Un cordial saludo a todos, el día de hoy no vengo con una reseña sino con un artículo más con cara de Blog Personal, como se supone que parcialmente es mi contenido en realidad.

A cordial greeting to all, today I do not come with a review but with an article with a Personal Blog face, as it is supposed to be partially my content in reality.

Para los que no me conocen, soy un estudiante de cine de 22 años recién cumplidos que ha buscado sumergirse cada vez más en el mundo de las artes audiovisuales, mi interés en reseñar películas que veo viene mayormente de ahí, siendo una forma de dar práctica a mi análisis cinematográfico.

For those who don't know me, I'm a 22 year old film student who has sought to immerse himself more and more in the world of audiovisual arts, my interest in reviewing films I see comes mostly from there, being a way to give practice to my film analysis.

Sin embargo, por el distanciamiento que hubo entre mi universidad y yo tras la llegada de la cuarentena, mis planes de asumir el manto de director se fueron retrasando cada vez más, hasta que recientemente, mi padre @Ylich me propuso la idea de dirigir un proyecto audiovisual para acompañar su canción "Noches de Moscú" de su proyecto de salsa.

However, due to the estrangement between me and my university after the advent of quarantine, my plans to take on the mantle of director were increasingly delayed, until recently, my father @Ylich proposed me the idea of directing an audiovisual project to accompany his song "Noches de Moscú" from his salsa project.

La pre-producción

Pre-Production

Desde un inicio, mi padre me planteó la idea que tenía en mente, se trataba de un Visualizer que mostraría una sala de estar con una pareja compartiendo un tiempo juntos, desde un ángulo y en un espacio que nos permitiera jugar con la imagen mostrada.

From the beginning, my father told me the idea he had in mind, it was a Visualizer that would show a living room with a couple sharing time together, from an angle and in a space that would allow us to play with the image shown.

Ya con eso planteado, quedaba en mis manos amenizar ese tiempo compartido con acciones que transmitieran el afecto de ambos personajes, la confianza, el disfrute y la intimidad, sin exagerarla para dejar abierta la posibilidad de que se trate de una pareja de viejos amigos reencontrándose o amantes en una cita.

With that in mind, it was up to me to liven up that shared time with actions that conveyed the affection of both characters, trust, enjoyment and intimacy, without exaggerating it to leave open the possibility that it was a couple of old friends meeting again or lovers on a date.

A todo esto se sumaba una pregunta en mi cabeza ¿Cuál es la mejor forma de realizar un Visualizer que acompañará una canción de un género tan bailable como es la salsa? A medida que buscaba Visualizers, la mayoría parecía acompañar canciones de tono más lento y melancólico, como varios de Gorillaz por los que pasamos en nuestro recorrido.

In addition to all this, there was a question in my head: What is the best way to make a Visualizer that will accompany a song of such a danceable genre as salsa? As I searched for Visualizers, most of them seemed to accompany songs with a slower and more melancholic tone, like several of the Gorillaz's songs we went through on our journey.

Pasamos también por los álbumes de Bad Bunny, quien acompaña siempre sus discos con Visualizers temáticos y cada vez más producidos, sin embargo, nos encontrábamos nuevamente en una atmósfera más melancólica y lenta de lo que es la salsa.

We also went through the albums of Bad Bunny, who always accompanies his albums with thematic and each time more produced Visualizers, however, we were again in a more melancholic and slower atmosphere of what salsa is.

La referencia que consideré más confiable fue el disco "Cuando los Acéfalos Predominan" de la banda venezolana Rawayana, el cual está acompañado de Visualizers en su totalidad, y aún así, me encontré con que la mayoría de sus canciones apuntaban también a un tono menos movido que el estándar de la salsa.

The reference I considered most reliable was the album "Cuando los Acéfalos Predominan" by the Venezuelan band Rawayana, which is accompanied by Visualizers in its entirety, and yet, I found that most of their songs also pointed to a less up-tempo tone than the salsa standard.

