Make Up Vs Photography
In my opinion, Make Up Artists should not depend photographer shots to communicate or express skill, excellence or mastery.
If your work is that good, Snap your natural-unedited Before & After shots/videos from a smart phone, preferably an iPhone.
This way, any prospective client can see and examine all the details and confirm your creativity.
I say this because some MUA have made it a culture to hide unprofessional touches under photo-shoot filters and retouch.
Seriously, I see some of these photographer shots as unrealistic. Too smooth, too clean, too artificial and much edit, It takes away the human element and blinds your signature.
As a client, I would like to zoom in on your work and still be able to see all the details like the tiny pore spaces in the foundation, the powder brush stroke etc. All natural and human.
But in most cases, the photographer promotes his ace retouching skills, incidentally hiding your own creative skills.
Many of you are very good at your jobs but you lack confidence to present it naturally so photographers keep taking your shine. Not their fault.
I wouldn’t blame any photographer because I have seen cases where Make Up artist instructs the photographer to apply more retouch. 🤦♂️
While I am not against photo-shoot sessions for official releases. I would advise that you cultivate the habit of running natural unedited shoots to promote signature and originality.
Finally, Instruct your photographers to only apply mild retouches on your work, The primary aim of shooting is to promote a Makeup studio not Photo studio.
The video below is natural, shot from a phone. You can still see the powder strokes. It shows skill, signature and mastery.
