A getaway to Santiago de Compostela, Spain...

Hello friends of weekend's experience, today I bring you another story of my TBT, when a few years ago my husband and I started the pilgrimage (getaway) to Santiago de Compostela, from day zero we visited Sarria a Spanish town in the province of Lugo, in the autonomous community of Galicia.

It was the first place we visited, that's where we started our pilgrimage, a beautiful medieval town, full of history, art, gastronomy and the best climate.

On day 1, we did the French way, when we started the camino to Santiago from Sarria, 114 km separated us from Santiago. The first stage of the pilgrimage is in Sarria to Portomarin it was 22, kilometers.

The Camino de Santiago, a world heritage site since 1883, is one of the most important historical pilgrimage routes in Europe. Portomarin, belongs to Galicia, is a town that preserves a medieval bridge over the Miño River, and is known for its long staircase.

The stage that we traveled on day 2 from Portomarín to Palas de Rei, was 25.1 km, this Jacobean route or Camino de Santiago, is the route that pilgrims follow to venerate the tomb of the apostle Santiago in Compostela.

At this stage of my life, I still have some photographic paper saved in my album, but the most beautiful and natural landscapes are still fresh in my memory.

Palas de Rei has an extensive artistic heritage that reflects the stately past (Ladies and Gentlemen) of those lands, as it preserves remains of fortresses, towers, castles, as well as several periods and emblazoned (ostentatious) houses of the time.

Day 3 was the stage from Palas de Rei to Arzúa (29 km). It was one of the most difficult stages, but the beautiful landscapes make up for everything. The medieval town of Melide known for its gastronomy, including the Volainderas we tasted them in Alongos. After this delicious meal we arrived in Arzúa, a Spanish municipality located in the south-eastern part of the province of La Coruña, calls itself the "land of cheese".

Stage 4 from Arzúa to O Pedrouzo (19.3 Km).

The yellow arrow and the scallop next to it... the historic scallop or shell, which was carried as a prize by the pilgrims returning to their homes. Both symbolize the route today. One of the most international symbols of the Camino de Santiago is the yellow arrow, painted with a brush on roads, houses, fences or trees, which indicate the route to follow.

The milestones or milestones are blocks of stone and concrete that can be found at different points along the Way, and that indicate how many kilometers are left to reach Santiago de Compostela.

The most beautiful landscapes of the whole tour, simply spectacular

Day 5

The last Stage, the 5 from O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela (19.1 Km)

Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the Galicia region, in the northwest of Spain. It is known as the culmination of the pilgrimage route of the Camino de Santiago and is supposed to be the site where the remains of the Apostle Santiago lie. These are said to be located in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, consecrated in 1211, whose elaborate stone-carved facades open onto large squares within the medieval walls of the ancient city.

Along the way, we find different symbols that become own of the way 🙏🏻

  • The shell or scallop. ...
  • Yellow arrow. ...
  • Lighthouse of La Berenguela. ...
  • Staff or pilgrim's staff. ...
  • Pumpkin. ...
  • Botafumeiro. ...
  • Holy Door. ...

Once the journey is completed, it remains to breathe an air of satisfaction and inner peace, with the firm conviction of wanting to return and repeat this experience again, hopefully it will be possible by 2025.

The return of this fabulous experience... I loved Spain, I loved what I lived, I loved the landscapes, I loved the food, I loved the wines, I loved the cheeses, I loved the fortune of experiencing it... my heart full of gratitude.

Janitze.
