Dune: Book vs Movie | One good, the other less so

Not long ago there was a big commotion with the release of the new Dune movie, so much so that I was one of the many who had to read the book almost immediately after, and not for good reasons, at least in my case, because although I liked the movie, it was just that, a taste, it didn't go beyond that, and when I read the book I realized why I only liked it and it didn't drive me crazy like half the world, although as always, the opinions and critics were divided.

I was hoping not to make this post comparing the movie and the book, but I must do it this way, and as it will be so it will be full of spoilers, so read it at your own risk, I will say certain things about the book, certain things about the movie, essential and necessary things to express why, although I liked the movie, it is not entirely to my liking.

No hace mucho se vivió una gran conmoción con el estreno de la nueva película de Dune, tanto así que fui une de les muches que tuvo que leerse el libro casi que inmediatamente después, y no por buenas razones, al menos en mi caso, pues aunque la película me gustó, fue solo eso, un gusto, no pasó de ahí, y al leer el libro me di cuenta de por qué solo me gustó y no me enloqueció como a medio mundo, aunque como siempre, las opiniones y críticas estuvieron divididas.

Esperaba no hacer esta publicación comparando la película y el libro, pero debo hacerlo así, y como va a ser así estará lleva de spoilers, así que leanla bajo su propia responsabilidad, diré ciertas cosas del libro, ciertas cosas de la película, cosas esenciales y necesarias para poder expresar el por qué, aunque la película me gustó, no es del todo de mi agrado.

Both the book and the film will tell the life of Paul Atreides, heir to the house Atreides, who for a reason of the most minimal and miserable must go to the planet Arrakis, an almost inhospitable planet, full of dunes as far as the eye can see, and the only thing of value is the melange spice, coveted by the whole universe, and many people do not agree that the Atreides house is who in a way, are the ones who will control it, so the fall of the Atreides House is gestated, and therefore the rise of Paul as someone who should never have existed.

My problem with the movie started when I saw it without knowing at all what it was about, and although the movie fulfills perfectly to make you aware of what you are seeing, of the story, at the time I always thought it was missing something, and indeed it was missing too much, because in the movie we will only see the narration from Paul's point of view, and although I didn't know this when I saw the movie, something in me sensed it because for a movie of a masterpiece of science fiction it wasn't completely satisfactory.

Tanto el libro como la película van a relatar la vida de Paul Atreides, heredero de la casa Atreides, quienes por una razón de lo más mínima y miserable deben ir al planeta Arrakis, una planeta casi inhospitable, lleno de dunas hasta donde la vista alcanza, y la única cosa de valor es la especia melange, codiciada por todo el universo, y muchas personas no están de acuerdo con que la casa Atreides sea quienes en cierta forma, sean quienes la van a controlar, por lo que se gesta la caída de la Casa Atreides, y por consiguiente el ascendo de Paul como alguien que nunca debio existir.

Mi problema con la película comenzó cuando la vi sin saber en absoluto sobre qué trataba, y aunque la película cumple perfectamente con ponerte al tanto de lo que estás viendo, de la historia, en su momento siempre pensé que le hacía falta algo, y en efecto le hacía falta demasiado, pues en la película solo vamos a ver la narración desde el punto de vista de Paul, cuando en el libro hay al menos una docena de personajes que van contando la historia mientras la vamos leyendo, y si bien no sabía esto cuando vi la película, algo en mí lo intuía porque para ser la película de una obra maestra de la ciencia ficción no llegaba a ser satisfactoria por completo.

-I will not be afraid. Fear kills the mind. Fear is the little-death that leads to total destruction. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me; and when it has passed, I will turn my inner eye to scrutinize its path. Where the fear has passed there will be nothing. There will be only me.

-“No tendré miedo. El miedo mata la mente. El miedo es la pequeña muerte que conduce a la destrucción total. Afrontaré mi miedo. Dejaré que pase sobre mí y a través de mí;; y cuando haya pasado, giraré mi ojo interior para escrutar su camino. Allá donde haya pasado el miedo ya no habrá nada. Solo estaré yo”.

The movie covers approximately 55% of the book, of that 55% they only show 20% and I think I am exaggerating, because although of course, Paul's point of view in his story is extremely important, the rest of the people around him that tell us the story is equally or even more important, and the fact that they sacrificed that to make the movie is a shame, and I understand that they did it because the amount of information they give us is overwhelming and even the book itself tells you what is going to happen before it happens, and with that, the movie would have lost part of its magic.

