Apocalyptic Homesteading (Day 685)

Hello Everyone!

Fair autumn weather, Tacky boot repairs, Raking the leaves, Making leaf piles & An upcoming writing break!

I am off to a slow start this morning after being up later than usual last night chatting with an old gaming buddy. Which is fine and all because the conversation was awesome and I think that I helped them have a wonderful evening to boot so no complaints there! Considering they also tend to hermit away I suspect they appreciate the value of having other folks to talk to from time to time.

Upon going outdoors this morning it was hard not to notice both the chill to the air and the vast amount of leaves that have begun piling up around the shelter site. It was a bit confusing because it was so dark out there that it took my sleepy brain a minute to figure out that my clock was not wrong and what I was seeing is a bunch of overcast skies and gloomy fall weather!

Alright, it is now after sunset and having written nothing else today I best dive in here and see what emerges. Overall, it was not a super productive day or anything but I did at least make some good progress on getting a good portion of the leaves around the shelter site raked up.

Since the Barge cement that I repaired my boots with was still feeling tacky and not fully cured I decided not use them today. So... I did all the leaf raking with just my slip-on shoes and whoa did I have to be careful not to wind up with a bunch of debris getting in them while I worked! Morale of the story there is that I am way too accustomed to wearing my boots all the time.

It is worth mentioning that I think that the only reason that the Barge cement had not cured fully is because I applied it late in the day and then last night I had the boots stored in the solar shack and it was both chilly, overcast and humid throughout the evening and until almost noon today. In other words I think that had I done the repairs early in the day and then let the boots sit overnight the adhesive would have had plenty of time to cure regardless of the conditions.

As far as the leaves go, instead of hauling all of them that I raked up today to the compost... I did what I never recommend doing in snake country which is making piles of the leaves around the dog yard to be dealt with later. To be clear here by 'later' I mean first thing tomorrow when I can get my boots on and get them scooped up and hauled to the compost.

Eventually the weather cleared up late in the afternoon and the sun actually came out so that was rather nice because all the overcast gloomy weather sure was getting a bit tiresome. Although I briefly considered having a fire in the fire-pit the wind never died down enough to do it safely... so in short the fall weather was not 'perfect' but it was close!

On a different note. I think that I am going to take a break from the writing (or at least the publishing) for a week or two here in another few days. Of course if something comes up that drives me back to writing (to help me cope) I will assuredly do so but for now I just want to take a nice break and do some much needed re-grouping.

Per usual on my writing breaks I will be doing some online gaming with my gaming buddies and want to tune pretty much everything else out in the process. I will assuredly be doing my routine chores and continuing to pack things down... but overall... a little escapism would do my mind a heck of a lot of good right now!

Without getting into things too much on that topic I do want to express that 'mentally' I have been doing alright even though I have fallen back into bingeing out on the news way more than what is probably healthy for me. To be clear, that particular behavior is one of the things that I not only want to 'escape' from for a bit but also get out of the habit of doing... yet again!

It is not so much that the news itself is not significant at this juncture in history... but because I need to take about three steps back from it all mentally so I can find out what I really think about it. I would not go so far as to say I am overloaded by it all but I do sense that I am close to being overloaded!

Mainly though, I am doing 'the gaming thing' for my usual reasons like interacting with other people, having a social life and just doing something for the pure enjoyment/entertainment/fun of doing it! Honestly, I know my life has way too little of those things so it is no surprise that I tend to 'give it my all' a few times a year when I do have them in my life.

Anyway, we will see how all that jazz turns out and just how much 'fun' I actually have and for how long I have it! I know the temptation to truly binge out on the gaming will be strong but alas I have too much that needs done and way too much to figure out in regards to my life's trajectory.

Hopefully spending some time with my gaming buddies will assist with that last bit so we will see how that goes. There is much to be said about spending a protracted period of time around good folks... but do not worry I will not be saying all the 'much to be said' part in this entry because it is already growing late and I need to wrap this all up and get on with the editing and posting.

I hope that everyone is doing well and has a nice day/night.

It was a rather pretty day once the skies cleared up!
