HBD Interest Payouts For February 2022

March 2022 has arrived. It is time to look at HBD interest payments for February 2022. It has been a full year since Hive blockchain started paying interest for HBD. In the last year, a lot of effort has been put in by developers, witnesses, and the community to make the HBD peg to USD work and finally have a true algorithmic stable-coin. I believe these efforts have been a success, and HBD has been holding the peg impressively well.

This became especially evident in the last couple of months when crypt market experienced high volatility. HBD managed to stay close to USD, and every time managed to go back to $1 USD. All thanks to efforts by hbdstabilizer, core blockchain change to add ability to convert Hive to HBD, witnesses configuring APR parameter to pay interest, and community showing interest to experiment with earning interest for HBD.

As it is, I think HBD is working great. However, there is always room for improvement. In the future I would prefer to see APR increased as high as 20%, Hive to HBD and HBD to Hive conversions to be near instant rather than waiting 3 days, removing the small fee for conversions. I know there have been discussions of potential risks for such changes. We can never know if we don't at least try. I believe in efficient markets, and that markets tend to fix themselves whenever there are inefficiencies.

HBD works as it was originally intended. There are many use cases for stable-coins like HBD. One of the use cases is ability for crypto enthusiasts park their assets in a stable-coin when taking profits from other crypto assets and waiting for new opportunities. Earning 12% interest while just waiting for the next investment opportunity is a great feature to have for a stable-coin, especially when the underlying fiat keeps losing purchasing power due to inflation.

Below is the total HBD interest payouts and number of accounts that received payments in the last 12 months. Keep in mind these numbers only represent the payments received. There may be accounts that are able to receive HBD interest payments, but haven't claimed/triggered payments yet.

Total HBD Interest Payments & Accounts By Month

MonthYearTotal AmountTotal Accounts
March202110,429 HBD6,415
April202112,208 HBD7,106
May202116,574 HBD7,250
June202138,883 HBD7,167
July20211,696 HBD682
August20215,646 HBD1,062
September20212,570 HBD1,129
October20214,914 HBD1,239
November202110,931 HBD1,482
December202119,004 HBD1,655
January202219,740 HBD1,843
February202214,775 HBD1,654

We can see in February the total payments amount and account numbers dropped a little bit. This can be due to February having only 28 days compared other months. But reason may also be that accounts may have chosen to withdraw due to crypto assets being low in prices and presenting buying opportunities.

Since many accounts have been receiving decent amounts of payments as HBD interest payments, this time I decided to list top 300 accounts, instead of 150 as was done in previous reports. Ideally, I would like to list all interest payment recipients. But post length limit wouldn't allow it.

I think you should add a chart showing the distribution of the rewards. I think the 12% interest gimmick will lead to a situation where HIVE is paying a huge amount of interest to a small number of accounts.

I copied your list to a spreadsheet. It shows that top account received more interest than the bottom 206 in your sample of just 300 accounts.

Imbalances like this are not good for the platform.

First, it is not a gimmick. It is a powerful feature of the Hive blockchain.

Second, only those who put HBD in Savings will receive the interests. Doesn't matter how much is in your savings, everybody gets 12% or whatever the APR is at the time.

Third, to receive payments there must be some actions by the account like a transfer to trigger a claim of the interest payments. So it is possible you wouldn't receive these payments for months, then you make a small transfer and receive the payment for all the months you are entitled to but haven't claimed yet.

I hope this explains that there are no imbalances here. Everybody has the equal opportunity to take advantage of this feature or not. It's matter of individual investment/financial decisions.

I wish you would take a look at financial history.

Debt kills.

I have personally seen debt destroy thousands of individuals and hundreds of companies. The statistics about debt are grim. Look at the massive number of people destroyed by the subprime loans given out at the start of the century.

HBD interest is new. This gap between the 1% and masses is likely to grow with time.

I've seen debt destroy a large of companies that actually sold real products. Debt destroys. The product HIVE sells is the high interest rate on HIVE. So, we have debt on debt.

Personally I see the high interest on HBD as being existential threat to the blockchain. It is stupid to destroy a program simply so you can tout a high interest rate.

I've been researching financial history. Thousands of companies have fallen victim to debt.

The gimmick is that we want to say that HIVE offers an interest rate well above market.

