Checking My Two Bee Hives
Did you know that you don’t need land to beekeep?
Beekeeping has become one of my favorite activities on the homestead, if not my most favorite. Keeping bees is, for the most part, simple. Get a hive, order some bees or capture a hive, place into hive and do occasional health checks on the hive. Bees forage for their food, but it is nice to have plants around the area so they don’t have to travel far. Dandelions are a bees first food out of winter, so don’t poison your dandelions or remove them! Leave them in your yard for food for the bees.
I know someone who lives in a subdivision and keeps bees in their driveway. They have a miniature plant garden of lavender and other bee food nearby.
If you are worried about being stung, don’t be🐝 Bees don’t want to sting you. Once they sting, they die so it isn’t in their best interest. You can start with a calmer breed of bees (I love my Carniolan bees) and use a beekeeping suit whenever you’re around them. To be honest, I never use a suit except when I do treatments and have to be invasive in their hive at the end of the season.
In this video I check on my two hives I got last year to see how they made it through not only a robbing attack just before winter set in but also one of the most burtal winters we have had in a long time.
