Como todos sabemos, y los que no lo saben, deberían saberlo, la naturaleza es la mayor farmacia que existe, en ella están las curas para todos los males que puedan afectar a cualquiera de los seres vivos que estamos en este planeta, es mas, me atrevería a decir que es posible que esta gran farmacia terrícola incluso esté siendo usada por civilizaciones de otros planetas y galaxias, ¿Por qué no?

El fruto de la caoba tiene forma ovoide y mide entre 10 a 18 cms y su color cambia de verde a marrón grisáceo a medida que va madurando, cuando esto ocurre, el fruto se abre y poco a poco va soltando las semillas que están en su interior. Las semillas están dentro de unos envoltorios muy ligeros en forma de ala de color naranja-rojizo, gracias a la forma aerodinámica y la ligereza de este envoltorio, la semilla de la caoba puede volar y dispersarse con la ayuda del viento.

The mahogany fruit is ovoid in shape and measures between 10 to 18 cm and its color changes from green to grayish brown as it matures. When this happens, the fruit opens and little by little releases the seeds that are inside. The seeds are inside very light wing-shaped envelopes of orange-reddish color. Thanks to the aerodynamic shape and lightness of this envelope, the mahogany seed can fly and disperse with the help of the wind.

A veces el fruto cae al suelo antes de abrirse, igual seguirá madurando y cuando llegue el momento se abrirá para cumplir con su misión, repartir nuevas semillas. La cáscara es bastante resistente. Los frutos de la caoba salen entre los meses de noviembre a marzo. En estas fotos pueden apreciar frutos en diferentes etapas, cerrado, abierto con parte de su cáscara, semi abierto con todas sus semillas y su cáscara, e incluso el fruto ya desnudo sin semillas.

En el parque al cual voy todos los domingos hay bastantes árboles de caoba, entre enero y marzo se pueden ver muchísimas de estas alas portadoras de semilla dispersas por casi todas las áreas del parque. Hace dos semanas, después de terminar nuestra clase de Tai chi el profesor me dijo que esas semillas son comestibles y que son medicinales, de hecho, revisamos por internet y pude confirmar que eso es cierto, así que saqué una bolsa y recogí bastantes para llevar a mi casa y estudiarlas con más calma.

In the park where I go every Sunday there are quite a few mahogany trees, between January and March you can see many of these seed-bearing wings scattered throughout almost all areas of the park. Two weeks ago, after finishing our Tai Chi class, the teacher told me that these seeds are edible and that they are medicinal. In fact, we checked the internet and I was able to confirm that this is true, so I took out a bag and collected quite a few to take home and study them more calmly.

Ya en mi casa, investigué un poquito más respecto a estas semillas y me senté para abrirlas. Cada alita tiene una semilla en el extremo más grueso, el resto es una muy delgada capa que parece como de papel, perfecto para sostenerese en el aire durante un largo rato y llevar lo más lejos posible la semilla que dará vida a un nuevo árbol de caoba. En mi ciudad y en Venezuela hay muchos árboles de caoba, sobretodo en los parques y otras zonas de recreación.

Once at home, I did a little more research regarding these seeds and sat down to open them. Each wing has a seed at the thickest end, the rest is a very thin layer that looks like paper, perfect for holding in the air for a long time and carrying the seed that will give life to a new mahogany tree, as far as possible. In my city and in Venezuela there are many mahogany trees, especially in parks and other recreation areas.

Después de sacar todas las semillas tenía la curiosidad de probarlas, el profesor ya me había dicho que eran amargas así que probé un pedacito nada más 😬, creo que jamás había comido algo tan amargo 🥴😩😵🤣. Menos mal que no me comí toda la semilla jajaja, la sensación de amargura en la boca era muy intensa, tuve que tomar agua y comer un poquito de azúcar para ver si así se me quitaba pero no fue así 😬🥴😂😂, busqué un chicle y después de masticarlo un buen rato se me quitó la sensación de amargor.

Las semillas las guardé en un frasco de vidrio y creo que investigaré lo referente a las propiedades emolientes que contienen, eso me llama mucho la atención 😃 / I kept the seeds in a glass jar and I think I will investigate the emollient properties they contain, that catches my attention 😃

El uso más frecuente de estas semillas es contra la hipertensión y el exceso de azúcar en la sangre, de hecho, un amigo de mi profesor de Tai chi se curó de la hipertensión comiendo una semilla de caoba al día, este remedio se lo indicó un curandero indígena y quedó sorprendido con los resultados. Estuve revisando en internet, y leí que en muchos países de Suramérica las semillas de caoba son muy solicitadas para tratar y controlar la diabetes, así que los que tengan cerca un árbol de caoba, pueden probarlo y ver los beneficios por sí mismos.
