Market Friday - Papa Zhu Non-halal Mini Market
Today I visited PapaZhu Mini Mart which is a gem opened in my neighbourhood selling pork products.
Why do I think this market is a GEM?💎
Because I live in a neighbourhood with greater proportion of Muslims, it is hard to find pork market here. The nearest pork market is at least 5 km away. There was one that I used to visit but that pork place has quite a bit of a crowd. So, I have been ordering pork online and have it delivered to me but it has to exceed a certain amount to enjoy free delivery.
Hence when my mum-in-law told me about PapaZhu which opens in my area, I was in disbelief. It is situated in one of the shoplots and I really love the shop a lot.
A. It is very very clean and well maintained.
I love the fact that it is new and clean. The products were arranged nicely into different categories.
And I always visit it at the time there was either only another customer besides me or me alone in the whole shop!!!
B. It offers a huge variety of products.
It really sells many many different types of food: cooked, uncooked, marinating sauces and all types of sauces, dried noodles, herbal packs and even roasted pork!
Of course they sell all kinds of pork cuts!
My latest discovery was them selling frozen chicken too. Before this I had bought fish dumplings that was supposedly sold far away from where I stay from them too. The other day, I bought five-spiced Chinese meat rolls too.
C. The workers and owners are very friendly.
I usually have not time to apportion my meat after I reach home. I just casually asked if they can help me pack my mimced pork into packs of 300g and they were okay to help me save the hassle.
Besides that they also will recommend anything that is priced cheaper than usual.
D. It sells its products at a very reasonable price.
Here is the pricelist I got from their
PapaZhu FB page as I forgot to snap photo of the price list display board.
Usually I get minced pork at RM13 at the shop I frequent before I discovered PapaZhu.
PapaZhu is officially my new favorite market to go to. The name is actually the Chinese translation of Papa which is dad, Zhu is pig in Chinese. The owner used to have the same frustration of getting pork in our area so he sourced out some suppliers and opens a pork market himself. What a good person in our neighbourhood and I am surely glad that the shop is probably just 5 minutes drive away from home. Just look at how big a bag of pork I bought! Man, it is heavy!

That is so awesome that you found a butcher that carries pork in your area! I love to cook pork in different ways and I have never lived in an area where it was not sold, so you have my sympathies! That is a great business sense, to serve this area as there was a definite need.
I am sure there are some people that do not know why Muslims do not eat pork. So many different diverse cultures in our world, isn't there?
It looks like his prices are fair and you are being well taken care of. Does he only carry pork or does he have other meats as well?
#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers markets and eventually branching out and evolving over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact of what is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.
