This is my entry for The Ink Well Prompt #100: To Create
It was past 2 a.m. and still Dr. Jones continued to analyze the H19N50 RNA samples, for him time had ceased to have any meaning.
The smell of formaldehyde and other chemicals had become habitual, and the fluorescent lights were never turned off, which was why he lost track of time, he never knew if it was day or night.
Hundreds of test tubes were still doing their dance inside the sample analyzer. Finally, the analyzer stopped once again.
Dr. Julius dragged all the flasks, test tubes, and other glassware resting on the adjoining counter, tossing them to the floor.
"Damn it!" - Dr. Julius shouted angrily.
Dr. Jones was unmoved by Dr. Julius' outbursts of fury, they had become constant by now at the bad news they received.
"Do you have any hope that we will find the perfect sequence?"
"Can we do anything more than we do?" bounced Dr. Jones.
"Creating a vaccine is not easy even with the advanced technology at the Teshrak Institute facility here in New Zealand," Dr. Jones sighed in reply.
He rose from his chair heedless of Dr. Julius' expletives and pulled out the sample trays and dumped them into the sink.
"Do you know that 50% of humanity has been devastated in just 6 months?"
Dr. Jones gritted his teeth but still continued his work.
"At the rate we're going, no matter how much we discover something, there will be no one to supply the cure to."
"Tell me something I don't know," Dr. Jones replied taking a new tray of samples.
Soon hesitant footsteps were heard as if trying to avoid interrupting the work.
Erika, Dr. Jones' assistant, was bringing a fresh pot of hot coffee for the researchers.
She tapped her knuckles on the glass separating them and signaled over her wrist that it was time to rest.
Dr. Julius rose from his chair and headed down the decontamination hallway.
"Aren't you coming?" he asked
"After this last batch I'll join you," Dr. Jones replied.
As usual, Dr. Julius entered the decontamination chamber, pressed the activation button and a series of pressurized gases gave him a bath over his hazmat suit.
Outside, Erika waited with a steaming cup of coffee.
Dr. Julius appreciated the gesture and sat for a while as he enjoyed the warmth of the brew in his throat.
His back was to the protective glass that separated him from Dr. Jones when a green light reflected on the tiles of the adjoining wall.
Erika, dropping the cup of coffee she was holding for Dr. Jones, her eyes moistened.
Dr. Julius couldn't believe it, a large number of ninety-nine, all green, stood out on Dr. Jones' monitor.
"The son of a bitch did it," he exclaimed under his breath.
Erika ran to the intercom.
"Dr. Jones, do my eyes deceive me?" she cried out excitedly.
"No, they don't," he replied
"Apparently, it's clear that we will be able to create a vaccine," Dr. Jones added with a hint of a smile.
"That's good news, I admit; however, we need to do more tests and see what side effects it might have on human life."
Dr. Jones kept his brow furrowed, but Erika couldn't help but smile and cry at the same time.
This finding meant much more than hope, it meant no more deaths.
In a jiffy, Dr. Julius put on his biological protection suit and went back into the lab.
It was 8am and both doctors were still testing the results. After having checked the obtained sequence more than 10 times, Dr. Julius was satisfied.
"Cheer up my friend," said Dr. Julius, patting Dr. Jones on the back.
The latter still maintained his frown.
"It is still too early to alert the authorities."
"That's correct," Dr. Julius replied.
"I'm sure the pharmaceutical companies will give the fortune to get their hands on this sequence," he said in a completely different accent than he had.
Dr. Jones shot a fleeting glance at Dr. Julius, but Dr. Julius had already delivered a blow to the back of his head, knocking him down along with the sample tray. The tubes immediately shattered, cutting through his hazmat suit.
Julius ignored what happened, he was in too much of a hurry to record the sequence found on a flash drive.
Immediately, the lab alarms went off, a red light flooded the cubicle and an automated voice began broadcasting a message:
"Biohazard alert, take precautionary measures."
"I'm so sorry, buddy," Julius exclaimed.
By the time the lab's protection systems were running, Dr. Julius had already exited the decontamination corridor.
Alerted by the alarm, Erika ran into the lab, glanced into the lab, and was distracted by seeing Dr. Jones' body on the floor. Julius delivered another blow to the back of the girl's head, knocking her unconscious on the floor, and fled the scene.
Julius activated a communicator and received orders to evacuate and head to specific coordinates. Another message arrived on his communicator warning that in a short time, the facility would be destroyed by stealth aircraft.
Dr. Jones opened his eyes, the red lights were still on and the loudspeaker kept repeating the alert message.
He soon realized what had happened when he felt the burning in his arm.
Erika's voice came over the intercom.
"Harold! Harold, are you all right?" she kept repeating in desperation.
Dr. Jones nodded, raising his arm.
Erika's eyes dilated when they saw the tear in the suit. This was the end.
Dr. Jones stood up as quickly as possible and typed some commands on the analyzer console.
The computer began to synthesize a sample of the vaccine and then poured it into a set of capsules. Harold grabbed a vaccine dispenser and pocketed as many capsules as he could.
Once outside the lab, Harold asked for Dr. Julius, nevertheless, Erika was unaware of his whereabouts.
Erika bit her lips in anguish.
"We must leave the facility, it is likely that Dr. Julius has been working for criminal organizations."
Fortunately, Erika and Harold managed to escape in a small boat before the aircraft wiped out the facility. However, their lives were compromised as they were contaminated.
Dr. Jones placed one of the capsules in the vaccine dispenser.
There was no other way out, they had to inoculate themselves with the vaccine even though it had not yet been tested on humans.
"I must warn you that I don't know what effects the vaccine will have," Harold said with concern.
"Time will tell," Erika replied.
They broadcast a distress message over the radio and sailed ashore for three days.
At dawn, Erika cried out in exasperation.
"I can't see!"
Harold had lost his sight as well.
"It was the vaccine, it's probably a temporary side effect," Harold replied calmly.
He lied.
A chill ran down his back. He was sure that humanity would have to pay a heavy price to avoid extinction. There was no other way in the short time remaining. The lives of millions would be radically changed but they would still be alive.

“¿No vienes?”, preguntó
“¡Dr. Jones!
“¡No puedo ver!”
