Become a Barista for The Family
Festive Coffee
At first, I did not understand the term “Festive Coffee”, I thought this contest was about the experience of participating in a coffee festival (I have a lot of experience with that). Because I do not have good English literacy, I tried to translate the word through google translate. I got the answer, Festive Coffee is about coffee and celebration. I'm still a little confused, and to satisfy my curiosity, I tried to google what is Coffee Festive?.
Finally, I got a little enlightenment when I saw the festive coffee recipe article for Christmas and New Year's celebrations. I understand, Festive Coffee can be interpreted as a coffee menu that you usually enjoy or make when celebrating something with other people. I am a Muslim, I have no experience enjoying a cup of coffee to celebrate Christmas and when the New Year's holiday is my chance to take a vacation. But, since 2017 I have always been a barista when there is a celebration of Eid al-Fitr (a big holiday for Muslims) for my family, and I will share that story to participate in the Coffee Stories CONTEST: Festive Coffee.
As a drinker and coffee lover, I have a fairly complete coffee maker at my house. Such as Vietnam Drip, V60 Dripper, Mokapot, French Press, Kalita, or Flair (espresso manual maker). Besides that, I am also known by my family and friends because I have an Indonesian Arabica coffee bean business, and the effect is that when every Eid celebration I have to make special coffee dishes for each of my friends, relatives and family who visit my house.
As good coffee brewers, we have to see who will drink our drinks. Coffee is a drink that is generally enjoyed by adults, but I have turned coffee into a drink that is loved by everyone. I started the story from the first coffee I made for many people, I named this festive coffee is Kopmil.
Ice Kopmil
Kopmil stands for Kopi (coffee) and Milo (chocolate milk drink). This coffee drink is always billed and requested by all my friends and relatives (especially children and women), when they come to visit my house to celebrate Eid. The composition of this drink is using espresso coffee, sweetened condensed milk, milo and of course ice cubes. Every day before the celebration, I will work hard to make two liters of espresso for the base.
Uniquely, I make espresso using a manual tool, namely the Flair Espresso Maker. Fyi, one espresso using this tool produces 60 ml of espresso, meaning I have to make 34 espressos. That's the reason why my hands always get sore every Eid celebration. This drink tastes very sweet and delicious. I only made about 10 liters of Ice Kopmil during Eid and it probably didn't take long to be finished by all the guests and relatives who came to my house.
I got the idea to make this coffee drink while hanging out with my friends in Padang City when I was still in college. In that era, we had a hangout/cafe that sold fried rice and ice milo. At that time, we wanted to stay up late to watch live football broadcasts (in Indonesia, some football league broadcasts aired at midnight), my friend was very sleepy trying to mix half a cup of coffee without sugar with ice milo to prevent sleepiness, and it turned out that the two drinks were mixing it makes for a very good taste. We all imitate what is made. I tried to make a few changes and tweaks to make a very good ice kopmil. Therefore, every time I make this drink, I will always remember the moments and memories when I was in college.
Natural Arabica V60 Specialy Coffee
I don't just make one coffee menu during Eid celebrations. I usually make two coffee menus to satisfy everyone who comes to my house. The second coffee menu that I always make is a coffee drink that I brew manually using the V60 technique and tool.
For special days, I always brew Arabica coffee beans with a natural process. Two Arabica coffee beans that I often use to make coffee are Natural Sipirok Arabica or Natural Gayo Arabica. This coffee bean has a unique taste, because it has a sweet, fruity taste and a very balanced sour taste on the tongue.
I specialize this coffee for my guests who like coffee and coffee drinkers, usually they are my friends (as well as customers) who I have "poisoned" with specialty coffee beans. Unlike the Ice Kopmil, to make this coffee I will brew it directly in front of my guests. Sometimes, there are some lay people who try my brewing coffee and are surprised when they see the color of the coffee water is like tea and the taste is not bitter.
Okay, maybe this is my little story about my duty every Eid day, which is to make coffee that can be enjoyed and liked by everyone to make the festive atmosphere more festive and intimate. Because as people say, Good Coffee Makes Good Mood.
Call me Isdarmady, because I have a full name that is very long, namely Isdarmady Syahputra Ritonga. I am a head of the family who work as Farmers Vegetables Hydroponic and Consultant Hydroponics, sometimes I also sell coffee from various regions in Indonesia.
