Un placer estar de nuevo por esta maravillosa comunidad. En esta oportunidad quiero contarles sobre mi experiencia dictando mi taller de lettering versión: Lettering Party.

It's a pleasure to be back in this wonderful community. This time I want to tell you about my experience teaching my lettering workshop version: Lettering Party.

Como he comentado anteriormente tengo una tienda online de materiales de arte (Poeticabyg), donde desde el año pasado he estado dictando talleres de lettering para niños y adultos. El lettering es el arte de dibujar letras y una de mis pasiones. Como me gusta salirme de la caja, intento que cada taller tenga una temática diferente. Mi idea es que no solo vayas a aprender lettering, sino que obtengas una experiencia diferente.

As I mentioned before I have an online art supplies store (Poeticabyg), where since last year I have been teaching lettering workshops for children and adults. Lettering is the art of drawing letters and one of my passions. As I like to go out of the box, I try to make each workshop have a different theme. My idea is that you don't just go to learn lettering, but that you get a different experience.

En este caso, la Lettering Party es una fiesta de cumpleaños donde aprendes lettering. La idea nació desde mi cumpleaños (11 de abril), que quería celebrar de una forma distinta y hacer un taller me pareció lo mejor. Así que me puse manos a la obra. Estuvimos a casa llena en la primera versión, y muchos esperaban la segunda. Así que les contaré como me fue.

In this case, the Lettering Party is a birthday party where you learn lettering. The idea was born from my birthday (April 11), which I wanted to celebrate in a different way and a workshop seemed the best thing to do. So I got down to work. We had a full house for the first version, and many were waiting for the second one. So I will tell you how it went.

Como en toda fiesta de cumpleaños tuvimos cotillones o sorpresas. En la primera versión los hice en forma de pastel de cumpleaños. Fue un reto hacer las cajas en forma de pastel, pero quedé muy satisfecha con los resultados. Para esta segunda versión no quise hacer lo mismo, así que mi mamá @janeco68 me recordó un juego de jenga versión de las cartas de UNO que tuvimos de chicos. Me lancé con esa idea de un juego de jenga para hacer los cotillones. Cosa de que además de repartir los cotillones, también pudieramos hacer una dinámica rompe hielo. De una vez ahí, incluí otras sorpresas y una rifa extra con materiales de arte (marcadores y stickers).

As in every birthday party we had cotillions or surprises. In the first version I made them in the shape of a birthday cake. It was a challenge to make the boxes in the shape of a cake, but I was very satisfied with the results. For this second version I didn't want to do the same, so my mom @janeco68 reminded me of a jenga game version of UNO cards we had as kids. I jumped on that idea of a jenga game to make the cotillions. So that in addition to handing out the cotillions, we could also make an icebreaker dynamic. Once there, I included other surprises and an extra raffle with art supplies (markers and stickers).

Otro detalle que anexo en mis talleres son sobres con frases positivas. Frases que amorosamente diseño usando técnicas de lettering. Estos sobres contienen las hojas de trabajo que usaremos en las actividades. Me encanta la cara de sorpresa de los participantes cuando voltean el sobre y descubren la frase que le tocó. Muchos me han comentado que la frase que les ha tocado les ha ayudado en su vida.

Another detail that I add in my workshops are envelopes with positive phrases. Phrases that I lovingly design using lettering techniques. These envelopes contain the worksheets that we will use in the activities. I love the look of surprise on the participants' faces when they turn the envelope over and discover the phrase they got. Many have told me that the phrase they got has helped them in their lives.

Empiezo el taller dando términos básicos del lettering y explicando sus tipos. Explicaciones sencillas que pueden aplicar a las palabras que van a dibujar. Esta vez me enfoque en el handlettering, un estilo de lettering que consiste en el dibujo de letras a mano, cualquier tipo de letra. Es un estilo muy libre y que te permite experimentar de forma muy amplia. Admito que es mi estilo favorito.

I start the workshop by giving basic terms of lettering and explaining its types. Simple explanations that you can apply to the words you are going to draw. This time I focus on handlettering, a style of lettering that consists of drawing letters by hand, any type of letter. It is a very free style that allows you to experiment in a very wide way. I admit that it is my favorite style.

Trabajamos con letras sans serif, letras totalmente rectas, con formas 3D. También con letras serif pero con un estilo de serifa entre paréntesis y otro estilo que me encanto que es el groovy o retro. El estilo groovy con un contraste alto me encanta y me parece tan divertido. Así que era perfecto para trabajarlo con niños. No podía faltar el estilo cursiva o script, es uno de los favoritos y el que siempre me comentan que se les hace más difícil de dominar. Nada que con práctica no se logre.

We work with sans serif letters, totally straight letters, with 3D shapes. Also with serif letters but with a serif style in brackets and another style that I love which is the groovy or retro. I love the groovy style with high contrast and I find it so much fun. So it was perfect to work with children. I couldn't miss the cursive or script style, it is one of the favorites and the one they always tell me is the most difficult to master. Nothing that with practice can't be achieved.

Luego de las prácticas, iniciamos con un proyecto final. En la Lettering Party anterior trabajamos una frase positiva: “Soy pequeño pero puedo hacer grandes cosas”. Me pareció la más acertada para trabajar con niños de entre 8 a 13 años. Me pareció importante resaltarles que aunque son niños, son seres importantes y son capaces de lograr lo que se propongan. Esta es una de las razones por las que me gusta el lettering, por todo lo que permite demostrar.

After the internship, we started with a final project. At the previous Lettering Party we worked on a positive phrase: "I am small but I can do great things". I thought it was the most appropriate to work with children between 8 and 13 years old. I thought it was important to emphasize that although they are children, they are important beings and are capable of achieving whatever they set their minds to. This is one of the reasons why I like lettering, for all that it allows them to demonstrate.

En esta ocasión quise ir más allá. El día anterior envíe una tarea con sus papás, debían definirse a sí mismos en 3 o 4 virtudes o cualidades. Partiendo de ahí hicimos una composición con el nombre de cada uno y las cualidades que los definen y representan. Esto representa un reto para ellos. Les ayudo a armar su composición para al final cada uno diseña sus letras, las adapta, elige colores, agrega doodles. Es el momento en el que los niños expresan toda su creatividad, talento e ingenio. Me maravilla todo lo que logran. Les voy a mostrar dos de los trabajos finales que hicieron.

This time I wanted to go further. The day before I sent a task with their parents, they had to define themselves in 3 or 4 virtues or qualities. From there we made a composition with the name of each one and the qualities that define and represent them. This represents a challenge for them. I help them to put together their composition and at the end each one designs their letters, adapts them, chooses colors, adds doodles. This is the moment when the children express all their creativity, talent and ingenuity. I marvel at what they achieve. I am going to show you two of the final works they did.
