Winter Bee Hive Update
Ugh, one of my bee hives may have died!
Winter can be rough on a hive especially with the brutal cold winter we have been having up north. I wrapped up the hives with extra insulation to keep them warm during the winter to help keep them protected from the cold.
Winter is tough. With these unusual fluctuating temperatures (super cold then warm,) moisture becomes a problem and a killer.
I cleaned the entrances to the hives as well and then checked in to hear if any sounds were coming from them.
Heard a strong buzz in one and nothing from the other. Took my stethoscope out and couldn’t hear anything 😦
If you don’t remember, the hives were attacked and robbed by another colony right before winter set in. That already set them on a harsh road ahead but I had hope and still have hope that the hive will come alive as spring sets in.
I’ll keep you all updated and show off some of the honey I collected last year.

Pretty dang cool!
The hives are amazing. It's one of the best places I love hanging out on the homestead.
Quite sad, but at least you have more than one Hive still alive! ;)
How does one dispose of the dead one?
I tried to fee them to my chickens they were not having it lol
I'll have to reach up more on disposing this one if it in fact is all dead
The other hive is doing well and I'm considering starting up a few more! One of the coolest things on the homestead to have.
First of all, that landscape looks amazing!
Second, if I'm not mistaken there has to be a Queen or the Hive will just die out(?). So you either have to pray there is one, or go out and find one. OR, and I just remembered this, you need to get lucky that there are enough female bees to produce a queen by themselves. 🐝
Bees are amazing though. Kudos for what you're trying to do. 👏👏
🍻
Thank you, I love the views out here.
That's correct the hive has to have a queen. The hive was attacked just before winter but it was too cold to open them up and has been. Spring should be coming soon I hope and I'll be able to open the hives and check out the damage.
I wish you luck! You’re doing humanity a favor with this work. 👏👏
Yay!! So glad to be back and catch more of your adventure!
Not great news on the hive though. They are like your babies but nature has a way of bouncing back. Do the bees from the other hive move in? Go you somehow get another queen and rebuild?
I hope it is just sleeping and surprises you when the spring really sets in. These false starts must not be great for critters with a cycle.
My favourite season ,and best for all
