A sea of alcohol / Un mar de alcohol
We moved to the city of Bilbao in northern Spain in the Basque Country, to visit the Guggenheim Museum. The work I bring you belongs to El Anatsui, an artist who in 1998 began to make metal sculptures with discarded liquor bottle caps. Alcohol was one of the consumer products that Europeans transported to Africa to exchange for slaves.
Crushing, twisting, pressing and intertwining with wire are the tasks performed by El Anatsui's team of assistants.
This work is called "Growing Sea", although the title "A Sea of Alcohol" also suits it, don't you think?
