Small but Memorable

Growing up in a family where it sorts of seems like you are always omitted from the vital celebrations happening in your household. My siblings were all thrown big parties after their child dedications in church, they all had their first-year birthday parties thrown for them and I know this because I see their baby pictures, I guess that’s what happens when you just land on planet Earth, right before finding your footing, your little sister makes her grand entrance and before you know it, you don’t get to enjoy certain privileges because the focus is shifted from you to your sister.

I haven’t really celebrated my birthday in a grand style since I was born, I have attended a lot of my friends’ birthday parties but none have attended mine sadly.

14th September 2021 history was made, and the narrative changed.

I often get gifts from well-wishers and cakes from crushes and boyfriends, but I haven’t really celebrated my birthday.

On that faithful day, I went to the office just like every normal day, the difference was that I was getting lots of calls and tons of text messages from my family, friends, and well-wishers, my phone was blowing up and my colleagues were hugging and smiling at me other than that it was supposed to be like every normal day.

As of 2021 I was new in the organization and I was literally the smallest back then, so most people then had a soft spot for me.

While I was still trying to start up my PC and get ready for the day’s work, I saw Adesuwa and Joyce walk into the office with a big cake, on impulse I asked;

“Adesuwa who else was born on 14th September with me in this office? I never knew I had a birthday mate here” while I was getting ready to join them to go sing and surprise whoever was the lucky 14th September celebrant, Adesuwa and Joyce started singing as they made their way to my table. I was shocked, “wait is this cake for me?” I asked dumbfounded but nobody gave me a reply as everyone present in the office was so engrossed in the birthday song they were singing for me.

"Was this planned?" I asked again but nobody seemed to pay attention to what I was saying.

While I stood there dumbfounded and trying to wrap my head around what was going on in my environment Joyce opened the cake and inscribed on it was “Happy Birthday Senior Corper”. They called me senior corper in the office as at that time, because back then I was still undergoing my National Youth Service Corp Program.

After the whole singing and dancing, I approached Adesuwa.
“Adesuwa why did you surprise me with a cake”, I asked her nicely because I couldn't still believe it.
“Nothing, I just like you,” she said sweetly.
