Pets that changed my life?
March 22 on #marchinleo and this one is a subject that I like to rant about. Animals. As a child, I had all kinds of pets. My dad liked to experiment too, and had a big garden at work, where he was growing rabbits, ermines, and other exotic pets. In the countryside, where my grandparents were living, we had cows, pigs, lambs, ducks, chickens, stray cats, a lot of them animals. I remember one brother of my maternal grandma even had pigeons, a lot of them. Pigeon casserole was the main meal when we visited him, in a communist era when meat was hard to find.
As for our little apartment, I started with fish, like in one first, and I bought a few others later. Not having a very big aquarium, and not being that good at it, they initially lived a short life. As plants were added, specialized food and a few sanitary fishes, the ones that clean the mess inside the ecosystem, their lives improved, and a couple of times they even had little ones, lots of them, only to eat them quite fast.

My brother and I, had a turtle, even a guinea pig at some moment. We had 2 little puppies, for a while, but when they went big, one was a Shar Pei of some sort, lovely when was little, but huge as an adult, ended up being adopted by a shepherd, in the mountains, as it was eating one bucket of food and a bit extra per day. The second dog was a German Shepherd, and we moved him to the countryside as we had a garden there. He ended up being poisoned by a neighbour, as it was making too much noise. His fault was barking when bears and wild boars were coming closer.
Cats, I had like 3 over the years, the first one was when we were just teenagers. A clever one that has some adventure of its own. He liked to annoy dad, was in between its legs when dad was coming back from work, almost learned chess, almost being the word, you will choose your colour, so you will say something like: You got whites, I got black, and the cat will jump on my black pieces taking them out of the chessboard. One fell from the ninth floor and broke both front legs, but survived, and for a while was moving on the back legs and the tail, like a kangaroo. The second one followed my adventures when I was living in Liverpool, and the third one, Freija, turned out to be a boy, as we gave it away when we moved to someone who had another female but it turned out that Freija was Frey, and we didn't know. They got a whole litter a month later.
All my pets shaped my understanding, and built a great bit of compassion, so, I am all pro about having pets as a child and teenager. Turtle is probably the best, it will still be here with your nephews and nieces.
All the best,
George