The problem is that the debt is held by just a few accounts. In your list, the top 10 accounts hold just under half of the outstanding debt. This ratio

The debt limit is currently 10% and the interest rate is set to 12% by the witnesses. If the debt increases the witnesses can reduce the rates. Right now, we are actually in a situation where not enough HBD exists, therefore increasing the rates makes sense.

The debt limit is currently 10% and the interest rate is set to 12% by the witnesses.

So, HIVE is trading at $1.00 and the ratio of debt to HIVE is 10%. Wait a second. The price of HIVE is not fixed, while the price of HBD is pegged.

If HIVE dropped to a dime, then the ratio of debt to HIVE would be 100%. The annual interest on the debt would be greater than the market value of HIVE.

This is called bankruptcy.

I understand. HIVE has never in-its-history traded in the teens. So the idea that the price of HIVE dropping into the teens is absurd.

(By "in-its-history" I mean the last two weeks) 'cause, if the tern "in the history" included last year, then, yeah, there was a period when HIVE traded in the teens.

If the debt increases the witnesses can reduce the rates.

You are saying that when a borrowers are caught in debt traps, the borrowers can snap their finger and get a lower interest rates.

That is not what financial history shows. Financial history shows that When people are in debt, they find it harder to borrow money and need to pay a interest rate so that they can borrow more money to pay off interest on their outstanding loans.

we are actually in a situation where not enough HBD exists,

@geekgirl's data shows that the debt is being accumulated by only a few investors.

The fact that hard-bloggin' hiveans are not gobbling up the HBD shows that there is too much HBD on the market.

I still contend that the eagerness of the witnesses to take on debt is one of the greatest existential threat to the platform.

Thanks for the article.

It is nice to see that HIVE developers recognize the death spiral as a real risk.

I disagree with the assessment that 10% is a low debt ratio.

The historic price data shows wild swings in the price of HIVE. When the market value of HIVE halves the ratio of HBD to HIVE doubles.

HBD tends to magnify the dips in the price of HIVE. When demand for HIVE and HBD is week and the price of HBD falls, then people will start converting HBD to HIVE ... worsening the price pressure.

Personally, I think HIVE should only take on debt when the debt is truly benefiting the platform.

@geekgirl 's post was about the distribution of the debt ownership. Her chart is showing that only a few people own most of the debt.

It might be beneficial to cap the amount of interest bearing HBD that an account can hold.

The long term hope is to arrive at a day when people start using HBD as a currency in transactions. The path to this ideal is to create more use cases for HBD and not simply presenting HBD as an investment vehicle.

Hive price was below 15 cents only a year or so ago. It doesn't mean anything. Market always corrects itself.

I have to strongly disagree with your assessment. It seems like we have completely different understanding of this blockchain and its stable-coin HBD.

Yes, HBD has been called debt many times. But it is not. At least not in a way companies or individuals take out loans. Yes, Hive blockchain guarantees $1 USD worth of Hive for every HBD. It is in the code and stakeholder approve the code that is run by consensus. If HBD were to hurt anybody, it would hurt the Hive stakeholders.

Yes, HBD can be converted to Hive. While I don't have data how often the conversion mechanism is used, my guess would be people usually convert HBD to Hive by selling in the internal market. Such action in essence means buying Hive.

It will be easier to understand Hive and HBD as two native coins of Hive blockchain, rather than some kind of debt. In most cases, those who own HBD are also stakeholders and own Hive and HP.

Few accounts or tons of accounts holding HBD doesn't matter at all. Everybody is welcome to hold as many HBD they like. Anybody can do so by converting their USDs to HBD. There is very low risk in losing the investment.

If any of these don't convince you, just take a look at the fact that now Hive can be converted to HBD. You can create billions of HBD, just by buying Hive and converting to HBD. You wouldn't lose a dime and Hive price would go so high, every stakeholder will thank you for creating this massive "debt".

I'm glad I made the list 🙌

I would prefer to see APR increased as high as 20%, Hive to HBD and HBD to Hive conversions to be near instant rather than waiting 3 days

This would definitely give more incentive to keep HBD ❤️ . I already love it, but improvements are always welcome.

12% is not bad at all compared to what banks offer. But compared to some other crypto projects, 12% might a bit low. I think someone mentioned in the previous post that there is a project that pays 18-20%. Don't remember what it was and how it works.

It all depends on how bad they want you to hodl... Some projects offer completely unsustainable amounts just to get buyers :(

A lot of improvement on HBD, I need to improve to make this list next time.

