Bassano del Grappa: A Day in a Charming Italian Town
Hello friends, how was your weekend?
I can say that mine went great here in my part of Italy. It continues to be hot, and yesterday we reached temperatures as high as 30 degrees, which is quite unusual for this time of year. We are definitely 5-6 degrees above the average temperatures for this period. While on one hand, this is positive as it allows us to enjoy this warm weather, on the other hand, it is concerning, and it highlights how climate change is affecting our seasonal temperatures. We are certainly heading towards warmer winters.
On Sunday, I honestly didn't know exactly where to go, but then a friend of mine suggested going to Bassano del Grappa, a beautiful city located in the province of Vicenza. It's a well-known tourist destination, primarily famous for the grappa liquor made from grape pomace, which also gives the city its name. Grappa is one of the most famous specialties you can taste in this place, but honestly, I'm not much of a grappa enthusiast. For example, in this part of Italy, it's common to add a shot of grappa to your coffee, but I usually prefer my coffee plain.
One of the other symbols of Bassano is the Alpini Bridge, a wooden bridge designed by the famous architect Andrea Palladio in 1569. It spans the Brenta River, and most people come here to see this iconic bridge, which is both distinctive and historically significant. There aren't too many specific activities to do in this place; the beauty lies in strolling through the city or along the Brenta River and admiring the surrounding landscape and the architectural structure of the town.
The bridge had been restored some time ago, and I hadn't seen this result yet, and I must say that a great job has been done, although unfortunately I still remember when I was there a few years ago, it was nice because on the bridge you could find street artists expressing their creativity through their music, but now it seems that everything is prohibited, even eating something.
There were quite a lot of people, and it took me almost an hour to find parking. It seems that, at least in Italy, people have become quite exuberant after the COVID situation, continuing to go out and spend money. I honestly don't know where they all find the money.
I thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed the photos I took. I didn't take too many because I wanted to savor the moment and relax. Still, I hope I conveyed the feelings and the pleasure of seeing this city. See you soon, and I hope to read about how you spent your weekend!
ps: I used a camera that I hadn't used in a long time, but I have to say that I wasn't satisfied with the photos, or maybe it's just me who isn't really capable of taking good photos.
