Family Day - Celebrating individual differences & keeping traditions alive

The one thing about having a family day is the fact that you can't stay away even if you want to. It gets worse having a family day on the same day as your neighbor's family day. parents have an interesting way of making life very difficult for their kids, after ALL, both families have, without the consent of their kids, agreed to celebrate family day together.

Returning to Brooklyn from the States, Black walked through the familiar neighborhood that brought a sense of nostalgia, as much as he loved life in the States, it wasn't to be compared with Brooklyn. If anything, groceries were cheaper there. prices of groceries in the States pretty much were a rip-off, he purchased broccolis for two dollars and five cents, ridiculous!

Black wondered if he was going home to a full house. Four family day gatherings and his siblings had proven to be the extremely tardy sort, no charges there as his neighbor's kids had proven to be the same sort as his siblings. Black was a child of the Thompson family, their family day was held on the day of his parents' marriage anniversary.

A beautiful thing it was really, but having his neighbors, the Coulsons' celebrating their family day on the same day took the joy out of it in his opinion. It was simply too coincidental he couldn't bring himself to appreciate it much. His parents of course didn't share the same sentiments, and neither did the Coulsons'.

Black and his siblings had nothing against his neighbors or their kids, they all were pretty much adults living their independent lives, but he just didn't fancy sharing family day with others that weren't his family. One would think his relatives would be a part of the celebration, but the high cost of transportation, and the price of groceries needed to make a meal for the whole family had made the Thompsons put a little change in the family day, they celebrated with their relatives on their 16-inch plasma wide screen over a video call. He honestly loved it this way, if only the Coulsons weren't in the picture.

Stepping on the porch, Black could hear the sounds of festivities inside, the dings of spoons on plates, and booming laughter, it put a smile on his face as he rang the doorbell.

"Black!! Look at you, you're so buff!"

"I have been hitting the gym Ma, you look yourself too".

A wide grin adorned Black's face as he hugged his mother tightly, lifting her off her feet and spinning her around on the porch.

"Put me down young man", Elena Thompson, his mother ordered between giggles.

"Is that Black?" A booming voice echoed from inside, Black spotted his father carrying a few plates as he walked into the living room, an amused grin splitting his face.

"Aye Pa, it's me. You don't look a day older at all, have you got the secrets to remaining ever young Pa?"

"Of course I do, it's simple, marry a good woman!"

Both Black and Joseph Thompson burst into loud laughter as Elena wiggled out of his embrace whilst rolling her eyes. Black advanced to his father and gave him a hug. From the Kitchen, he heard movements and what seemed to be arguments.

Coulsons' kids, no doubt, Twins they were, but exceedingly troubling twins who seemed to wreak havoc anywhere as long as they were side by side. It seemed some things didn't change.

Black strode with his pa into the kitchen area, the sight which greeted him was one he thought he would have been used to by NOW, clearly though, he wasn't. Kane and Sophia Coulson were covered with dough and several food spices, looking very ready to be placed in the oven, Conner Coulson and his wife, Sarah were arranging the dining area, as his father joined them, setting the plates down.

"Hey, Mr. Coulson, Mrs Sarah, this economy ain't got nothing on y'all eh?" Black called out to them as he walked in, and he gave a nod to the twins.

"Black!! You looking beefy son, where's the scrawny kid from four years ago?" Conner Coulson called out in greeting whilst his wife gave a wave, both sporting wide smiles.

"I left him at the gym Mr. Coulson" Black responded as they both chuckled in good humor.

"I see your siblings aren't here yet", Sarah said with a slight smirk.

"Who's to blame? Cost of transportation maybe? Perhaps the gifts they wanted getting have gotten a hike in price, who knows?". Black couldn't help but laugh as Kane called from where he was mock wrestling his sister.

As much as family day was a headache to him, the smiles and laughter made it worth it, besides, there was more to come as the night was still young.
