One of the "dirty jobs" on the Gubba Homestead is cleaning out the chicken coop. There was up to 14 hens and one rooster in this coop for the last few months so you can just imagine the mess they have been making!

I currently have wood shavings down as the bedding of their coop. I've researched a lot and found this to be one of the best floorings. My first thought was to use straw but after finding out what a mess it makes and the environment it produces from getting wet and with all that chicken mess I decided on wood shavings. Maintenance in the coop is pretty low. I only have to go in a stir it around about once a week to mix in in the droppings. The other big plus is it makes cleanup pretty easy. I just scoop it all up and put it into a trash can to be transported over to the compost pile for my garden.

This is all part of getting the chickens ready for the cold winter months that are starting to creep. This also is to get my garden beds ready for fall planting. I have big plans for the garden next year and my goal is to produce at least 100 pounds of food from it. The chick coop compost will go a long way in helping fertilize and create a bountiful harvest.

When I read your title I imagined myself cleaning a big cat house, and even more when I saw that you have decided to use shavings, which is the litter I prefer when my cats use the litter box, to see that it will serve for something else is great, because this investment is not only for the chickens, it will serve as fertilizer for plants, I love it.

Looks like a good way to do it! I am hopeful to move my chicken coop during dry season this year and may use rice husks as their flooring. I've heard it's good for Panama's weather!

Yes gubbahomestead.
Birds are a lot of work to own and well worth it.
Think of the good fertilizer for your garden they make!
Your chickens look beautiful :) They make nice pets I have heard.
Have a great day and evening.

Being a city boy, the countryside seems like a different world but sometimes get this longing for it. Maybe cos I know nothing about the reality of it 😅

It may be a dirty job but somebody has to do it. Thanks for sharing. I think.

Isn't it amazing how the cycle of food/waste works? You feed your livestock (and yourself) from your garden. Your livestock produces food (for you) and waste. You feed the waste to your garden. It's a never ending circle. You get to eat and all you produce is the labor (I hope your not contributing waste to your garden) ;p

Actually cleaning the chicken coop is not an easy job, I don't think you can find a clean corner
