The caldén is a tree native to the province of La Pampa, in the center of Argentina, and because of its identity with the human and cultural values of the province it has been declared a provincial plant, and as such, a protected species.

This "status" has saved it from certain extinction as a result of excessive deforestation, which is a real calamity for the whole planet.

Monocultures or intensive crops such as soybeans and many cereals and oilseeds led many landowners to start deforesting without having an adequate forestation plan in hand, taking into account that this plant, like many others of its species, takes several years to develop.

This led to protect it with the status of provincial plant and species protected by law, so that its logging and marketing is prohibited throughout the national territory.

Historically the wood of the caldén has had a massive and traditional use as firewood for heating when natural gas had not yet arrived in La Pampa, poles, rods, beams, parquets that are the boards for floors, rustic kitchen furniture and various furniture such as tables and chairs, and various uses in the construction industry.

It is a very noble plant, since it does not require particular water care and survives without problems in sandy and arid soils and develops a harmonious and very beautiful crown that can reach up to 15 meters in diameter in the most mature specimens,

A century ago, the province of La Pampa was so full of caldenes that there were entire areas (hundreds of hectares) populated only by this species, giving rise to what came to be called "el caldenal" - that is, a place where there are many caldenes.

The indiscriminate logging and the monoculture of some cereals and oilseeds led to its near extinction in less than a century.

Greetings and thanks for commenting @momogrow.
