Quién no recuerda las películas de Underworld o Van Helsing en donde Kate Beckinsale nos mostraba todos sus dotes en una combinación entre John Wick y Blade, films que creo que en su mayoría son bastante aceptables ya que veíamos una combinación entre John Wick y el mismo Blade. Esperar ver en pleno 2024 de nuevo a Kate en un papel que quizás no es el mismo a aquellos pero haciendo gala de lo buena actriz de acción que puede llegar a ser, por lo menos para mi, fue una grata sorpresa. Canary Black es una película de acción y espionaje con todos los clichés que te puedas imaginar en este género pero que no deja de ser muy entretenida. Como siempre la crítica masacró a este film, no es el mejor pero sin dudas tampoco es un desastre.

Who doesn't remember the Underworld or Van Helsing movies where Kate Beckinsale showed us all her skills in a combination between John Wick and Blade, films that I think are mostly quite acceptable since we saw a combination between John Wick and Blade itself. Expecting to see Kate again in 2024 in a role that may not be the same as those but showing how good an action actress she can be, at least for me, was a pleasant surprise. Canary Black is an action and espionage movie with all the clichés you can imagine in this genre but it is still very entertaining. As always the critics massacred this film, it's not the best but it's certainly not a disaster either.

Esta trama se centra en Avery Graves (Kate Beckinsale), una mujer espía perteneciente a la CIA y que como casi siempre sucede lleva una doble vida la cual su esposo desconoce. Avery es la mejor en su clase tanto física como mentalmente, de ahí a que le eficacia y eficiencia a la hora de hacer alguna misión u operativo sea de un 100%. Pero no siempre le salen las cosas bien y es que buen día su marido es secuestrado en su propia casa con la finalidad de llegarle a ella y así hacerla más vulnerable. Es acá cuando comienza el chantaje y es que los terroristas que tienen a su esposo quieren un favor a cambio de la vida del hombre.

This plot focuses on Avery Graves (Kate Beckinsale), a female spy belonging to the CIA and that as almost always happens leads a double life which her husband is unaware of. Avery is the best in her class both physically and mentally, hence her effectiveness and efficiency when doing any mission or operation is 100%. But things don't always go well for her and one day her husband is kidnapped in her own house with the purpose of getting to her and making her more vulnerable. This is when the blackmail begins and the terrorists who have her husband want a favor in exchange for the man's life.

En este film veremos al gran Ray Stevenson en uno de sus últimos trabajos antes de fallecer, acá hace del jefe de Avery (Jarvis Hedlund), un tipo duro que lleva una ala de la CIA que maneja a este tipo de agentes y misiones especiales; además de ser muy amigo de Graves. La cosa es que en este punto de la trama las traiciones están por todos lados y confiar se hace muy complicado. Dada la peligrosidad del "favor", lo que buscan estos terroristas es que esta agente traicione a su propio país consiguiendo un archivo que pudiera desatar un desastre gubernamental. Cómo ven más cliché no puede ser, todos los elementos que se esperan de este tipo de historias están sin excepción.

In this film we will see the great Ray Stevenson in one of his last works before passing away, here he plays Avery's boss (Jarvis Hedlund), a tough guy who runs a wing of the CIA that handles this type of agents and special missions; besides being a close friend of Graves. The thing is that at this point in the plot, betrayals are everywhere and trusting becomes very complicated. Given the danger of the “favor”, what these terrorists are looking for is for this agent to betray her own country by getting a file that could unleash a government disaster. As you can see, it couldn't be more cliché, all the elements expected of this type of story are present without exception.

La trama es todo lo que se imaginan, es una llena de una acción, persecuciones, disparos, clandestinidad, espionaje, etc etc. Desde el comienzo te mantiene conectado, es como el preámbulo de lo que se viene. La historia tiene la apariencia de ser super lineal pero la realidad es que no porque hay un par de plot twist que creo que hacen muy interesante la trama, creo que sin ellos si estaríamos ante un producto muy malo. Lo único que pudiera reprochar un poco es el guión, hay unas cosas que no cuadran o que por lo menos se pudieron haber hecho diferente, hay huecos por ahí que uno los tiene que llenar a punta de suposiciones ya que nunca dan un contexto del por qué.

The plot is everything you can imagine, it's action packed, chases, shootings, clandestinity, espionage, etc etc etc. From the beginning it keeps you connected, it's like the preamble of what's to come. The story has the appearance of being super linear but the reality is that it is not because there are a couple of plot twists that I think make the plot very interesting, I think that without them if we would be facing a very bad product. The only thing I could reproach a little is the script, there are some things that do not fit or at least could have been done differently, there are gaps out there that one has to fill them with assumptions because they never give a context as to why.

Inexplicable también es el nombre que decidieron para el film. Para los que no lo sepan hay un personaje en el universo de DC Comics llamado Black Canary, una heroína que muy casualmente también tiene el cabello amarillo. Evidentemente es imposible confundir una cosa con la otra pero pudiendo haber escogido otro nombre que finalmente hayan decidido este se me hace muy extraño. ¿Un genio del marketing o un completo desastre?. Más allá de esto hay que decir que las escenas de acción, de pelea cuerpo a cuerpo y hasta una persecución que se da en el centro de Zagreb en Croacia estuvieron bien logradas, no tengo quejas, no son dignas de un cine top pero para entretener están más que bien.

Inexplicable is also the name they decided on for the film. For those who don't know, there is a character in the DC Comics universe called Black Canary, a heroine who also happens to have yellow hair. Obviously it is impossible to confuse one thing with the other, but if they could have chosen another name, this one seems very strange to me. A marketing genius or a complete disaster? Beyond this it must be said that the action scenes, melee and even a chase that takes place in the center of Zagreb in Croatia were well done, I have no complaints, they are not worthy of a top cinema but to entertain are more than fine.

Beckinsale, como ya dije, es muy buena actriz para este tipo de papeles, acá no vamos a valorar la actuación como tal porque al ser una película de mera acción pues las actuaciones quedan un poco de lado. Si hay sus partes de drama y desconcierto pero nada destacable. Ray Stevenson como siempre era muy bueno en lo que hacía, acá su personaje es más burocrático que otra cosa pero siempre era muy cool verlo en pantalla. Sin mucho más que decir acerca de este apartado lo que queda es aclarar que estamos ante una película de entretenimiento puro, de esas que ves cuando tienes una hora y media libre y no te quieres aburrir.

Beckinsale, as I said, is a very good actress for this kind of roles, here we are not going to value the acting as such because being a pure action film, the performances are a little aside. There are some parts of drama and confusion but nothing remarkable. Ray Stevenson as always was very good at what he did, here his character is more bureaucratic than anything else but it was always very cool to see him on screen. Without much more to say about this section what remains is to clarify that this is a pure entertainment movie, one of those you see when you have an hour and a half to spare and you don't want to get bored.

Es un film extremadamente cliché, con algunas lagunas pero que se deja ver perfectamente, no será uno de James Bond pero el entretenimiento está garantizado. Le doy un 6/10. Después de leer algunas cosas esperaba algo peor pero por lo menos siento que no perdí mi tiempo ni me aburrí. Dura poco más de hora y media y está en Prime Video. Les dejo el tráiler por acá.

It's an extremely cliché film, with some gaps but it's perfectly watchable, it won't be one of James Bond but the entertainment is guaranteed. I give it a 6/10. After reading some things I expected worse but at least I feel like I didn't waste my time or get bored. It's a little over an hour and a half long and it's on Prime Video. I leave the trailer here.
