A Patrol-Burn Patient! | Random Chamber Talk | Nov 10, 2024 | Free Health Assessment | Live Good

The nurse called me on Saturday evening to inform me about an emergency case. I went to the ward and found a middle-aged man standing under one of the A/Cs, raising his right upper limb to get the cool air. There was redness all over his right upper limb. Blood?

What happened?

He is a car mechanic. He was fixing a car. There was a leakage and his right upper arm was already soaked with patrol. At one point, there was a spark and he caught the fire! He burnt his right upper limb, from mid-arm to fingers. The car he was working on was also on fire! So, it was a fire accident. They were able to extinguish the fire quickly. Then, he was brought to the clinic. Before arriving at the clinic, they put red toothpaste on the burn area making it look like blood everywhere!

He was having severe burning pain in the right upper limb. The thing that was giving him some sort of comfort was the cold; cold air and cold water.
At first, we tried to clean the thick toothpaste with running tap water. But, the water wasn't cold, rather somewhat hot. It was increasing his burning sensation. We brought cold water from the cooler, and his friend bought cold water bottles from the shop, we put ice bags but nothing was helping much. The superficial skin layer was coming off in an attempt to clean the toothpaste! It was a total mess! We had no other option. Eventually, the skin would have to be removed because the large blisters already started developing. So, we cleaned the toothpaste and the burnt skin together!!

In the meantime, we gave a painkiller and an antibiotic injection. But, nothing was helping him much except for the cool air from the A/C. So, he was running towards the A/C again and again. Finally, the affected areas were cleared and we put a mixture of silver sulfadiazine and lidocaine cream. I added some oral medications. When he left, he was still having burning pain in his right upper limb. He will suffer from its consequences for a long time!

I could almost feel this man's pain while reading your words, how terrible, why would they put toothpaste on him? I have never seen red toothpaste, is it common over there? Ours is white.

There are toothpaste of different colors in the market :) I don't know that too. But, It's quite a common practice here to put toothpaste on any burn site. Some toothpaste contains menthol which provides a cooling effect. It could be a reason.

That is good to know, I grow aloe and that is my go-to for burns, but if I am not home I will now know about using toothpaste.
