MUSIC: Three Tune Tuesday - 3 Songs about Suicide (2 Covers and an Original!)
Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa.
This is my second week contributing to "Three Tunes Tuesday", started by @ablaze.
I thought it would be good to continue building my mini-set of 2 cover songs and 1 original song around a theme. This week I've chosen the heavy and emotionally-challenging theme of Songs about Suicide.
To everyone who has lost somebody they care about to Suicide, I am truly sorry and know a little bit about how that feels. I hope you still find these songs interesting and worth listening to.
The songs I've chosen are:
"The Butcher Boy" - This is a traditional song, but the version I know is by Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers. Watch their stunning performance of this perfect tragic ballad here:
"Suicidal Dream" - This is by an Australian Rock band from the 90's called Silverchair that my older sister introduced me to when I was very young. Here's a live performance from when MTV actually played music!
Finally, my own original song is called "Fairy and the 'Fly". It is a tragic fairy-tale to music and so the lyrics are quite important. Let me provide those to you now:
Let me tell you a story, I wonder if you know
About a fairy family, who lived a long time ago
Father was a rich man, mother was covered in gold
Daughter, she was so gorgeous, her eyes cut deep down in your soul...
A band of trolls came into the forest, on a night that was bitterly cold
They'd heard of the fairy family, they'd heard of all of the gold
That night they sprang into action, that night there was blood to be spilled
Though father, he begged them for mercy, both he and fairy mother were killed...
And as for fairy daughter, the trolls did terrible things
They abandoned her in a swamp, after tearing off both of her wings
With a bleeding back she fainted, she was certain that she would soon die
But she woke up to find herself in the house of a kind dragonfly
Dragonfly said "I'll give you food, and I'll worship you all of my life"
"Fairy daughter you are so pretty, won't you please be my wife?"
"But you're an ugly beast!" said the daughter, "and I don't care for all of your things"
"Never again will I truly be happy, until I have a new pair of wings!"
The next morning she found the 'fly, had hung himself with spider's thread
And through the tears in her eyes fairy daughter saw that her saviour was really dead
He'd left a note explaining how because they'd never exchange any rings
He'd killed himself, now with a knife and a spell, she could help herself to his wings
Well you're my fairy daughter
And I'm your dragonfly
Because you would not love me
I hang my head and I... I cry...
Thank you so much for listening and see you next week!

Suicide is a heartbreaking thing.
I love your original song cover 🥰🥰💞🎶
You have a wonderful voice , with magic fingers.
Blessings
Thank you so much! Where are you writing from?
You are welcome.
Nigeria
You know, you sent me the fairy and the fly via email, in 2010 I think..... The 1st time we made contact, and spoke about our music and possibly doing something together. That song is so incredibly special. So moving and beautiful. Well done on this lovely post about a very difficult subject. 💕
Yes, I probably won't get another Fairy and the 'Fly type of song again, and at the same time I can only play it at certain quiet venues!
You played it at cottage club didn't you?
I did... Probably even more suited to the intimate atmosphere I need than Barleycorn? What do you think?
Definitely. I don't think I'd do meant 2 b at Barleycorn
Thats a beautiful rendition of the Butcher boy ,Ive never heard anyone cover it and never tried it myself .I really enjoyed hearing it here.
That last song...."The Fairy and The Fly" my oh my that is something special right there. I will need to listen to it again a few times for it to fully sink in I think , that's pure fairy-tale folk song magic right there.
Just as a wee bit of musical history .The Clancys and Tommy Makem did eventually get to act ,after they got famous from their music a lot of doors opened to them. One of my favourite short films is this one from the 1970s called "The Magic Sovereign" Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem play a couple of Irish con men trying to sell a magic sovereign to a rural Irish couple.
They were naturally talented men of the stage in all aspects :) I got the song "The Rambles Of Spring" from this short film.
Thank you so much! Fairy and the Fly was one of my first songs and came to me quite surprisingly quickly... it has hardly ever gone like that again since!
Ah, thanks for the information! Glad to know that the Clancy's and Tommy Makem got to act in the end, although I will still need to watch to be convinced that their acting could compete with their music... but maybe I will be convinced!
Liam at least was a naturally gifted actor , I got chills the first time I listened to this. Its part of Robert Emmets Epitaph from the dock. Emmet was an Irish republican rebel leader who was hanged for treason in 1803. Epitaph from the dock is the speech he gave to the court during his trial.
In this clip they have just finished a song and Liam breaks out this moving speech with impeccable delivery.
WOW, that sort of stirred up the Irish genes in ME even though we've been in South Africa for many a generation now! Apparently my grandfather from that side was a bit of a folk musician, and I think his grandfather might have actually come from Ireland! I will try find out exactly how long it's been since a John Dick was born in Ireland - and whether some music-loving went up that family tree!
WOW, what a voice. And I envy every guitar player that can also sing, seriously. I don't do it because I can not.
That being said, I enjoyed your video so much, I turned up the volume. Which caused my family afterwards to ask me since when I started singing. After an explanation I was asked to pass along the compliment 😉
Thank you for introducing me to Silverchair, haven't heard them before but I will engage into that further. And you did a great job covering that with an acoustic!
OMG, your original song is so beautiful both in music and lyrics. You are a very talented artist. I too hope to see you next week. Thank you very much for this video. You truly enriched my life today.

