Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa!

I have decided to start a challenging series of posts! BUT I Need your Help!

This is the challenge I'm setting myself every week: I ask for cover song requests on the MUSIC community, and then pick a favourite song to learn and post a live video of me attempting it. The person who asked for the winning song then gets 50% of the post rewards in HP!

I received some excellent requests this week! If I didn't get around to your request this week, please keep asking for it and there is a good chance it will win in the weeks to come! Please keep trying with either the same request, or a different one, in the comments of this post?

There were also some songs that I would love to tackle with my singing and writing friend @clairemobey. When I see her again we will do some duets, or songs where she should sing lead, and share the posts and reward the people who requested those songs as well! This request challenge seems to be (hopefully) taking off!

Let's get to this week's winner!

This week's winner is @edwardstobia who asked for something I thought was quite terrifying... Asaf Avidan puts down his guitar, and distorts his voice for an absolutely amazing loop pedal performance of his brilliant song "Her Lies". I knew I couldn't hope to sound anything like that, but that I have a loop pedal lying around that I want to get more comfortable with... so I thought I would learn a lot just by trying to do some elements of the song!

I don't have any device that distorts vocals like Asaf did, so I thought I would try think out the box and sing into a fan! Haha - I'm not sure the microphone picked it up like my ears did! I still sound "pretty normal"?

Here is Asaf's amazing performance that I used as inspiration:

Well done @edwardstobia - you will be getting 50% of this post's rewards in HP!

Well that should be it, but I just can't help but try another song as well. I should accept that this is going to happen every time I get a couple of good requests? And so @sirenahippie, from Venezuela, you will be getting 20% of this post's rewards in HP for requesting "Baby Can I hold You" by Tracy Chapman, who I adore!

Here is the original:

NOW READER, perhaps next week is your turn? Please give me some suggestions of cover songs you would like me to try next week, and maybe you'll be the winner next time!

See you Next Week!

Lyrics for "Her Lies" by Asaf Avidan

She said "baby, get down on your knees"
I said "babe if you insist"
She said "why do you keep seeing things you know that don't exist"
I said "baby, I love you, now what can I do,
I'll probably love you till the day I die"
She said "well pretty honey, if that's true than give me both them, pretty eyes"
I said "baby, you can have them - you can have my eyes"
See I was thinking if she took them I won't see her lies
But my baby – I can taste her lies.
She said "baby, get into this sack"
I said "baby, I don't know what's there"
She said "all I want to do with you
Is take you with me everywhere"
I said "okay, baby take me everywhere,
Take me through the day, through the night"
She said "oh silly babe, don't you kid with me,
You know I really don't have the time".
Still I said "baby, you can take me" – and I got right in
See, I was thinking if she took me, I could taste her skin
But my baby, all I taste is her lies.
Oh my baby, all I taste is her lies,
Oh my honey, all I taste is her lies.
I said "baby, you can have them - you can have my eyes"
See I was thinking if she took them I won't see her lies
But my baby – I can taste her lies.
Oh my baby,
Oh my honey,
Oh my baby
Oh my baby,
I can taste…
Her lies.

Lyrics for "Baby Can I Hold You" by Tracy Chapman

Sorry
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
Words don't come easily
Like sorry, like sorry
Forgive me
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
Words don't come easily
Like forgive me, forgive me
But you can say baby
Baby, can I hold you tonight?
Maybe if I told you the right words
Ooh, at the right time you'd be mine
I love you
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
Words don't come easily
Like I love you, I love you
But you can say baby
Baby, can I hold you tonight?
Maybe if I told you the right words
Ooh, at the right time you'd be mine
Baby, can I hold you tonight?
Maybe if I told you the right words
Ooh, at the right time you'd be mine
You'd be mine
You'd be mine

You did a great job with the vocal performance of In a Box. It's not a very easy song from what I see, and yet, I think you captured the essence of its rhythms. You have a very good voice, and for that I congratulate you. I love Guns N' Roses and I would like to hear this song, hopefully it will be one of the most selected 🙈.

I wish you a lot of success.

Holy shit @jasperdick well done! Love the beard and the tank top. What happened to the Chinese shop tattoos we discussed? 🤣 One hell of a challenge. Well done and hats off to you (pun intended)!

Oh I do love Tracy so much. I remember as a little girl, when I performed Meant 2 B at Grove at one of the school concerts, I didn't know what it meant at the time but one if the parents came up to me after the show and said they thought I was the Tracy Chapman of my time.

If only I knew back then what I know now and I didn't stop. But I did. And we can't time travel.

But I do have the now.

And watching you do these videos every week is so damn inspiring!

Wow, I feel super happy and honored that you have chosen my song to perform it, for me this is great, because I like that song a lot, it brings me good and beautiful memories; and you sang it great, really beautiful. I really appreciate your gesture of making an exception and that my song was runner-up, super!

I congratulate @edwardstobia also for his selection and for having won with his song, which @jasperdick you have sung in a great way, the fan thing was very creative, good effect.

A hug and see you next week.

@sirenahippie your song selection was classic and beautiful. Technically can only ever be runner up, but that means I'm still in the game! @jasperdick what shall I challenge you with, next? And what is my challenge from you? Hmmm some pondering is in order.

This is great, I had not seen this initiative, there are many excellent songs of fun singers, who have made history with their voices and songs, I particularly do not have a good voice to sing 🤣, but I sing in the shower hahaha.
I don't sing , but if you do this song I'll take you to Twitter and put as ringtone your version 😁😎.

When I say that you are an artist full of surprises, I am not lying. You have produced an incredible version. I thought you wouldn't, but I also know, that you are a super creative artist. I applaud and value your ability and heart. And not to mention the other song, with which you made me travel in the cup of coffee I was drinking. I got lost, I just kept listening to "Baby Can I hold You" You have a big fan here. 🤘

Excellent performances bro , bravo maestro!. The first one is incredibly creative ,hats of to you on that one. Baby can I hold you tonight is one of my favourite songs.

My friend Chaste-music sang it shortly before life in the Philippine's got to hard for her to continue posting here on HIVE. I hope to find a way to get her back here soon. The song makes me think of her, here is her version of "Baby Can I hold you tonight"

As a request for next week why don't you try a Whitney Houston song? This week I have been playing around trying to learn "Didn't We Almost Have It All" which is a wonderful ballad with some beautiful chord voicings. I have always shied away from songs that have barre chords. For years I have struggled to smoothly add even a B minor into any song I try to cover.

"Didnt We Almost Have It All" has a progression that goes E /A /Gm / Cm / F#m / B / E /A /B
up until recently I wouldn't have had the confidence to approach that sequence but these last few days practicing it it is starting to come together and I might have a version Im confident enough to post by the end of the week.

So my request would be to see you take a shot at it :)