I was told that the book was going to be too dense to read quickly, and although I lasted a week reading it, I would have done it in less time if I had not been watching movies and series at the same time, I say this because I loved it completely, I devoured it completely because I had not read something as wonderful as this for a long time, something that did not happen to me with the movie, because although the movie is good, visually it is immaculate, it was more dense and difficult to digest than the book because of how slow it is, and that is already a cry to heaven on my part, because I love slow movies, but the lack of information in the movie made it almost indigestible for me.

La película abarca aproximadamente el 55% del libro, de ese 55% solo muestran el 20% y creo que estoy exagerando, porque aunque claro que el punto de vista de Paul en su historia es sumamente importante, el resto de personas a su alrededor que nos cuentan la historia es igual o más importante aún, y el hecho de que sacrificaran eso para hacer la película es una lástima, y entiendo que lo hayan hecho pues la cantidad de información que nos dan es abrumadora e incluso el mismo libro te cuenta lo que va a pasar antes de que pase, y con eso la película hubiera perdido parte de su magia.

Me dijeron que el libro iba a ser muy denso para leerlo rápido, y aunque duré una semana leyéndolo, lo hubiera hecho en menos tiempo si no hubiera estado viendo películas y series a la vez, digo esto porque lo amé por completo, me lo devoré por completo pues tenía tiempo que no leía una cosa tan maravillosa como esta, cosa que no me pasó con la película, pues aunque la película es buena, visualmente es inmaculada, se me hizo más densa y difícil de digerir que el libro por lo lenta que es, y eso ya es un grito al cielo de mi parte, porque yo amo las películas lentas, pero la falta de información en la película la hizo casi indigerible para mí.

One of my favorite things about the book was the text fragments that were at the beginning of each chapter, each one in a way made reference to what we were going to read next, but the biggest spoiler of all those fragments was who was writing them, who was the person who was collecting all that information from Paul and what he was using it for, I would love to tell you this spoiler, but I'm not going to do it, and I'm not doing it just because it's a spoiler for the second book because if it was from the first book I would have done it already, even though at the end of the first book they give us that hint so we're not surprised when we start the second book, which I'm still reading.

If that had been in the movie I would have liked it more, the truth, and I would have slept less, I must confess that I saw the movie in three parts, at the end of the first part I fell asleep, so that day I turned off the TV and continued sleeping, at the end of the second part the next day I started to play to avoid falling asleep, after several hours playing I decided to finish watching it and I almost fell asleep again.

Una de mis cosas favoritas del libro fueron los fragmentos de textos que estaban al inicio de cada capítulo, cada uno en cierta forma hacía referencia a lo que íbamos a leer a continuación, pero el mayor spoiler de todos esos fragmentos era quién los escribía, quién era la persona que estaba recopilando toda esa información de Paul y para qué la estaba usando, amaría decirles este spoiler, pero no lo voy a hacer, y no lo hago solo porque es un spoiler del segundo libro, porque si fuera del primer libro ya lo hubiera hecho, aunque al final del primer libro nos dan ese indicio para que no nos sorprenda al comenzar el segundo libro, que estoy leyendo todavía.

Si eso hubiera estado en la película me hubiera gustado más, la verdad, y me hubiera dormido menos, debo confezar que vi la película en tres partes, al final de la primera parte me dormí, así que ese día apagué el televisor y seguí durmiendo, al final de la segunda parte al siguiente día me puse a jugar para evitar dormirme, después de varias horas jugando decidí terminar de verla y casi me duermo de nuevo.

-Any road, if followed to the end, leads to exactly nowhere. Climb just a little way up the mountain to see if it is a mountain. From the top of the mountain, you will not be able to see the mountain."

-“Cualquier camino, si se sigue hasta el fin, no conduce exactamente a ningún lugar. Escalad tan sólo un poco la montaña para comprobar si es una montaña. Desde la cima de la montaña, no podréis ver la montaña.”

I must make a clarification and it is the following, the fact that I fell asleep does not make it a bad movie, not at all, because a bad movie instead of putting you to sleep what it does is to disgust you, make you despise it and remove it to see something much better in terms of entertainment, but not Dune, it is so magical for the view that relaxes you in excess and that is what allows you to sleep, but if I had had a little more information I would have turned that relaxation into pure ecstasy.

The opposite of what happens with the book, you will never relax reading it, never, the information comes from so many points of view that it is impossible to stop thinking, to fit each piece and thus know what is really happening, and as I said at the beginning, the reason why the Atreides family was sent to Arrakis will go so unnoticed that you have to read two and three times that part to finally assimilate that it was so and not something completely shocking as one would expect.

