Hate it but do it

avatar

Hate is a strong word and maybe it's not quite the right word to use in this case so let me think of a better, nicer, way to put it...I really fucken don't fucken like fucken sand at all. There, that's more appropriate.

That's right, sand.

It gets everywhere and is so bloody annoying. Even just writing about it now makes me feel like I've got sand in some crack or crevice of my body like in my ears or something). I mean, who came up with the idea of sand anyway? I imagine some asshole sitting around thinking, hmm, what is the most annoying fucken thing I can think of to invent...oh yeah, fucken sand, and then they created it. What the fuck.

Ok, so sand isn't my favourite thing which is probably pretty clear.

Not only don't I like the feel of it I hate that stuff getting in my stuff like my vehicle, my equipment and other such places...cracks and crevices. But...and here's the weird thing, I spend and have spent a lot of my time on and in sand. Yeah, who would have thought it.

The problem is that a lot of the places I've operated or needed to go are sandy places. The desert, wilderness and outback places, the beach...sand everywhere! It makes me grimace, (and not in a good way), but because I've had to go to such places I've had to deal with my hate really fucken strong dislike for sand. Basically, I've had to harden the fuck up and get shit done.

20210503_125321~2 (1).jpg

I've done a lot of off-roading on sand because to get to some of the best places it's necessary to drive on beaches, or through deserts, to get there and one of the coolest places is Fraser island. They call it some other politically correct indigenous name now but I refuse to call it that because I grew up knowing it as Fraser Island and the language of this land is English. (That's a political statement there folks.)

"Fraser", as it's colloquially known, is off the East Coast of Australia and is the world's largest sand island of about 120 kilometres in length.

There's something like 250 kilometres of bloody amazing beaches (with fucken sand on them) and is dotted with really cool lakes and creeks, forested areas and off-road tracks to explore. The fresh water bubbles up from underground rivers which originate back on the mainland and travel under the sea to get Fraser, and due to the filtration process along the way it's clear and pretty tasty. Yep, I'm one of those people who has to taste the water in a creek, lake, river or waterfall. There's some amazing fishing spots and really awesome camping spots...and the only way to move around it is by four wheel drive. This means that not many do and that's what I like about it. It's not wise to swim in the ocean there though. Sharks.

Using beaches as roads can be problematic if one has no clue or the vehicle isn't up to the task and getting bogged means (probably) losing the vehicle; they lose about one a week every year as the tide comes in and takes it because people have gotten themselves very bogged or don't have the skills and equipment to get unbogged. Dumbasses.

Driving on sand (for the getting bogged reason) can be a little daunting and is not something I really like to do, and not just because I really fucken don't like sand. It means a long time spend cleaning the underside of the vehicle once off the sand (sand on beaches is salty and salt rusts vehicles quickly) and getting sand in the interior of my four wheel drives sends me quite bonkers as that shit is so hard to get out. Still, I hate it (sand), yep, I really do hate it, but I do it because some of the most amazing and pristine natural places are accessed by beaches and sand roads.

This makes me think of my truck and how caked it was with dirt and sand underneath when I bought it. I think they used it in the oil fields up in Canada and it was filthy. I've washed it so many times since I bought it and there is probably some of that original dirt still stuck in places. We have some sandy areas where I live, but most people are more concerned about driving in the snow and ice here.

Yep, I've had a vehicle or two that carried a little part of planet earth wherever it went, meaning it has dirt/sand from wherever I'd been. It goes with the territory I suppose.

I've done a little bit of snow and ice driving, not too much, but understand why people may not necessarily like it.

It usually takes everyone a little bit to remember how to drive on it each year. Then there are those who just always struggle...

Red dirt or dust is not much better, maybe even worse, I bought my prado like 7 years ago from a government auction place. It looked pretty good, well cleaned and detailed, I saw in the service manual it was base in Emerald, country Queensland, I should have known there would be red dust and marks in most of hard to seen places. I gave up trying to get it all out.

Yep, that red dust is impossible to get out of a vehicle completely. I'm not surprised it was still in there or that it got in there in the first place. I've been to Emerald, Q. a few times and there's red dust everywhere.

I saw the title and the image and instantly knew it was a sand issue lol. Political correctness is bullshit, fuck em.

That place sounds beautiful, I love getting to places that are harder to come by and offer plenty of enjoyment. It keeps the snowflakes from it most of the time, although it is funny to see some people with their cars getting stuck. I’ve seen that a few times lol

Ah yes, news of my near-legendary hatred of sand has spread far and wide it seems.

Fraser Island is totally legit, somewhat daunting, but legit! There's so many cool places there and there's nothing quite like the peace and quiet one finds in places like this but...fucken sand dude, that shit is everywhere.

As for getting bogged...yep, it's often amusing (unless it's me being bogged) especially when it's people who are places they shouldn't be without the necessary skills and equipment. Idiots.

Sand in your shoes is not fun I admit, but sand all over and being dragged into wherever you are staying when you are on vacation is just part of the experience.

...and Sand Castles ! I adore handmade sand castles and those little sand trees you can make with soppy wet sand as it dribbles through your fingers....

I have wondered before how fast it would become annoying if I lived on the coast though.

I guess if it weren't for everywhere sand issues, it would be too perfect at the shore and we just simply couldn't have that, now could we???

  • Sand in shoes: Hate
  • Sand castles: Like (but from a distance)
  • Sand on fingers: Hate
  • The beach without sand: Like

I deal with my hate of sand (usually) but it grinds my gears to be completely honest. So...Sand: Hate.

I thought this was about driving on the right side of the road vs left side. My parents came up to visit from Arizona. We took them to the beach to see the sea. They turned back as soon as they saw sand. They said they have seen enough sand for one life time.

