Delilah, Love Song for a Cat (Esp/ Eng)

Saludos queridos amigos y amigas de esta gran colmena, por aquí retomando el contacto luego de haber batallado contra el Covid-19, por suerte ya estamos de salida y en pie.

No quería dejar pasar por alto el Caturday de esta semana y se me antojó compartir con ustedes una bellísima canción escrita por Freddy Mercury, cantante del grupo Queen, para su amada gata Delilah.

El pasado 24 de noviembre se cumplieron 30 años de la desaparición física de este inigualable artista. Y si, lo admito, soy muy Queen fan y súper Mercury fan. Es por esto que en homenaje a su vida quise compartir con ustedes un poco de la faceta “cat lover” de Freddy Mercury, con la que me siento identificada y que quedó expresada tan tiernamente en esa canción.

Para los que no lo sabían, al final de su vida, Mercury llegó a tener 9 gatos, a los que trataba como reyes. Eran, literalmente, dueños de Garden Lodge, la mansión de Mercury en Londres, pero lo más lindo de esta historia es que excepto por Tiffany (una gata Himalaya comprada por su expareja y Amiga Mary Austin) todos sus gatos eran recogidos de la calle o de un refugio para animales, lo que es un indicio de su gran corazón.

I didn't want to miss this week's Caturday and I felt like sharing with you a beautiful song written by Freddy Mercury, singer of the band Queen, for his beloved cat Delilah.

Last November 24th was the 30th anniversary of the physical disappearance of this incomparable artist. And yes, I admit it, I am a very Queen fan and a super Mercury fan. That's why in tribute to his life I wanted to share with you a little of Freddy Mercury's "cat lover" side, with which I feel identified and which was expressed so tenderly in that song.

For those who didn't know, at the end of his life, Mercury had 9 cats, whom he treated like kings. They literally owned Garden Lodge, Mercury's mansion in London, but the beauty of this story is that except for Tiffany (a Himalayan cat bought by his ex-partner and friend Mary Austin) all his cats were picked up from the street or from an animal shelter, which is an indication of his big heart.

Otra curiosidad del amor de Freddy Mercury por los gatos es que su primer disco grabado en solitario, Mr. Bad Guy (1985), fue dedicado a sus gatos … “A mi gato Jerry —también Tom, Oscar, Tiffany y a todos los amantes de los gatos en todo el universo-”. ¿No les parece esto una ternura total?

Tal era el amor por sus amigos felinos que se hizo confeccionar un chaleco en el que aparecen dibujados sus gatos. Este mismo chaleco es el que Mercury utilizó cuando grabó lo que sería su último video (de la canción “These are the days of our lives”) Momento muy emotivo, ya que el artista se encontraba muy deteriorado de salud debido al VIH.

Another curiosity of Freddy Mercury's love for cats is that his first solo album, Mr. Bad Guy (1985), was dedicated to his cats ... "To my cat Jerry - also Tom, Oscar, Tiffany and all the cat lovers in the whole universe". Doesn't this strike you as utter tenderness?

Such was his love for his feline friends that he had a vest made with his cats drawn on it. This same vest is the one Mercury used when he recorded what would be his last video (of the song "These are the days of our lives"). It was a very emotional moment, since the artist was in very poor health due to HIV.

Al final de su vida llegó a tener nueve gatos viviendo en su casa, Tom, Jerry, Oscar, Tiffany, Goliath, Miko, Romeo, Lily y Delilah. Pero de todos, su gran amor era Dalilah, a la que consideraba la verdadera reina de la casa, tal era su amor por esa minina que le compuso una hermosa canción.

La canción lleva el nombre de la gata, fue compuesta por Mercury e interpretada magistralmente por el grupo Queen en el álbum Innuendo (1991), su último disco. Cuenta con unos arreglos de teclado y piano que hacen de esta pieza musical una rareza. Su melodía es alegre y tierna sin perder su rock. Tal vez no sea uno de los grandes éxitos de la agrupación británica, pero en ella destaca un solo de guitarra genial en el que Brian May literalmente hace maullar a La Red Special (su poderosa guitarra).

At the end of his life he had nine cats living in his house, Tom, Jerry, Oscar, Tiffany, Goliath, Miko, Romeo, Lily and Delilah. But of all of them, his great love was Dalilah, whom he considered the true queen of the house, such was his love for this kitty that he composed a beautiful song for her.

The song is named after the cat, was composed by Mercury and masterfully interpreted by the group Queen in the album Innuendo (1991), their last album. It features keyboard and piano arrangements that make this piece of music a rarity. Its melody is cheerful and tender without losing its rock. It may not be one of the greatest hits of the British group, but it features a great guitar solo in which Brian May literally makes La Red Special (his powerful guitar) meow.

Debo decir que no conocía esta canción, pero cuando la escuché la amé. Su letra sencilla y sin mayores recursos literarios, describe la personalidad de un felino como solo lo puede hacer alguien que es amante de los gatos. Yo me sentí conmovida e identificada con el sentimiento de amor que transmite por su amiga felina y la alegría que le produce su compañía. Quién ha tenido y ha amado a un gato sabe de lo que Freddy habla cuando dice:

Refiriéndose a la capacidad que tienen los gatos de sanarnos y brindarnos felicidad con solo ser ellos. Y otros versos más adelante, Freddy nos recuerda eso que sabemos todos los que tenemos a un gato de compañía, y es que aunque creemos que somos sus “dueños” la verdad es que son ellos los amos. Y así lo dice:

I must say that I didn't know this song, but when I heard it I loved it. Its simple lyrics, without major literary resources, describe the personality of a feline as only someone who is a cat lover can do. I felt moved and identified with the feeling of love that she transmits for her feline friend and the joy that her company brings her. Who has owned and loved a cat knows what Freddy is talking about when he says:

"You make me smile when I'm just about to cry
You bring me hope, you make me laugh, and I like it
You get away with murder so innocent
But when you throw a moody
You're all claws and you bite..."

Referring to the ability cats have to heal us and bring us happiness just by being them. And a few verses later, Freddy reminds us of what all of us who have a pet cat know, and that is that although we believe we are their "owners" the truth is that they are their masters. And so he says:

"You take over my house and home
You even try to answer my telephone
Delilah, you're the apple of my eye"
