we also knew that many things could happen, including what ended up happening, a totally unbeatable Max Verstappen consolidating at the top and almost caressing the championship.
If you saw the race you know what happened and the way it ended and if not, basically the last laps were given with a Safety Car and with it the end of the race. That a race ends with a SC is rare, the last precedent was in 2020 in Bahrain but these are things that should not happen, why not consider the red flags for the end of the awards so that they can finish in a more colorful and competitive way and thus at least give the opportunity to the drivers to climb positions for which they were fighting? - These are things that the FIA should review even though they say that they have turned off the rules. Maybe it is the regulation itself that needs to be changed.
Already in itself we had a prize that looked strange by the absurd amount of penalties that were going to be for the race, nine drivers were affected by the change of some of the parts of their cars which makes the starting grid is altered. The thing is that among those nine drivers was not Leclerc who had a golden opportunity to get a pole in which logically he was the favorite and as indeed he gets it. We know that Saturdays are good for the Monaco driver, he always comes out with very good and promising performances, the thing is that we will see those performances again on race days.
Pole position was won by Leclerc as I already mentioned, followed by Verstappen and Sainz in third place. The thing is that both the Dutchman and the Spaniard were penalized and would go to seventh and eighteenth position respectively. In the end we would see a starting grid with Leclerc first, Russell second and McLaren third and fourth. In theory it should have been an easy race for the Ferrari driver because he had no major rivals near him, everything looked like a triumph for the tifosi at home but it was not so, the aggressiveness, the level and pace of Verstappen's car completely overturned the forecasts and soon we would see a race dominated from start to finish by the Red Bull driver.
The race started and soon we would begin to see the constant in this award. At the beginning it was seen how Leclerc was able to maintain the lead and those who followed him could not get very close, Russell in second place but in the distance an arrow with the colors of Red Bull could be seen approaching at a devastating pace. Verstappen went from seventh to fourth place in the first lap just for two laps later, that is to say in the third / fourth was already in second place on the heels of a Leclerc who could not keep pace with Max. Those first laps were very clean by the Red Bull driver, the truth is that I had rarely seen something like that, the ease with which he passed car after car was abysmal and it was a sign that probably there are no cars that can cope with that RB18.
On the other hand, Sainz was also doing his best, he started in 18th place and in almost no time he was already in the top ten. This is what happens when these penalties happen, the cars that are used to be in front start to climb positions like crazy showing the gap between the various teams. Hamilton was another one who had to come back quite a lot, but the British driver had a little more trouble than usual, we must remember that this Mercedes is not the same as last year, or maybe it is because his direct rivals improved a lot.
Vertappen's pace with those soft tires was very high and it was one that Ferrari could not sustain, each lap Max discounted more and more to Leclerc to the point that this is called to the pits to change to medium tires but they did it very soon, they thought that with that anticipation they could prevent Verstappen to continue widening the gap but nothing further from reality, Max lasted almost half of the race with those soft tires, the way he managed the degradation was masterful and it was from this moment when the race changed completely and more than on the track itself everything became more strategic. At this point and under my perception there was nothing to do, the race was Max's because they have a better car, a better driver and because at the strategy level there are not many who use them as Red Bull does.
Everything became monotonous until the event of the day happened. Ricciardo's car crashes in the middle of the track and with it the yellow flags and the Safety Car appear. Here begins the controversy because it took them a long time to remove the car from the track, as I said, according to the race direction they acted according to the rules but a grand prix can not end like that, I think everything was very embarrassing and could have been avoided. In these cases the red flag MUST be used, for the sake of the show and the competition itself. Now, to say that Leclerc had any chance and that the race was given to Max is a lie, that prize was defined long before, 17 seconds of advantage the Ferrari driver was not going to be able to cut them ever.
The checkered flag would fall with the Safety Car and with this Verstappen would reach his 11th victory of the season and fifth in a row. Leclerc second and what to say that Ferrari improved a little with respect to past races with good pit stops. Russell third and with this another podium, the young Briton is being very good this season the truth. But if we have to praise someone it is Nyck de Vries who made his debut here in Monza and finished ninth, in one race he already scored more points than Latifi. Williams should think about giving the seat to the Canadian as he proved to be a much better driver; I have always said it but Nicholas Latifi is the worst driver of the 20 drivers and one of the worst in recent years, incomprehensible that he will still be there next year.
Verstappen could be champion in Singapore in three weeks? - If a series of results happen, yes, he could be the champion. With 335 points, 116 points behind the second, Leclerc, and 125 points behind the third, Checo, I see it unlikely that the championship will slip from his hands. A season in which the Dutchman has been unbeatable, no one has been a rival, it was thought that Charles could but no way, the Ferrari is far from the performance of the Red Bull. In short, a bittersweet award that could have ended in a better way and that shows us that within the FIA there are still many things to improve.
