Buitres, yo los observo, ellos me miran / Vultures, I watch them, they watch me

Saludos hivers. Venezuela es un país con una gran variedad de aves, es el séptimo país con mayor diversidad de aves en todo el mundo, las hay de todos los tamaños, colores y hábitats. Muchas de estas especies viven sólo en las selvas, los llanos, la costa, o las montañas, alejadas de los humanos, otras viven en estos mismos espacios pero donde hay presencia de gente y también hay un grupo bastante numeroso de ellas que viven en áreas pobladas por personas.

Greetings hivers. Venezuela is a country with a great variety of birds, it's the seventh country with the greatest diversity of birds in the world, there are them of all sizes, colors and habitats. Many of these species live only in the jungles, the plains, the coast, or the mountains, far from humans, others live in these same spaces but where there is the presence of people and there is also a fairly large group of them that live in areas populated by people.

Por lo general, cuando hablamos de las aves que surcan con sus coloridas alas los cielos de este hermoso país llamado Venezuela, nos viene la imagen de alguna de las cuatro especies de guacamayas que habitan aquí, principalmente porque somos un país tropical y todo lo colorido nos representa, ya sean aves, frutas, flores o paisajes. Sin embargo, hoy no les hablaré de las guacamayas sino de otra ave, una muy diferente a ellas.

Generally, when we talk about the birds that fly through the skies of this beautiful country called Venezuela, the image that comes to our minds is of one of the four species of macaws that live here, mainly because we are a tropical country and everything colorful represents us, be it birds, fruits, flowers or landscapes. However, today I won't talk to you about macaws but about another bird, one very different from them.

Esta ave no tiene alas cubiertas de llamativos colores, un canto melódico, ni un aspecto que la mayoría considere hermoso pero también merece ser tomada en cuenta porque tiene cualidades que la hacen única y también muy bella y útil para el ecosistema. Esa ave es el buitre negro o zamuro como le decimos en Venezuela.

This bird doesn't have wings covered in striking colors, a melodic song, or an appearance that most consider beautiful, but it also deserves to be taken into account because it has qualities that make it unique and also very beautiful and useful for the ecosystem. That bird is the black vulture or zamuro as we call it in Venezuela.

Los zamuros viven en casi todas las ciudades de Venezuela, muchos de ellos prefieren los lugares alejados de la civilización mientras que otros han aprendido a convivir con la gente aunque desde las grandes alturas. A la mayoría de las personas no les gustan porque les parecen feos, intimidantes y porque se alimentan de desperdicios y cadáveres, pero yo siento un gran aprecio y fascinación por ellos.

Vultures live in almost all the cities of Venezuela, many of them prefer places far from civilization while others have learned to live with people although from great heights. Most people don't like them because they seem ugly and intimidating and because they feed on waste and corpses but I have a great appreciation and fascination for them.

Los zamuros son muy tímidos y es raro que se acerquen a la gente, vuelan por toda la ciudad monitoreando con su extraordinaria vista y olfato en busca de algún cadáver que deba ser limpiado, porque ciertamente ese es su trabajo, mantener todo limpio en la naturaleza, algo esencial para el ecosistema.

Vultures are very shy and it's rare that they approach people. They fly throughout the city monitoring with their extraordinary sight and smell in search of garbage or a corpse that needs to be cleaned, because that is certainly their job, to keep everything clean in nature, something essential for the ecosystem.

La mayoría de los zamuros que viven en las ciudades aterrizan en los centros de recolección de la basura para alimentarse, de hecho, si uno pasa cerca de estos centros, se les puede ver en grandes grupos volando en círculos sobre estos lugares.

Most vultures that live in cities land at garbage collection centers to feed, in fact, if one passes near these centers, they can be seen in large groups flying in circles over these places.

Supongo que los que viven en mi ciudad también acuden al centro de recolección de la basura para alimentarse, probablemente durante las horas que no los veo volando por ahí o descansando en sus lugares favoritos, las cimas de los edificios y de las antenas.