En ese punto era difícil tener una referencia confiable, pues no encontraba ninguna que no chocara con la atmósfera animada de la salsa. Sin embargo, finalmente, un Visualizer sugerido por mi papá me dió una idea más clara de lo que debía buscar.

At that point it was difficult to have a reliable reference, as I couldn't find one that didn't clash with the lively atmosphere of the salsa. Finally, however, a Visualizer suggested by my dad gave me a clearer idea of what to look for.

El tema "Istanbul" de Danny Ocean me daba dos respuestas que necesitaba para la atmósfera del video. La primera es que el video no necesita ser igual de movido que la canción, pues puede centrarse en el sentimiento de la lírica y la presencia del cantante. La canción también apunta a un tono menos animado del que buscaba, pero me permitió visualizar la idea con mayor claridad. La segunda respuesta que obtuve era cuál debía ser la intención de la imagen, pues al tratarse de una imagen mayormente estática en un extenso plano secuencia, me di cuenta de que la toma que escogiera debía ser comparable a un cuadro o una fotografía para que captara la atención adecuada y no generara monotonía a lo largo de un rato.

The song "Istanbul" by Danny Ocean gave me two answers I needed for the atmosphere of the video. The first is that the video doesn't need to be as upbeat as the song, as it can focus on the feeling of the lyric and the singer's presence. The song also aims for a less upbeat tone than I was looking for, but it allowed me to visualize the idea more clearly. The second answer I got was what the intention of the image should be, since it is a mostly static image in a long sequence shot, I realized that the shot I chose should be comparable to a painting or a photograph in order to capture the right attention and not generate monotony over a period of time.

Así fue como pude visualizar la sala de estar con la pareja sentada como si de un cuadro se tratase. Las acciones debían ser esporádicas para que permitieran hacer más dinámica la situación, pero sin necesidad de colocarlas a lo largo de todo el mismo, de modo que la atención se enfoca principalmente en mi padre cantando su canción, rompiendo la cuarta pared mientras su conversación con la mujer continuaba.

This is how I was able to visualize the living room with the couple sitting as if it were a painting. The actions had to be sporadic in order to make the situation more dynamic, but without the need to place them throughout, so that the attention is focused mainly on my father singing his song, breaking the fourth wall while his conversation with the woman continued.

Filming night

Finalmente llegó la fecha que había cuadrado mi padre en su rol de productor. Para la locación teníamos la sala de estar de nuestra muy querida Pata Medina, quien nos ofreció apoyo al saber que necesitábamos una sala de estar que cumpliera con condiciones con las que ella justamente contaba. Mi tía @helyorsini también participó de forma activa en el rodaje, apoyándonos tanto en la parte creativa como en el rol de la producción. Finalmente, los protagonistas eran encarnados por mi papá y amiga Susana Chani, quien mi papá consideró una excelente opción para la mujer que le acompañaría y estuvo totalmente de acuerdo en participar.

Finally arrived the date that my father, in his role as producer, had set. For the location we had the living room of our beloved Pata Medina, who offered us support knowing that we needed a living room that met the conditions that she had. My aunt @helyorsini also participated actively in the shooting, supporting us both in the creative part and in the production role. Finally, the main characters were played by my dad and friend Susana Chani, who my dad considered an excellent choice for the woman who would accompany him and agreed to participate.

Como cualquier producción independiente realizada por un grupo pequeño, hubo distintos problemas que resolver durante la filmación. Para empezar, mi videocámara tiene un rango de visión muy limitado, y por falta de tiempo para hacer pruebas de cámara en la locación antes de la fecha se grabación, nos enteramos la misma noche de que la cámara no alcanzaba a cubrir todo el espacio que necesitábamos para la imagen, aún colocada en la ventana del set. Para este problema pensamos en todo tipo de soluciones, llegando incluso a pensar en sujetar la cámara con el trípode pegado con tirro a la reja de la ventana para así poder colocarla a mayor distancia todavía de la imagen, sin embargo, aún estirando el brazo fuera de la ventana con la cámara en mano, no llegaba todavía a cubrir toda la imagen.

