En el 2015, tras haber visto nuevamente a los Vengadores reunirse en "Avengers: Age of Ultron", viene el turno de incorporar otro nuevo superhéroe al creciente mundo del MCU, esta vez tratándose de Ant-Man, el superhéroe capaz de reducir su tamaño al tamaño de una hormiga.

In 2015, having once again seen the Avengers reunite in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it's the turn of another new superhero to join the growing world of the MCU, this time being Ant-Man, the superhero capable of shrinking to the size of an ant.

El filme en desarrollo

La película en solitario de Ant-Man estuvo en desarrollo desde los comienzos de Marvel Studios, desde que Iron Man y Hulk comenzaron a desarrollarse y todo el crossover de The Avengers era sólo una idea. Sin embargo, la fase de pre-producción presentó tantos retrasos que terminó quedando por fuera de la primera fase del MCU y reemplazados Ant-Man y La Avispa de sus roles como miembros fundadores de Los Vengadores por la Viuda Negra y Ojo de Halcón. Del mismo modo, al ser adquirida la compañía por Disney, se optó por elegir a otro portador del traje que no fuera Hank Pym por la oscuridad que conlleva su historia como alcohólico y como esposo violento, y así tener un protagonista que cumpliera mejor con el papel de héroe que buscaba la compañía, en este caso, el ladrón redimido Scott Lang.

Una vez que el proyecto comenzó a materializarse, Edgar Wright (Director de El Misterio de Soho, Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim Vs. El Mundo y la conocida "trilogía de Cornetto") asumió la dirección de la película, para eventualmente retirarse del proyecto por diferencias creativas con el equipo de Marvel, alegando que el estudio sólo buscaba tener su nombre en el proyecto, más que respetar su visión del filme. Finalmente la película acabó siendo dirigida por Peyton Reed, quien mantuvo en cierto grado el humor visual que tanto caracteriza a Wright, pero acatando también las peticiones de Marvel Studios.

Aunque me haya gustado mucho el resultado final de Ant-Man, debo decir que siempre he sentido intriga por saber cómo habría sido éste bajo la dirección de Edgar Wright, director cuyo estilo disfruto mucho.

The film in development

The Ant-Man solo film was in development since the early days of Marvel Studios, ever since Iron Man and Hulk began development and the whole The Avengers crossover was just an idea. However, the pre-production phase featured so many delays that it ended up being left out of the first phase of the MCU and replaced Ant-Man and The Wasp from their roles as founding members of The Avengers to Black Widow and Hawkeye. Similarly, when the company was acquired by Disney, it was decided to choose another costume wearer other than Hank Pym because of the darkness associated with his history as an alcoholic and as a violent husband, and thus have a protagonist who would better fulfill the hero role sought by the company, in this case, the redeemed thief Scott Lang.

Once the project began to materialize, Edgar Wright (Director of Last Night in Soho, Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and the well known "Cornetto trilogy") took over the direction of the film, eventually withdrawing from the project due to creative differences with the Marvel team, claiming that the studio was only looking to have his name on the project, rather than respecting his vision for the film. Ultimately the film ended up being directed by Peyton Reed, who maintained Wright's trademark visual humor to some degree, but also abided by the requests of Marvel Studios.

Although I liked the final result of Ant-Man, I must say that I have always been intrigued to know how it would have been under the direction of Edgar Wright, a director whose style I enjoy a lot.

La nueva comedia de Marvel

En Ant-Man nuevamente tenemos un filme donde predomina la comedia, esta vez en un humor más ligero y visual. El poder del traje para encoger a su portador da material para muchas situaciones cómicas, a la vez que la ingenuidad del protagonista y sus compañeros aportan mucha simpatía. Destaco de este modo el trabajo de Michael Peña como Luis, cuya personalidad aporta mucho al humor de la película, especialmente en sus escenas narrando acontecimientos como en la escena post-créditos mientras habla de su contacto con Sam Wilson (escena que de hecho, fue sacada del guión de Edgar Wright). Igualmente personajes como Cassie, Pym Hope o el Paxton (el policía) aportan mucho al encanto de esta película.

Momentos como la pelea de Scott contra El Halcón en la base de Los Vengadores y la pelea final contra el Yellow Jacket en la habitación de Cassie representan muchos momentos que combinan perfectamente la emoción de la acción, junto con el humor del filme.

The new Marvel comedy

In Ant-Man we once again have a film where comedy predominates, this time in a lighter and more visual humor. The power of the suit to shrink its wearer gives material for many comic situations, while the naivety of the protagonist and his companions bring a lot of sympathy. I highlight in this way the work of Michael Peña as Luis, whose personality contributes much to the humor of the film, especially in his scenes narrating events as in the post-credits scene while talking about his contact with Sam Wilson (scene that in fact, was taken from Edgar Wright's script). Likewise characters like Cassie, Pym Hope or Paxton (the cop) add a lot to the charm of this movie.

Moments like Scott's fight against The Falcon at The Avengers base and the final fight against the Yellow Jacket in Cassie's room represent many moments that perfectly combine the thrill of the action, along with the humor of the film.

La nueva pieza del MCU

Como es de esperarse en una película de esta franquicia, la historia de Ant-Man tiene conexiones bien marcadas con el resto del universo cinematográfico, con elementos como la relación entre Hank Pym y S.H.I.E.L.D., la presencia de Peggy Carter y Howard Stark (padre de Tony Stark), o como mencioné antes, incluso la base de los Vengadores como escenario para la pelea con el Halcón.

Aunque la película tiene bastantes referencias al resto de la franquicia, no llega a un nivel que yo considere aferrarse a ellas para ganar interés, sino más bien que la película aprovecha su conexión para hacer algo de humor al respecto.

The new piece of the MCU

As is to be expected in a film in this franchise, the story of Ant-Man has well-marked connections to the rest of the cinematic universe, with elements such as the relationship between Hank Pym and S.H.I.E.L.D., the presence of Peggy Carter and Howard Stark (father of Tony Stark), or as I mentioned before, even the Avengers base as the setting for the fight with the Falcon.

While the film has quite a few references to the rest of the franchise, it doesn't reach a level that I would consider clinging to them to gain interest, but rather that the film takes advantage of their connection to make some humor out of it.

En Conclusión

Ant-Man es una película que recuerdo con cariño, con un humor fresco y un carisma que lograron diferenciarla de sus predecesoras de la saga. Recuerdo que fue una de las pocas que no tuve la oportunidad de ver en el cine y disfruté tanto al verla que lamenté no haber podido ir (Fue la única película de Marvel Studios entre Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) y Avengers: Endgame (2019) que no ví en el cine).

In Conclusion

Ant-Man is a movie I remember fondly, with a fresh humor and charisma that managed to set it apart from its predecessors in the saga. I remember that it was one of the few that I didn't have the chance to watch in the theater and I enjoyed watching it so much that I regretted not being able to go (It was the only Marvel Studios movie between Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) that I didn't watch in the theater).