@jasperdick! Your Content Is Awesome so I just sent 1 $BBH (Bitcoin Backed Hive) to your account on behalf of @hannes-stoffel. (5/20)
Thank you so much for your kind words and the special gift - I haven't seen Bitcoin Backed Hive before!
Where do you come from, and do you share Music on HIVE? I am quite new here!
You are very welcome.
Came across BBH just a few days ago, relatively new to me as well.
I'm from Germany. I play the guitar (electric and acoustic) and a cheap E-Drum set but I don't share my own music on hive, don't have any I can call my own. I mostly play to backing tracks or turn up a live concert and jam along with it.
I started to share my love for music with #ttt this week though.
But who knows, the more I engage in Hive the more I feel comfortable sharing and one day I might even do so with my music but before that I need a bigger internet connection. 😅
Great performance, you have a powerful voice. Thank you very much for sharing with us this musical selection that tells us about suicide, actually this topic is devastating but it is something that as a society we must face....
Great job. Blessings 👏🏻💪🏻🤗🙂🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you so much! Yes, Suicide is devastating - and so is the realization that you can't really save people, and you can only support people who have the will to save themselves...
Where are you writing from?
From Venezuela
Ah amazing - I have met several people from Venezuela on HIVE and a lot have explained that the economy crashed there and it can be very hard to survive, and that HIVE can help quite a bit once you've got the hang of it!
It is certainly so, Hive is a great help and it is also an ecosystem that allows us to develop our own interests. I think that's what makes Hive enjoyable, that we can express ourselves from our own spaces.
Excellent voice and a superb guitar accompaniment... How much feeling you have put this time in your interpretation, wow!... Suicide is a complex and delicate subject... In my family we know what it is because we have lived it very closely... This interpretation of yours is very touching... Thank you for sharing... I send blessings for you and your family...

Thank you very much! I hope all is as well as it can be in Venezuela!

I very rarely get around to listening to the tunes until the Tuesday or Wednesday following them getting posted, but after listening to your anti-war set and really liking it, I had to have a little sneak listen. Suicide is not an easy subject to talk about and you did it with great sincerity, openness and kindness of spirit here. I have lost three friends to suicide here in the West of Ireland over the years, and many others who I knew, so I have seen the pain and suffering that surrounds it, as well as the pain and suffering the precedes it.
Well done and doing the other songs justice and fine artists they were and you did them very well, but my favorite in the set is the Fairy and the Fly. It is tragic, yet beautiful at the same time and musically it is just brilliant.
I must say it is a really great to have you joining us on ThreeTuneTuesday and long may it last, I'm already looking forward to next week's set.
Hello! Yes, a very tough theme. I shared a cover of "How to Save a Life" recently which made me remember that all of these songs also go there and challenge me. I can often fall back into "rescuer" mode and it doesn't help knowing that you can lose people from this world entirely... But I can't save people until they save themselves and only need a bit of support anyway...
Fairy and the Fly was one of my first original songs and flowed out of me and onto the page very easily and quickly... I still don't know why.
I'm also looking forward to next week! There's options as to which theme I choose next!
Amazing @jasperdick Fair play. An Irish one to start with as well. yup!