Debo hacer una aclaración y es la siguiente, el hecho de que me durmiera no la hace una mala película, en absoluto, porque una mala película en vez de dormirte lo que hace es darte asco, hacer que la desprecies y la quites para ver algo mucho mejor en cuanto a entretenimiento, pero Dune no, es tan mágnifica para la vista que te relaja en exceso y es lo que te permite dormir, pero si hubiera tenido un poco más de información hubiera convertido esa relajación en éxtasis puro.

Cosa contraria a lo pasa con el libro, jamás y nunca te vas a relajar leyéndolo, nunca, la información viene desde tantos puntos de vista que es imposile dejar de pensar, de encajar cada pieza y así saber qué es lo que está pasando en realidad, y como dije al principio, la razón por la que la familia Atreides fue enviada a Arrakis va a pasar tan desapercibida que hay que leer dos y tres veces esa parte para finalmente asimiliar que eso fue así y no algo completamente impactante como uno esperaría.

One of the memes that made me laugh the most about the movie was something like this, 'The movie where Zendaya does nothing and is only in one scene: Dune', I saw the meme before watching the movie, and about two days after watching it I saw the meme again and laughed for about half an hour because it is absolutely right, they cut the movie just when Paul meets Chani and he has the knife duel to the death, and it is only from that moment that Chani's relevance starts to grow.

If they had cut the movie before that moment it would have been perfect, because it leaves you in a good place, waiting for something important to happen next, that would be the shocking beginning of the next movie and we would all be happy, but no, they cut the movie in a shocking moment, they don't explain the relevance of that moment and leave us waiting without being able to breathe and without understanding what is happening.

Uno de los memes que más me dio risa sobre la película fue algo así, 'La película donde Zendaya no hace nada y sale solo en una escena: Dune', vi el meme antes de ver la película, y como dos días después de verla volví a ver el meme y me reí como media hora, porque tiene toda la razón del mundo, cortan la película justo cuando Paul conoce a Chani y él tiene el duelo a muerte con cuchillo, y es solo a partir de ese momento que la relevancia de Chani comienza a crecer.

Si hubieran cortado la película antes de ese momento hubiera sido perfecta, porque te deja en un buen lugar, esperando que suceda algo importante a continuación, que sería el comienzo impactante de la siguiente película y todes seríamos felices, pero no, cortan la película en un momento impactante, no explican la relevancia de ese momento y nos dejan a la espera sin poder respirar y sin entender qué es lo que está sucediendo.

-When religion and politics travel in the same chariot, the travelers think that nothing can stop them on their way... Their movement is accelerated... faster and faster. They put aside all obstacles, and do not think that a precipice is always discovered too late."

I already told you that in the book there are many characters that are going to narrate the story, not only Paul, as it happens in the movie; and it is in that many stories that we are going to fall in love because although Paul's story is the main one, it is all the lives around him that give sense to his, as we know, many times the secondary characters are the ones that give sense to a story, and here is something completely right, without those stories we are left with a character halfway with whom we cannot empathize enough, something that happened to me.

Now that I finally got all this out of my system, I'm going to continue reading the second book, because if the first one is interesting to unimaginable levels, this second book is stronger than you might expect, there are new characters, and although Paul himself tells us the ending from the beginning, which I'm still not absolutely sure about, he gives us the possibility that the ending may be different, and it just made me more curious than I was to find out.

Ya les dije que en el libro hay muchos personajes que van a narrar la historia, no solo Paul, como sucede en la película; y es en esa gran cantidad de historias que nos vamos a enamorar, porque si bien la historia de Paul es la principal, son todas las vidas a su alrededor quienes le dan sentido a la de él, como bien sabemos, muchas veces los personajes secundarios son los que le dan sentido a una historia, y aquí es algo completamente acertado, sin esas historias nos dejan a un personaje a medias con quien no podemos llegar a empatizar lo suficiente, cosa que me sucedió.

Ahora que finalmente saqué de mi sistema todo esto, voy a poner continuar con la lectura del segundo libro, pues si el primero es interesante a niveles inimaginables, este segundo libro es más fuerte lo que se podría esperar, hay nuevos personajes, y aunque el mismo Paul nos cuenta el final desde el principio, cosa sobre la que todavía no tengo seguridad absoluta, nos da la posibilidad de que ese final sea diferente, y justo me acaba de dar más curiosidad de la que tenía por descubrirlo.
