Today, in the middle of 2023, there are still people who consider that everything animated is for children or is childish, that it is not worth wasting time watching "comics", it happens with anime and animated movies and series. It is not possible that they are more wrong, but that's up to them. Having said that today I come with one of those classics that has come to Netflix with a new title, new characters but with the same background. Castlevania is not something new, it is a video game from back in the late eighties and to this day has more than 30 titles, hence the large number of fans it has. But the good thing about these stories is that they are precisely made for those who are not familiar with these characters.

Everyone is familiar with Dracula, everyone knows who he is and while it is true that within this universe he is an important piece, not everything revolves around him, I say this for those who are interested and want to give this animated series a chance. Here you will find blood, violence, mutilations, death of all kinds but there is also love and a lot of drama because each character has his own internal battle that makes the story much more credible and deep. I repeat, this is not a Cartoon Network cartoon, this is a very well crafted series with spectacular animation. So without further ado, let's go ahead and talk about this new story within the Belmont universe.

This new chapter begins a few centuries after the original story of Castlevania, a series that is also on Netflix and consists of 4 seasons. Here we have Ritcher Belmont, the last descendant of this vampire hunting family in a new adventure where it seems that humanity is still in danger besieged by these creatures of the night. We are in France in 1792, in the middle of the French revolution, a revolution that is in danger because the people of power, money and position do not want this to happen and for that they had to make a pact, not with the devil but almost. And there is a rumor that a vampire called the Messiah, something ironic the truth, will arrive to end this revolution and "liberate" humanity.

These people don't know what trouble they have gotten themselves into by making pacts with something that they have no idea of the degree of evil it wields and that's what Ritcher and company will be there for, to prevent that from happening. Ritcher's company is Maria, a sorceress and Anette another sorceress but she comes from the Caribbean, that is to say, one who practices Santeria. They will have to prevent the vampires from achieving their mission, one of them being to cover the sun completely so that perpetual darkness reigns over the Earth. The truth is a series that, whether you are a fan or not, will catch you from the first chapter, it is not necessary that you have seen something before, although I recommend it, but if you haven't, nothing happens because the story is very enjoyable.

The first thing I want to highlight is the animation, it is the best of the series. When I start watching an animated series or film the first thing I usually see is this because it is what will tell me if what I am going to see is of quality or not. How do I know? - Well, basically everything should be as realistic as possible, the characters should be well done, people should look like people and everything else should be faithful to their nature. It is also important everything related to the movements, in a series like this where what predominates are the fights and everything is bloody has to be very colorful but understandable and fluid. And last but not least would be the expression of emotions, the ability to transmit despite the fact that everything is animated; Castlevania fulfills all this well.

The story itself is also good, it is an adaptation of the video game with slight changes, but it is still one that reaches and catches. It has elements such as politics, religion, love in its different forms and above all revenge, the latter is one of the great engines. I liked the context of Anette, she is a slave who comes from this side of the world where she had a difficult past and thanks to her African roots is how she got to know Santeria. I found everything that surrounds her super interesting, it gives another touch to the story, a more mystical one than it originally is. You will see many family conflicts and unresolved problems that to some extent are the fuse that ignites everything that happens throughout the eight chapters.

I personally enjoyed the series a lot, in fact I watched it in one day because the episodes are less than half an hour long, making it easy to watch quickly. As for the characters, I liked almost all of them. The dubbing actors are vital here because they are in charge of giving life to each one, of transmitting through their voices what the character is really going through; believe me, if the actor doesn't do a good job, it can damage the whole experience. For example, there is a character who sings opera, he does it in such a melancholic and heartfelt way that when you see him in the situation he is in, you will quickly feel empathy, it will be automatic.

The series and the characters are a bit about overcoming past traumas. As I said, each one has their cross to bear and throughout the series we will see how they use those feelings as fuel to overcome obstacles, both physical and personal. It happens with Ritcher who suffered an important loss, with Anette because of her past and with Maria who will find out something that will unsettle all her beliefs and the feelings she may have felt at some point. I tell you, it is a very deep story with many nuances that make it incredible to watch. Add to all of that the amount of vampires killed in all sorts of unimaginable ways and the end result is a great animated series, like few others.

I give it an 8.5/10. I like Castlevania, I always have, but with this series even more. They have it all as you have been able to read and that is why I highly recommend them to you, whether you are a fan or not. I assure you that you will enjoy it a lot. Get rid of the chip that because it is animated it is something childish and you will end up watching a great story. Eight chapters and you have it on Netflix. Here is the trailer.