I suppose that those who live in my city also go to the garbage collection center to feed themselves, and it's probably during the hours that I don't see them flying around or resting in their favorite places, the tops of buildings and antennas.

A este otro amigo lo ví una mañana en el techo del edificio desde mi balcón / I saw this other friend one morning on the roof of the building from my balcony

Mientras le hacía estas fotos me observaba de una manera muy curiosa y graciosa, como tratando de entender qué rayos estaba haciendo yo con esa cosa rectangular en las manos 🤭🤣 / While I was taking these photos he looked at me in a very curious and funny way, as if trying to understand what the hell I was doing with that rectangular thing in my hands 🤭🤣

Cuando llueve les gusta extender sus inmensas alas para que se mojen bien y luego proceden a limpiarlas cuidadosamente con sus picos. Cuando hay mucho sol y hace calor también suelen extenderlas para refrescarse.

When it rains they like to spread their immense wings so that they get well wet and then they proceed to carefully clean them with their beaks. When there is a lot of sun and heat, they also tend to spread them out to cool off.

Si hubiese tenido un lente de zoom esta foto me hubiese quedado espectacular ☹️, un zamuro con sus enormes alas extendidas descansando sobre la terraza de mi edificio. En esta ocasión yo estaba ubicada en un lugar más alto que el zamuro porque fui a ver algo desde la escalera del cuarto de máquinas del ascensor y cuando volteé hacia el otro lado vi al ave allí parada 😻. El zamuro está sobre el muro. No quise acercar más la foto para que no se pixelara 😕 / If I had had a zoom lens, this photo would have looked spectacular ☹️, a vulture with its enormous wings spread resting on the terrace of my building. On this occasion I was located in a higher place than the vulture because I went to see something from the stairs of the elevator's machine room and when I turned to the other side I saw the bird standing there 😻. The vulture is on the wall. I didn't want to bring the photo closer so it wouldn't get pixelated 😕


Una de las cosas que más me gusta de los zamuros es su vuelo, la gran envergadura de sus alas les permite alcanzar alturas increíbles y planear de una manera muy elegante, es agradable observarlos e imaginar lo increíble que debe ser poder volar como ellos y ver la ciudad y el mundo desde esa perspectiva.

One of the things I like most about vultures is their flight, the great span of their wings allows them to reach incredible heights and glide in a very elegant way, it's pleasant to observe them and imagine how incredible it must be to be able to fly like them and see the city and the world from that perspective.

Mis encuentros más cercanos con los zamuros ocurren cuando veo alguno parado en el techo o la terraza de mi edificio y los no tan cercanos, cuando los miro descansando sobre los edificios más altos de la ciudad o cuando están volando majestuosamente solos o en familia, incluso los he visto jugueteando alegremente en pleno vuelo y se ve que se lo estaban pasando de lo mejor jejeje.

My closest encounters with vultures occur when I see one standing on the roof or terrace of my building and the not so close ones when I see them resting on the tallest buildings in the city or when they are flying majestically alone or as a family, even I've seen them playing happily in mid-flight and it looks like they were having the best time hehehe.

Debe ser muy interesante tener un lente de zoom para poder ver más de cerca tanto su imponente anatomía como algunas de sus costumbres. He visto como los padres vuelan junto a sus pichones y les van enseñando a dar giros y a alcanzar grandes alturas y luego bajar, un día me entretuve viendo como dos zamuros volaban alrededor de su pichón y jugueteaban con él en el aire como tratando de darle ánimo y valor para que hiciera las mismas piruetas que ellos hacían 🤭 jajaja. Cuando los observas a diario te das cuenta que son unas aves muy tiernas ☺️.

It must be very interesting to have a zoom lens to be able to take a closer look at both its imposing anatomy and some of its habits. I have seen how the parents fly with their chicks and teach them to make turns and reach great heights and then come down. One day I was entertained watching how two vultures flew around their chick and played with him in the air as if trying to cheer him up and courage to do the same pirouettes as them 🤭 hahaha. When you observe them daily you realize that they are very tender birds ☺️.
