DigitalCHURCH & Hive Meetup Aachen
Many churches across Europe have been repurposed in recent decades. Some of the new purposes are thoroughly innovative – for instance, a church in Spain has been turned into a skatepark La Iglesia (literally "Church" in Spanish). Some other conversions might feel a bit offensive – such as when a former church is converted into a bar or even a strip club. If you are interested in buying a church, regardless of your intentions, here's a long list of British religious buildings for sale. I believe you can find similar listings in most European countries.
What happened to St. Elisabeth, an early 20th-century parish church in Aachen, seems quite acceptable – it has become a digital hub. People gather there, likely way more than before, even though the Holy Spirit has been replaced by omnipresent Wi-Fi. And when you witness the Blue Screen of Death, you can still pray for the resurrection of your data. At least, it would be a 100% sincere prayer.
DigitalCHURCH hosted the Hive Meetup in Aachen this weekend. You could hardly find a better place downtown. Hats off to @detlev for organizing the bilingual and multinational event with about 25 Hiveans and off-Hive guests participating. I hope we onboarded one startup (Hive performs better than Polygon at the end of the day!) and the Aachen University Blockchain Club – where else should such a club promote its activities? Its president even gave one of the presentations. How often can you shake hands with Mr. President anyway?
Besides promoting Propolis Wiki, which, by the way, still needs more contributors and rewards the best of them every week, my topic for the event was the future and long-term sustainability of WorldMappin. I am glad the core team is on the same page, and WorldMappin will push the bar, already set high by Pinmapple, even higher. There are loads of work ahead, but we are sure it is worth it – for the sake of Hive and for avid travelers like myself.
And that is the keen message to anyone reading this post. Hive is not a company managed by a C-level board with some hidden stakeholders pulling the strings or anything even remotely similar. Hive is a community of open-minded people with equal accounts, where the only difference is the Hive Power they control. And, perhaps, the good or bad reputation people have gained based on their previous deeds and claims. If you want something to be done, why not step up to the plate? Somebody is always willing to back up any meaningful project, and they are just one comment or a single DM on Discord far from you.
Having venues like digitalCHURCH is a blessing (well, the pope might disagree on this one, but he does not have a profile here yet). And so is having people willing to hold such events. Consider it an invitation to the next HiveBuzz Party – depending on where it will be – or Hive Fest, which I am 100% going to attend. By the way, did you know there was a reimbursement fund for overseas attendees?
What not to miss in case you missed the Meetup?
- Hive helps. A lot! Not only @solarisfuture and @cleanplanet mentioned on the event, there are many other initiatives. I regularly support @hallmann and his projects in Poland.
- Hive loves to meet and greet. Follow the #hivebuzz parties by @tibfox, @ph1102 and their team. Will there be the one in the Balkans?
- Hive is playful - stop by Hive Fest in Split and browse the new Hive Magazine by @quekery and the gang.
- Hive surprises. The outsiders were truly surprised by what our favorit blockchain is capable of.

My goodness, it's awesome to see how these old churches are being used creatively. DigitalCHURCH looks like a great place for tech enthusiasts to meet and share ideas. Perfect level creativity !WEED

Not yet - We'll either meet somewhere in the Balcans (former Yugoslavia, somewhere in Europe for the Americans 😜) or in Split on Hive Fest. Split is Balcans too anyway ;)

Amazing stuff! I really appreciate the amount of time and resources needed to put this together. The venue is awesome and I hope the event itself was too.
This weekend, I will be hosting a few friends in our very first meetup in my city Aba, Nigeria. It may not be as huge as this, but hey! we've got to take that very little first step. Big things sometimes start small.

Gotta be honest and say that I'm more into preserving the old architecture buildings and their look, but when there is no money (or will) for that, finding a new purpose for them is definitely a good option! Especially, if it helps with keeping the original structure of it and this DigitalCHURCH is definitely a great example of that! It looks modern but still tells a history lesson... I like it! Perfect place for a meetup! @detlev found a real gem!
I have checked a couple of posts from the event, but it looks like many people wanted to stay "incognito", as there are not too many faces around... 😃 And I can't wait until September to see some of my friends!! 😃
Hmmm... I'm slowly building that idea... It was a very busy June, and we have to wrap up some important things here in Spain in July... So, if we do it, it could happen in mid-August... In the next week or so, will try to contact a few people and see if there is interest in doing it at all... ;)

Takže cášský meet up se vydařil? Paráda :) I účast nakonec, vidím, velmi slušná. Organizátoři zjevně odvedli kus práce. To byl vlastně tvůj první mezinárodní Hive meet up, takže předpokládám, že sis ho pořádně užil a už se těšíš na další :)

That looks really awesome. I once went to a church that had been turned into a night club. There was a comedian there that we paid some money to see. The content was very church un-friendly!

Speaking of repurposed churches, here is one of my favourite ones in my small town. Www.revival.house is now an upscale restaurant and event venue. I was licky enough to catch Carole Pope (Rough Trade) there this week.
Awesome of you to attend in Achen and represent not only #hive but @propolis-wiki as well. Some day I will join you across the ocean at these events.
We can also cross the ocean the other way ;) I've been to the US, but not to Canada yet :)
And I guess the next Hive Fest would be in Asia, and then it comes back to Americas.
It looks a really impressive venue and great to see it getting some community usage and spreading good Hive vibes around. I am wondering how the accoustics are with the high ceilings and open planning in the main part.
Well, the conference took place in the parish rooms downstairs. I guess the nave has the same accoustics as when it still was a church, so a large event in it would be cool. That would require like 200 people instead of 25 though :)
