(ESP-ENG) Camino a los Oscars: Belfast, una joya oculta // Road to the Oscars: Belfast, Belfast, a hidden gem.
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
We have reached the fifth film I have seen from the list of nominees for the Oscars that will take place on March 27th, that is, next weekend. I usually don't like to get lost at the ceremony and I always try to see as many films as possible but sometimes due to time constraints it gets a little complicated. Fortunately this has not been a problem lately and I have been able to enjoy these great films on time.
Of all the films I have seen I think Belfast is the one that has surprised me the most because I really did not expect to like it so much, I do not know if I would consider it to win the award for best film but at least to fight for that possibility. It is real and raw, pure with touches of comedy, a film that undoubtedly adapts to the times of war conflicts that we are living today. So let's talk a little bit about this marvel of a story...
This is a story that takes place in the conflictive Northern Ireland of the sixties, where one of the biggest civil wars in Europe was about to begin. In this plot we will be accompanied by Buddy (Jude Hill), a cheerful, intelligent and very dreamy boy who lives with his parents, brother and grandparents and that for life's sake he had to live a stormy time in an environment, as I mentioned, very conflictive. An environment full of religious discrimination full of violence, some cultural changes that were beginning to take place, labor conflicts, social discontent, etc.
But the film is not about those problems but about how they are seen and experienced through Buddy's perspective. All Buddy wants is to be happy and to achieve this he relies on his love for movies, the special relationship he has with his grandfather and the classmate he likes and will try to do anything to win her over. All this without ceasing to dream of a future where all the reality he sees in the streets near his home does not exist.
I confess that I did not have many expectations when I decided to see this film but friends, how wrong I was and now I understand why it has so many Oscar nominations, seven to be exact. It is a story that is autobiographical by its director Kenneth Branagh who was the one who lived this story so the film is a collection of his childhood memories and he captured them in a truly extraordinary production.
Personally I think it is a very touching story because it is to see the innocence of a child who is very perceptive and at the same time dealing with all the things that are happening around him. This movie is surrounded by an aura of much feeling because it gives us an almost perfect x-ray of the problems, experiences and joys of an average family with all the difficulties that exist around them.
And it is a drama, but the amazing thing is how Branagh was able to nuance all those concerns to make the atmosphere more enjoyable and thus give us a few touches of dramatic comedy that I'm not going to lie, I got a couple of laughs throughout the film. And all of that is thanks to Buddy's personality, Pop's (Ciarán Hinds) wit and way of being, and the level of camaraderie that existed in that small Belfast street where everyone knew, loved and appreciated each other like the big family they were.
But we must talk about the protagonists and in this case one of the special mentions goes to the youngest of the cast, Jude Hill, a boy who has already won a Critics Choice for best young actor. The truth is that I am very impressed how a child of only 11 years old can act so naturally and fluently in front of a camera; when he had to be cheerful and funny he did it without problems, when the environment required more intensity and drama he did it without problems, there is nothing bad to say about this young actor, I think he is the captivating hook of this film.
And if we have to talk about geniuses the mention goes to the grandparents that personally this pair of characters touched my soul. Ciarán Hinds and Judi Dench, both nominated for best supporting actor and actress, are just that, acting geniuses. They are those characters that mark the viewer because of how sensitive and charismatic they are and because they somehow radiate a certain familiarity that makes you immediately connect with them. I think when that happens it's because the actor or actress did an epic job. The chemistry that you see or will see in this couple is also one of the great achievements of the casting. And that's just it, the truth is that this is a film with an extraordinary cast that led them to win a Critics Choice Award for Best Acting Ensemble.
In short, a film where another of the great successes for me is the photography, even though it was not taken into account by the academy. The black and white format will always be attractive because it accentuates the emotions much more and for this film it fit like a glove given the load of drama and experiences that are there. A real gem of a film that I highly recommend, while watching it you really enjoy it because it has all kinds of emotions, you can be laughing and after thirty seconds you get overwhelmed by the violence and then go to absolute sadness.
8/10 because stories and movies like this are not seen much anymore and when they come out you have to appreciate them as the jewels they are. It has a length of an hour and a half, it's quite short considering the average nowadays, so it doesn't get heavy and slow at all. We'll see what award it gets, I'm not quite sure yet but I'm sure it won't go away at zero. I leave the trailer for you to take a look.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
Saludos.
Es una película que disfrutarás bastante.
Gracias por leer, saludos!!
