(ESP-ENG) Jornada oscura en la Champions League // Dark day in the Champions League!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
One more week that is leaving us and this is the fifth day of an edition of Champions League that is being in my opinion very unstable in the sense that there are few teams that have shown a really acceptable level because the reality is that the vast majority of clubs have been having many ups and downs both in performance, play and goal production. This may be due to many reasons, the tight schedule, the rotations that coaches are being forced to make due to the fact that many players may already be thinking about the World Cup or the most feasible of all: some projects may be wearing out.
Teams like Barcelona, Juventus, Atletico Madrid are some of the great teams that have already said goodbye to this edition and without knowing for sure if they will be in the Europa League because in the case of the Italians and those led by Cholo Simeone that possibility is hanging by a thread waiting for the last matchday next week. But what is regrettable is not that, it is the how, it is the poor and very poor way in which they are showing themselves on the field, teams that are not playing absolutely nothing. But we must also talk about a Real Madrid that lost their unbeaten streak playing at a low level and a Manchester City that in the last few games seems to have run out of gas, two consecutive games without scoring goals is something quite rare considering the squad they have.
What can we say about a Bayern team that was a complete steamroller both in Germany and yesterday at Camp Nou? - Watching that game was painful from a Barca perspective considering that the blaugranas didn't even get a shot on goal with any real danger throughout the ninety minutes. Xavi's situation is not understandable because he is not a newcomer to the club, in the summer transfer market some signings were made thinking about this season in order to be more competitive and productive but nothing of that is being seen. What we do see are excuses and more excuses from the coach saying that this elimination was not a failure but a bump in the road and appealing to a very distant and complicated hope that as they are still in competition for other titles it seems that they will have to win them to shut their mouths.
I am very surprised by the low level of self-criticism, I understand that a bad statement can cause an internal earthquake, but the attitude shown in front of the microphones is not possible either. It is very rare that these projects work, but which ones? - Well, those where former players take over their former teams with the idea that they have the DNA in their veins. Examples of failures are those of Pirlo at Juve, Lampard at Chelsea and now Xavi, because yes, what Barcelona is showing is a failure with all its letters. One sees one of their games and it is very difficult to deduce what they play, there is no depth, Pedri is supposed to be the one called to be the differentiator but lately it is costing him a lot, the defense is decimated by the casualties of their two central defenders and that is showing, the first two goals of the Germans were products of holes in the central saga.
In short, Barcelona's future is not very promising and the irony is that in La Liga they seem to have no problems BUT against considerably smaller teams. I already said it, Barca only beats inferior clubs and that is not a good symptom because they end up succumbing to those who face them. And if there is another team that has also sunk in the waters of the Champions League, it is Allegri's Juventus, who inexplicably continues, until 2025, confirmed by president Agnelli. The level of castling that this coach has at Juve is abysmal, I understand that leaving him would cost Juve a lot of money that they do not have and if we add to that looking for a new one, I think that given the current economy of the Vecchia Signora are situations that can not be allowed.
But then I ask, what is worth more? An economic collapse or being left out of any European competition and thus losing the opportunity to earn good money? - Because let's remember that clubs receive good amounts of money for winning games and advancing from one round to the next. Their transfer market was a reflection of that, with few known names and trying to put together a half-competitive team as best they could. But I don't know who is worse, Xavi's Barca or this Juve because watching the Italians play is a headache, the match against Benfica was tragic except for the last 20-25 minutes where Juve took a breath of air and searched like never before in this Champions League to the point of almost tying a game that was more than sentenced. By the way, something similar to Pique is happening to Bonucci, I feel that the Italian's level is getting poorer and poorer. He can have good games but in general I don't see him to be the main central defender of this team.
Juve's last game is against PSG, a team that just scored 7 goals with an exhibition of Messi, Neymar and Mbappé and that is very unlikely to lose against the Italians. The point here is that for the disaster to be complete, Maccabi needs a draw and Juve to lose or for the Israelis to beat Benfica in a brutal form and the Italians to fail to win. A dark and bleak outlook for the Turin side. And lastly, I want to talk about Casa Blanca, a team that had been at a half-speed because although they won their matches, they did so in a lackluster manner, without a good game and as always with goals in the last ten minutes of the match.
There is something I could notice and that is that this Madrid has two faces and this happens as a result of the absence of three pillars, Modric, Valverde and Benzema. It is impressive how the performance of a team can vary when the creation of play does not go through certain legs and the state of grace of Valverde this season is crazy, he is a player who took the leadership of Casemiro and multiplied it by three. He has been determinant both in goals scored and assists. Modric with the age he has is the other engine of the midfield, the vision and magic often make Madrid's game more colorful and above all effective. And finally Benzema, the Ballon d'Or, a guy who is lethal in the area and although it is true that lately the level has not been the same since the last injury, the same for his way of playing often pivotal and dragging marks is something that helps greatly to the scoring and creation of goals collectively.
The second side is the one we saw on Tuesday, one in which the scoreboard ended up very disguised for what it really was, a Madrid without soul and with a poor performance where the lack of these three players was noticeable. They lost their undefeated record against a tidy German club that played effective and efficient soccer, in many passages they outplayed the Spaniards who at times were not on the pitch and as a result they had to appeal again to goals in extremis thanks to a penalty in the boots of Rodrygo. There were many things to improve, they did not look good but unlike the other two teams, here it is because of very specific and perfectly improvable things.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos leemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
