Shìná - A movie that exposes the dark realities of society

This is another interesting movie to talk about. The movie, Shìná is a reality of the happenings in our present-day society. A society whose citizens have been grouped into three categories; the high and mighty who would always think they are untouchable and are in control of the affairs of the state and country at large, the poor masses who just want their voices to be heard and their rights respected, and finally those who are supposed to serve and defend the citizens but have been bought over because of greed, power and connections, by those in authority.

Timini Egbuson who played the character Shìná happens to be one of the best actors, he sure knows how to act his part so well, I have watched a couple of his movies and I must say he is good at his acting skills. So in this movie, Shìná is faced with a big financial challenge after his Grandma falls ill and is diagnosed with polyp disease.

A colon polyp disease is usually associated with those who are Fifty (50) years of age and above, or those who are overweight, Polyps are small clump of cells that forms on the lining of the colon ( large intestine) and symptoms may include; abdominal pain, change in coloration of stool, constipation or diarrhea, and bleeding from the rectum. Sometimes Polyps may be cancerous, that is they may spread and affect other areas of the body.

As a taxi man, Shìná was to make an initial deposit of a million naira before the surgery could commence on his Grandma, against all odds he was able to raise close to the amount requested but fate took a different turn, when some policemen began to harass him, all in the name of doing their job.

The attitude of some security personnel in the country can be quite annoying and unprofessional, sometimes even when you have all the necessary documents needed, they are still not satisfied, and when you show them that you know your rights as a citizen of the country, they frustrate you and drag you into unnecessary stress. How is it that some security personnel do not understand what a life-and-death situation means? They are always looking for tips and bribes. It is just a terrible experience when you encounter them.

Shìná had a dark past; a past he promised his grandmother not to return to, he had been a member of a cult group in school and, Bamidele Bankole ( Akin Lewis ) was also a member of not a pioneer of the same cult group. Shìná had to make a deal with Chief Bamidele, he had to witness the murder of Mr. Victor Osarentin; who happened to be the fiance of the doctor handling his grandmother's case, and, Mrs Ali Atanda; a politician who was contesting for the position of the Governor in the state.

Shìná made this deal without knowing what was involved in it, he only wanted to save his friend's family; Ugo, and his grandmother. He didn't know making that deal would be breaking his promise to his mother.

This shows how desperate, evil, and heartless some of our politicians can be, chief Bamidele Bankole only wanted to terminate the life of Mrs. Ali Atanda, because elections were fast approaching and she was greatly loved by the masses, she had their votes and support and so she was a challenge and a threat to the likes of Chief Bamidele.

Unfortunately, Politics have become so dirty that instead of using the privilege to serve the people, it becomes an opportunity for the politicians to serve themselves, it has become so attractive and enticing that they have become greedy and nonchalant towards the concern of the masses. Those who have the right intentions and vision of service are never allowed to do so; they or their families are either endangered, assassinated, or set up.

Ugo is another character I would like to talk about, he was a friend to Shìná and was into armed robbery, he endangered the life of his family members and that of Shìná when he couldn't pay his commission to Chief Bamidele and his henchmen.

Grandma had warned Shìná about him but it was only a matter of time for his true identity to be revealed. Shìná did not know about his armed robbery activities and had to strike a deal with Chief Bamidele to save the lives of Ugo's pregnant wife and children.

Although, after discovering the true identity of Ugo and how he had put all their lives at risk, Shìná cut ties with him but he came through and saved Shìná when Chief Bamidele had made arrangements to eliminate his life; his assassin disguising himself as a detective. Although Ugo, was wrong he got a second chance to right his wrong.

Speaking up and saying the truth takes great courage, if the good people keep being quiet, evil continues to prevail, most at times speaking up may endanger or cost you your existence but let us learn to always do the right thing; this was what Shìná did after breaking his promise, he spoke up and justice was served.