It seems your parents have the right idea about sand and know exactly how to deal with it! The sea/beach without sand is glorious...spent some time on the pebble beaches of Nice, France and loved it, but the deach with sand...should be banned!

Hi Galen, I loved that political decoration so not "correct". I have a couple of friends with whom I occasionally get together in front of a few beers, and I think it's just to say politically incorrect things without bothering anyone.

About beach idiots, the example is applicable to all aspects of life.

Yeah, that whole politically correct thing goes a few steps too far in my opinion. People ar so fragile and sensitive these days, entitled.

Totally agree Galen. This way my Thursday starts, it's raining and there's a full moon, looks like a good day ahead. Greetings

Raining? It's warm here, almost 30 Celsius and it's been raining a little...bloody humidity. I hate that too! 😁

Lolz loving your hate what a fuck! Hahaha, beaches and desert are full of sands and you had to go there to get some pretty things done. Well, we can do without sand because we step on it everyday. Personally I hate sands too. I don't like stepping on them in my room.

To me, the worst of sandy places is being there when it is windy. There is no way to avoid getting it everywhere. But I admit the beauty of sandy nature is usually breathtaking, especially if you are there alone with no other humans around.

Yep, you've taken it to a whole other level; getting whipped by sand flung by the wind is terrible. I also agree about the beauty of it, the beach and all...but that doesn't mean I have to like sand. Lol.

I was in Valencia before the winter of 2019.
Since it was sunny, I went to the beach, took off my thin jacket and lay down on top of it on the fine sand. a light wind was blowing, but the sand on that beach was so fine that even that light wind blew it on me and my clothes.
When I opened my eyes, after 5 minutes, I was like buried in sand. sand on the wardrobe, sand on the face, sand in the hair, sand in the mouth. if I was talking, he would have filled my mouth. And if I was only in my underpants, he would have gone in there too. Sand and the wind, double evil.

I hate going to the hospitals/visiting doctors. But sometimes I have to do it. Just because of my disability I normally have to go to a day hospital for a month every year. The best thing about that is that it is day hospital so I still return home and normally have time to write posts on hive. The bad thing is that I still lose about half a day. I also have to go to the doctor from time to time due to high blood pressure. Good thing that I only change glasses very rarely. The last time when I went to check my eyes doctor put some fucken shit in my eyes and after that I was barely able to see especialy against the sun. So I barely managed to get into bus and get home. That was fun...not.

Could you imagine if there was fucken sand in hospitals? My worst nightmare! Lol.

It's a pity you have to go to the hospital now and then, I do too actually, but we have to do stuff like that sometimes, stuff we don't enjoy. It's just a good thing there's no bloody sand in there!

I am also not very fond going to the graveyards. I am not religious and don't believe in things like a soul or after life so I see the whole expensive funerals and taking care of graves thing as a waste. After I will I die I would like to be given to the wild animals as food. I believe Diogenes also had the same wish. I just fear that animals would get accustomed to human meat and would be more aggressive afterwards...

That's a good plan, or they could throw you in the vegetable garden so that as you decompose you could fertilise the ground. A perfect use for a dead body.

I think the hatred of sand... it's general, it gets everywhere, walking in it in summer burns too much, it gets on your clothes, the things you carry, your backpack, even on your food when it flies and sticks to your skin.

This year to save water they took away the showers on the beaches... I hate sand.

Many things have changed to political correctness, you can no longer say things as they are, everything is criticised... they go to the extreme.

Here after two days of soft rain, beautiful by the way, it was much needed, the sun came out and it's a beautiful day of 20 degrees, a beautiful autumn!

Hugs Galen!

Took away the showers at the beaches to save water.

And people say the human race are on the right track? That we have save water clearly indicates the human race is not on track at all.

They removed it there but squander it elsewhere.... a contradictory whole, the human being is contradictory. No, we are not on the right track at all.

Sand is definitely a four letter word around here too! I can't seem to get away from it what with living on a giant sand bar and all. It gets tracked everywhere and you have to be diligent in sweeping it up. It's such a pain in the ass and I join you in your hatred lol

Ah, yes, sand and cars (that aren't beasts with big crampon wheels and 4x4 drive) don't go together.
Once, in Greece, I started to park my car in an improvised parking lot that was sandy and after 5 minutes of trying to get out of the holes that my wheels had deepened, I had to call other drivers for help...
Fuck it, I didn't have a shovel and some thicker longer boards in the car, I headed to the beach.

Also in Greece, on a sand bar near the town of Posidi, which extends about 1 km into the sea, I witnessed several times when inexperienced drivers got stuck in the middle of the bar and then had to pay for towing.
Taught by the experience of getting stuck in a parking lot, I only drive on hard surfaces, I don't go in the sand.

Driving in sand takes preparation, equipment and some skills and without them one is likely to get bogged. Sand is pretty unforgiving like that, as you found out. Lol.

I just read a few of the more colorful high spots of this post to my Pooky out loud in a butchered aussie accent.

I can only imagine what you sound like. Never heard your voice.

She only had one thing to say.

"Welcome to my world..."

We live in a giant sand box called Florida. We have learned to embrace the crevice and crack thing. NOT.!!

I don’t like sand much myself. Many moons back I had a Nissan Xterra 4WD. It served me well and it was my field vehicle during my student days. I remember doing a field season deep into the needles district in Canyonlands National Park. Sand there was treacherous with no help around and I did not have a winch. Even with it may not helped much as there was little to tie your winch to!

I remember getting up and down the Elephant hill a few times for supplies. You would have loved it!

https://www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/needlesroads.htm

Another example, same place, you have to back in and turn in a few places

Getting bogged in sand isn't fun at all really, not just for being bogged. But also from the sand aspect. Lol.

Elephant Hill looks like some fun though, not so good for the vehicle maybe. 😬