Like any independent production by a small group, there were several issues to solve during the shoot. To begin with, my camcorder has a very limited range of vision, and due to lack of time to test the camera on location before the shooting date, we found out the same night that the camera could not cover all the space we needed for the image, even if it was placed in the window of the set. For this problem we thought of all kinds of solutions, even thinking of holding the camera with the tripod strapped to the window grill in order to place it even further away from the image, however, even stretching the arm out of the window with the camera in hand, it still did not cover the entire image.

En ese punto parecía no haber ninguna alternativa que nos permitiera mostrar la imagen completa, hasta que propuse una estrategia que nos permitiría continuar con la grabación: Cortar la imagen intencionalmente.

At that point there seemed to be no alternative that would allow us to show the full image, until I proposed a strategy that would allow us to continue with the recording: Intentionally cut the image.

Una idea que había surgido en una lluvia de ideas inicial y que nos había gustado, era la posibilidad de que los personajes no se vieran más que de las piernas hacia abajo, esta idea mutó y acabó por tener a los personajes cuerpo completo, sin embargo, dadas las condiciones vistas, surgió la posibilidad de jugar con esa idea.

An idea that had emerged in an initial brainstorming session and that we had liked, was the possibility that the characters would not be seen more than from the legs down, this idea mutated and ended up having the characters full body, however, given the conditions seen, the possibility of playing with that idea arose.

A medida que bajábamos más la cámara, más me iba gustando el resultado, la toma se me hacía más interesante que la cámara al nivel de los protagonistas y el sólo poder ver desde el torso hacia abajo cuando estaban de pie, le daba al video cierta originalidad.

The more we lowered the camera, the more I liked the result, the more interesting the shot became to me than the camera at the level of the protagonists and the fact that I could only see from the torso down when they were standing, gave the video a certain originality.

El resto de la grabación fue más sencillo de realizar, se realizaron varias tomas principalmente buscando que hubiera naturalidad de principio a fin pues se trataba de un plano secuencia y darle cortes por edición para combinar tomas iba a romper con todo su efecto.

The rest of the recording was easier to do, several takes were made mainly looking for naturalness from beginning to end because it was a sequence shot and giving cuts for editing to combine shots was going to break with all its effect.

Como dato curioso, uno de los gatos de nuestra afitriona, llamado Bowie en homenaje al cantante, llegó a entrar por su cuenta en una de las tomas y posarse frente a la cámara como si fuera parte del plan y todo. Esta toma se tuvo que descartar por distintos elementos que no resultaba, pero incluso llegamos a pensar en aprovecharla en el video.

As a curious fact, one of the cats of our hostess, named Bowie in homage to the singer, came to enter on its own in one of the shots and pose in front of the camera as if it were part of the plan and everything. This shot had to be discarded due to different elements that didn't work, but we even thought about using it in the video.

Una vez terminado el rodaje, fue enviado el material a nuestro gran amigo Juan Giraldez, otra mente importante detrás de este proyecto que planteó múltiples sugerencias e ideas que ayudaron a dar vida al video. Él se encargó de lleno de la parte de edición para así tener ya culminado el visualizer y finalmente estrenado el 17 de Marzo (Día de mi cumpleaños casualmente).

Once the filming was finished, the material was sent to our great friend Juan Giraldez, another important mind behind this project who made multiple suggestions and ideas that helped to give life to the video. He took full charge of the editing part to have the visualizer finished and finally released on March 17th (my birthday, coincidentally).

Como casi todo creador tras culminar su trabajo, noté una gran variedad de cosas de las que hubiera querido percatarme al momento de grabar, así como llegaron a mi mente un sinfín de cosas que pudiera haber hecho diferente. No obstante, estoy satisfecho con el resultado final y contento con la recepción que ha tenido, así como agradecido por la experiencia obtenida al haber sido parte de este proyecto.

Like most creators after finishing their work, I noticed a variety of things I would have liked to have noticed when recording, as well as a myriad of things that I could have done differently. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with the final result and happy with the reception it has received, as well as grateful for the experience of being part of this project.