@geekgirl @techslut @badbitch

I swear there's a hit blockchain girlgroup right thurrr!

U3 or You3

Like in the question form... "You free?"

What's my point?

MARKETING BITCHES!! (i mean ladies)

See and HEAR this:

"I wanna see (you) it PUMPING!"
(man voice repeats: PUMP IT PUMP IT...)

Oh man the marketing potential in crypto with that track is insane. Almost prophetic they were: TOKYO GHETTO PUSSY!

.....

So really imo, you (techgirl) saying that just sitting around watching percentages grow will draw people to HBD is nuts. Just like LEO?
Tunnel vision much...

HIVE needs HBD to be utilized by a broader audience. A network only becomes sustainable once what they offer fulfills the interactive needs of that greater audience. Merchants/markets for example were always that vision so if HBD is now stable then why no progress?

This thing here (from steemit to Hive) is so damn stale and static.

Many boast "WE HAVE CUTTING EDGE!" while they sit there with two rocks smashing off tiny flints celebrated as "Wow web3 amazing" but no one outside of here agrees.

I am the 150th on this list.

$9.881 USD interest for the February of 2022 (2022.02.27).

We can see in February the total payments amount and account numbers dropped a little bit. This can be due to February having only 28 days compared other months.

This could be. I am constantly trying to increase the amount of HBD I have in savings, and I expected at least $10 HBD interest for this month. Maybe that could have been, if I would not have triggered the interest payment by a transfer to savings.

By the way, the top 10 in this list receive more HBD interest than my monthly pension-like income for my multiple disabilities, which is approximately only $250 USD per month.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

Mmmh that's odd. I should be part of this list, but I am not. Is there a bug in your script?

Cheers!

EDIT: Interests are paid 30 days after the last interest payment, which is why I didn't get them yet. I can assume than many people are in the same situation as me (and haven't received their interests yet), so that it may be good to have your monthly post written on the 2nd or the 3rd every month. What do you think?

0

avatar

It looks like your last payment was on January 31.

Even if I made the post later, I would still have to limit the query to only include the payments of the specific month, so that these payments aren't counted twice. That could introduce inaccurate data.

Since February is the only month with less than 30 days, I think this method works ok for the rest of the year. :)

0

0.000
avatar

Precisely. I will still need to wait for 4-5 hours before getting mine. I (and probably all others in the same situation, as I can imagine we are many) will then re-appear in your script in a month, won't I?

Since February is the only month with less than 30 days, I think this method works ok for the rest of the year.

Yes, I agree.

If I have well understood what your script does, it scans the interest payments done for all the days of the current month. It is thus well defined, and a bunch of users will end up being out of the list once in a while due to the 30-day period.

"Thanks" to February I will indeed get my next payment this afternoon, i.e. in the (CET) afternoon of March 2nd. Fast forward 30 days later and we will be in the middle of April 1st, and so on. The payment date will just move along the year, slowly and slowly. There may even be months where two payments occur and the timeline aligns properly with 30-days and 31-days months.

I guess this is just a feature and we need to live with it ;)

12% is pretty good! It doesn't really compare to defi projects like CUB, but at the same time it is much more secure than defi projects, so given that I think it's still a great rate. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing it increase again.

A few of the witnesses are voting for more. 15 and 20. I've watched that slowly creep up from only one witness to a few. Perhaps we will get a bump soon.

After Polycub launches, I plan to take at least a little profit from that and put it in the HBD saving account. While it is extremely tempting to keep everything in high risk projects, the safety provided by HBD is hard to ignore.

Yes, there are more opportunities with higher returns but there are also higher risks involved. I personally prefer investing in coins like hive or bitcoin to see them go up 3x or 4x, instead of relying on 12%.

This has been such a great development. A lot less Hive hits the market because people used to swap to Hive and sell, now they just put it in savings.

I really underestimated what a great change this was!

This might seem a stupid question, but does this mean when you put your hive 'into savings' which I only just tried a few weeks ago (honestly hadn't really paid attention to it and then read that you get an interest rate? which impressed me as I don't get that in my Real USD bank account haha) So I transferred a small bit into my savings, so is that what this is about? You get that interest back in HBD ? or Hive? Sorry to be so dim on all this, but just really curious :) @geekgirl

You need to transfer HBD to savings to be eligible for the interest payments. Not Hive.
